During the studies conducted in the years 2004–2005, in the Experimental Farm „Felin” of the University of Life Sciences in Lublin we assessed the effect of irrigation and plant density upon the yield and selected technological features (mean weight of root and the occurrence of empty spaces) in a few currently grown celeriac cultivars. A significant influence of the examined factors upon the quantity and quality of celeriac yield was demonstrated. On average, for the study years, the yield of non-watered plants ranged from 34.7 to 48.8 t ha⁻¹ and the yield of watered plants – from 47.1 to 66.3 t ha⁻¹. The increased plant density from 37.0 thousand pcs. to 55.6 thousand pcs. ha⁻¹ enabled us to obtain greater yield of non-watered plants by 15.6%, and of watered plants – by 21.5%. The examined factors affected the mean weight of root in the assessed celeriac cultivar, the sizes of empty spaces occurring in them, as well as the participation of roots with empty spaces in the marketable yield.
Arbuscular mycorrizal (AM) fungi may enhance plant growth and polyphenol production, however, there have been limited studies on the relationships between root colonization of different fungal species and polyphenol production on cultivated Allium porrum (garden leek). The effects of inoculation of AM fungi spores from Rhizophagus intraradices, Giga -spora margarita, Glomus geosporum, Paraglomus occultum, Claroideoglomus claroideum, and Glomus species on colonization of garden leek roots and symbiotic changes in polyphenol production and plant growth were evaluated in greenhouse experiments. There were significant differences (p < 0.05) in colonization of leek roots by AM fungi species. The greatest level of root colonization was recorded on plants inoculated with R. intraradices (73%) and the lowest level on C. claroideum (3.2%). Significant differences (p < 0.05) in plant height were recorded between AM inoculated plants and the controls. Polyphenol levels differed significantly (p < 0.05) between garden leek plants inoculated with AM fungi and the non-inoculated controls. The percentage increases in polyphenol (a derivative of kaempferol) on garden leeks inoculated with G. geosporum relative to the untreated controls ranged from 28 to 1123%. Due to symbiosis with different AM species, other polyphenols decreased in some instances (negative values) and increased in others for values of up to 590%. Results showed that AM fungi species exhibited remarkable differences in polyphenol levels in garden leeks. The high polyphenol production by garden leek plants inoculated with G. geosporum, and Glomus species could be exploited for enhanced resistance of garden leeks to insects and diseases. This research highlights an understudied area, notably the relationships between AM fungal inoculations, root colonizations and polyphenol production in garden leeks. The findings can be utilized to improve pest resistance and the quality of garden leek plants.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki trzyletniego doświadczenia polowego przeprowadzonego w Ogrodzie Botanicznym IHAR w Bydgoszczy. Ocenie poddano trzy mieszanki kępowych traw gazonowych. Komponentami mieszanki pierwszej (M I) były Festuca rubra (75%) i Lolium perenne (25%), W skład mieszanki drugiej (M II) wchodziły Festuca arundinacea (30%), Festuca ovina (50%) Lolium perenne (20%), Mieszankę trzecią (M III) tworzyły Festuca ovina (30%), Festuca rubra (35%) oraz Festuca heterophylla (35%). Ocenę systemów korzeniowych traw i innych cech trawników dokonywano w trzech terminach: wiosną (maj), latem (lipiec) i jesienią (październik).
The matter of soil pollution by heavy metals caused to increase of concerns about environment. The present study has been done by the aim of investigation on zinc metal accumulation on cupressus arizonica. To achieving this goal the one-year Cupressus arizonica species seedlings were placed in vases. After the passage of each 55-day time periods from the growth of seedlings, the shoot, root and soil of seedlings were sampled. Results were studied using ANOVA test and Duncan test. The lowest concentration rate of zinc in Cupressus arizonica species organs in the first time period in the shoot and root was 5 g and 1.9 g, respectively and in the second time period in the shoot and root was 2 g and 1.6 g, respectively. Based on the researches, Cupressus arizonica species appropriate for refining zinc metal polluted soils.
To investigate whether the fungicide Azoxystrobin improves the potential to maintain physio-biochemical functions, tomato plants were grown under either well-watered and deficit irrigation conditions. Drought-stressed tomato plants showed significant reductions in cell membrane stability (CMS), relative water content (RWC), relative water loss (RWL) and chlorophylls, growth attributes and leaflet and main stem anatomical features, while exhibited increases in contents of proline and total phenols, activities of catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO), fresh (FW) and dry (DW) weights of roots, and leaflet spongy tissue thickness compared to well-watered control plants. Under full irrigation, Azoxystrobin treatment significantly increased RWC and chlorophyll content, POD and PPO activities, root DW, number of fruits per plant and many features of leaflet and main stem, while significantly decreased CMS and RWL, root, shoot and plant lengths, shoot and plant FW, and stem xylem tissue thickness compared to the control plants sprayed with water. However, Azoxystrobin treatment ameliorated drought stress in tomato plants and significantly increased CMS and free proline content, activities of CAT, POD and PPO, and contents of free and total phenols, and root DW and number of fruits per plant, in addition to spongy tissue thickness of leaflet, but not affected chlorophylls and carotenoids contents, root FW, plant DW and most of anatomical features compared to the stressed plants without Azoxystrobin treatment. These results support that Azoxystrobin foliar application may have a positive effect on well-watered and drought-stressed tomato plants.
