The Author – ethnologist and anthropologist of culture – defends the thesis that rural landscape is an important component of cultural heritage. Virtual “cyberspaces” as - sume the role of an alternative life environment. Physical space loses the basis for explaining the world and for shaping human experience. The degraded rural cultural landscape is the proof of erroneous conceptions and rural space gathers the effects of a deficit of sensibility to “long continuance”. In opposition to postmodernist assessments the Author objects to the attempts at destabilising culture. Culture is significant. The protection of rural landscape as a particularly sensitive and valuable quality has a sense. In the conclusion of her article the Author suggests that a more thorough humanistic reflection is needed to make it possible to optimally implement the recommendations of the European Landscape Convention.
Most of the little information available on the foraging ecology of the threatened Geoffroy's bat Myotis emarginatus refers to areas outside the Mediterranean Basin. In this study, we analysed habitat selection by this species in a typical Mediterranean landscape. We radio-tracked a breeding colony (adults and juveniles) in the Iberian Peninsula and analysed habitat selection patterns. Although we confirmed the species' preference for forest, olive groves also appeared an important foraging habitat for both adults and juveniles. Juveniles proved to be less mobile than adults, moving on average 1.6 km less than adults in displacements to foraging sites and preferred more accessible habitats. We highlight here the importance of traditionally managed olive groves as foraging sites for this threatened bat. The ripping-up of ancient olive groves and their replacement by intensively managed cropland, urban areas or shrubland represents a significant threat for this vulnerable species in Mediterranean landscapes.
Willingness to pay for the removal of the billboards standing free along the roads has been investigated by using the contingent valuation method. The results of a very limited investigation carried out among the travellers on a thirty kilometre long stretch of the E77 road between Grójec and Janki near Warsaw indicate a rather significant social sensitivity to this sort of pollution of the landscape. If the willingness to pay was attached to one advertisement placed outside the fenced private property along the road, its removal should be valued at 11.32 PLN/household. Total Polish willingness to pay for removal of the standing advertisements has been roughly estimated at 8302.5 million PLN. The sensitivity to this type of landscape pollution was growing with the education and decreasing with the age and the wealth of the person interviewed, except for the highest income group. Women were more sensitive than men.
The nesting preferences including both habitat and nest site characteristics of Syrian Woodpeckers in the agricultural landscape were assessed based on 69 nest sites described. Orchards were the preferred tree stand of the woodpecker, where 58% of its nests were located. The average diameter of tree in which the woodpeckers nested was much higher than the average trees available in territories (47.4 cm and 32.5 cm respectively). The condition of the nest trees was worse than the average trees present in the territories of the birds. Amongst Syrian Woodpecker nesting habitats, only orchards had a worse state of health compared to trees growing in groups, rows or forests. Apple trees Malus domestica with 43.5% of nest sites were also in worse health condition compared to willows Salix spp. (20.3% of nest sites), poplars Populus spp. and walnut trees Juglans regia. The average height of trees with nest holes was 11.3 m and the average height of nest hole placement was 4.2 m. The Syrian Woodpecker is an ecologically flexible species, but it requires trees with larger diameter trunks that are in poorer health as nest trees, such as, for example, apple trees or soft wood trees such as willows. The protection of non-forest tree stands dominated by these species and orchards, which are preferred by this bird, may be important to maintain the Syrian Woodpecker in the agricultural landscape.
This thesis presents the research results on fruit tree alleys located in the area of Stare Czarnowo commune and their influence on the regional landscape diversity. Fruit tree alleys serve as a perfect landscape arranging component which orders the space and performs many natural functions. After the II World War trees were sparsely planted along the road sides and for over 60 years alleys they created have been thoughtlessly devastated. Few of them remained until today, mainly in the West Pomeranian district. In the territory of Stare Czarnowo there were 8 fruit alleys of a different habitat to select and take stock of. Among them: woodlots, roadside shrubs and the avenue created in the area of Dendrological Garden in Glinna. Specimen considered for the research had to be at least 30 cm in the trunk circumference. Among 374 of stock taken plants 4 were identified as fruit trees. There were 125 specimen of the size qualifying them to be regarded as the nature monuments. Fruit trees alleys have a huge impact on diversity of natural habitat. Due to its historical grounds they should be more often and widely used in shaping the rural landscape.
Non-forest woody vegetation (scattered greenery) is currently a common feature of the rural European landscape and provides important ecosystem services. This study presents the statistically based classification of non-forest woody vegetation at the local level according to its structural characteristics mapped in the field. Using hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis, four groups (clusters) of non-forest woody vegetation were detected. Relation of groups of non-forest woody vegetation to altitude, slope gradient and distance from settlements was found, although differences in these factors between groups are small. Moreover, differences in spatial structure in terms of landscape ecology among groups of non-forest woody vegetation were examined and considerable differences among groups were recognized when comparing basic landscape metrics. Presented classification covers unique local or sub-regional groups of non-forest woody vegetation, but it is not sufficient for the national level. For this purpose, it is advocate advised that additional data be collected and official evidence of existing non-forest woody vegetation be generated.
