Soiling of the potato tubers changes their shapes and causes that the surface properties are, to a certain degree, similar to clods of soil. The above affects operation of separators. The purpose of the studies was to determine the influence of soiling of the potato tubers on the duration of the process of their separation by the separators of the combines: Z 644 and E 667/4, and on the position of the impact point of the potato tuber from the conveyor of the separator which affects uniformity of loading of sorting table. There have been constructed two laboratory stands adapted to filming which designs were based on the separators Z 644 and E 667/4. Films were taken using the Pentaflex AK 16 motion picture camera with speeds of 32 and 96 frames per socond which correspond to exposure times of 1/64 and 1/180 second, respectively. The negative films NP-55 of the speed 20 DIN have been used. The filmed object have been illuminated with four LF halogen lamps, 1000 W each. Operation time and point of the fall of tubers from the conveyor were read on the S-521 film cutting table which had been adapted for single frame analysis. The materials used for analysis were: a) tubers soiled in a natural way, b) cleaned tubers. The increase in separation time had been stated for the soiled tubers. For example, the average increase in separation time of the soiled tubers (when compared with the clean ones) was 26% in the case of Alka potatoes on the inclined separator of the Z 644 combine, and 12% in the case of Aba potatoes on the inclined separator of the E 677/4 combine. The largest amount of tubers (in per cent) falls on the 6th and 7th decimetre in the case of clean potatoes, and on 7th and 8th decimetre in the case of soiled ones. That deteriorates the conditons of uniform loading ot sorting table.

The studies conducted at WSI Berlin-Wartenberg have shown that mathematical modelling of individual phases of flight of separated components of the mixture on cascades of complex potato harvesters is impossible. Photographic and cinematographis techniques are the appropriate means of determining flight coordinates. The method of chronophotography used in the experiment has the advantage of representing the analyzed sequence of photographs on a single image produced under uniform conditions. This greatly simplifies the analysis and increases the amount of received information. Furthermore, equipment and material expenditures are relatively small.

Czyszczalnia MPO-50 do wstępnej obróbki ziarna produkowana seryjnie przez fabrykę PO „Woroneżsielmasz” ma szereg wad: mała wydajność, mały efekt czyszczenia zboża, szczególnie przy jego podwyższonej wilgotności i znacznym zanieczyszczeniu. W celu udoskonalenia konstrukcji tej maszyny zaprojektowano i wykonano szereg zmian umożliwiających optymalizację frakcjonowania zanieczyszczeń: dokładność wydzielania zanieczyszczeń, zawartość zanieczyszczeń w części frakcji paszowej, straty pełnowartościowego ziarna, straty drobnego i uszkodzonego ziarna, masa przeniesionego pełnowartościowego ziarna do komory osadczej. Przy separacji zanieczyszczeń różnych zbóż otrzymano modele regresji, określające zależność efektu czyszczenia i strat ziarna od przepustowości, prędkości powietrza w kanałach separacyjnych, ich parametrów, parametrów zasilających urządzeń i komór osadczych. W wyniku czyszczenia maszyną MS-4,5 otrzymano nasiona pierwszej i dugiej klasy. Jej przepustowość w porównaniu z maszyną SM-4 jest większa o 10 - 30%, a jednostkowe zużycie stali na tę konstrukcję i zużycie energii na napęd wentylatora są o 15 - 20% mniejsze.

The paper presents results of the studies dealing with evaluation of the horizontal projection of the trajectories of the tubers soiled to various degrees which were fed by rotary elevating drum on the Packman and Peis separators. Process of feeding separators with the crops of two levels of soiling was registered on the film by the Krasnogorsk 16 and Pentaflex AK 16 motion picture cameras and by the stroboscope method using still camera. There has been stated a decreased value of range of the horizontal throw of the tubers soiled at the surfaces in the range 7-11% when compared with the tubers soiled within the range og 1-3%. These differences are statistically significant. The decreased range of the throw of the tubers is the factor which can unfavourably affect uniform distribution of material separated by the separators of the machines harvesting potatoes.
