In 1993–1997, 990 pupae of diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella L.) were collected from nine different varieties of Brasica oleracea L., grown on experimental farm near Kraków. Only 234 moths (23.6%) were recovered from the cocoons. The most important factor reducing the population of DBM was parasitization (65.1%). It varied between the years of observation and oscillated from 60% to 90.3%. Sixhundred and fourty four specimens of parasitic wasps belonging to 11 species from families: Ichneumonidae (5 species), Braconidae (3 species), Pteromalidae (2 species) and Eulophidae (1 species) were reared out. In each year of observations the most abundant species among DBM parasitoids was Diadegma fenestralis Holmgr. as it constituted 71.4% of all of the wasps reared. In the years 1994 and 1996 with low abundance of diamondback moth, D. fenestralis was the only species parasitizing 66.7% and 89.5% of the pest larvae
The aim of our paper was to identify the effect of physical activities on the reduction of stress among the elderly who regularly participated in a physical activity program and point out the positive effects of these exercises. The research sample consisted of a total of 202 elderly people from 64 to 78 years of age. 102 of them regularly exercised within the framework of the Motion studio program for the elderly organised by the University of the Third Age at Brno University of Technology. Other 100 seniors did not study and none of them exercised regularly. The level of stress was measured with the Stress Test (Selye, 1993, Křivohlavý, 2001).We looked for differences in the level of stress among seniors who exercise on a regular basis and those who do not exercise. We compared age, retirement time and all physiological stress-related difficulties. We used the Pearson correlation coefficient and the factual evaluation for statistical evaluation of the obtained data. The obtained results, indicate that the seniors who came regularly to the Motion studio showed less stress than the rest of the tested elders. They showed lower level in the zone of moderate stress, on average 4.5 points (men exhibited slightly higher stress level – 5 points – than women – 4 points) compared to the average of 8.1 points among seniors without sports and regular exercise (again, men showed higher levels of stress – 8.3 points – than women – 7.9 points). We found that the time spent in retirement does not statistically significantly affect the level of stress among the elderly (0.05 % significance level). The results indicated that the main stressors in old age are primarily physiological factors, which determine the level of life quality and often cause protracted diseases, particularly those related to musculoskeletal system. The time spent in retirement does not statistically significantly affect the level of stress of the elderly. Seniors without sports and regular exercise who reported higher levels of stress complained more about their cardiovascular condition, loss of appetite and neurological problems. The research has shown that seniors who are regularly engaged in physical activities are less stressed than seniors without sports and regular exercise.
This paper proposes a reduction of energy consumption in the implementation of semi-finished components of the planetary gear through the use of foundry technology. The authors compared the calculated amount of sliced material for individual pieces made in technology to bring the full semi-solid and prototype castings. Next presents the selection of materials, development of casting technology parts analyzed, and the various stages of their execution. The final result was semifinished, which, after final machining are to be submitted for testing supplies.
Recently, algae have become significant organisms for biological purification of wastewater since they are able to accumulate plant nutrients, heavy metals, pesticides, organic and inorganic toxic substances and radioactive matters in their cells/bodies. Biological wastewater treatment systems with micro algae have particularly gained importance in last 50 years and it is now widely accepted that algal wastewater treatment systems are as effective as conventional treatment systems. These specific features have made algal wastewaters treatment systems an significant low-cost alternatives to complex expensive treatment systems particularly for purification of municipal wastewaters. By this method 70 % of biological oxygen demand, 66 % of chemical oxygen demand, 71 % total nitrogen, 67 % of phosphorus, 54 % volatile solid and 51 % of dissolved solid was reduced.
This study was conducted on a storage reservoir situated in a valley, in the lower course of the Sząbruk stream in north-eastern Poland, the Olsztyn Lakeland mesoregion. The catchment area of the Sząbruk stream consists of an agricultural and an afforested part. A storage reservoir is found in the lower part of the Sząbruk stream valley. The reservoir was built 25 years ago. It is enclosed by a dike and equipped with an outlet box. Outflows from the reservoir pass through the terminal segment of the Sząbruk stream to Lake Wulpińskie. The results of the experiment indicate that the calcium content of water evacuated from the catchment was determined by the type and intensity of catchment use, ranging from 22.3 mg Ca⋅dm-3 to 178 mg Ca⋅dm-3. The highest calcium concentrations, 113 mg Ca⋅dm-3 on average, were noted in the agricultural catchment connected to a drainage network; lower levels, 78.7 mg Ca⋅dm-3, were found in farming areas drained via ditches, while the lowest Ca content in water, 38.7 mg Ca⋅dm-3 on average, was determined in outflows from afforested catchments. Calcium concentrations were lower during the growing season in all studied catchment types. The calcium load discharged from the catchment dependnded on the catchment management. The highest calcium loss per area unit was observed in the drained agricultural catchment (76.6 kg Ca⋅ha-1⋅year-1), followed by the catchment drained via ditches (56.3 Ca⋅ha-1⋅year-1) and the afforested catchment (31.8 Ca⋅ha-1⋅year-1). Despite the inflow of calcium-rich drainage water, calcium concentrations decreased by 11%, from 56.8 mg Ca⋅dm-3 to 50.3 mg Ca⋅dm-3, after the stream’s waters passed through the storage reservoir. An increase in Ca levels was noted in the girdling ditch. The flow of water through the ditch minimizes sedimentation, and higher quantities of Ca were supplied with drainage water. The reservoir accumulated 242.4 kg Ca per ha in the course of one year, mostly in the growing season (83%). The above indicates high involvement of biological processes. The reservoir fulfilled the role of a barrier inhibiting calcium loss from the catchment.
The aim of this on-site experiment is to evaluate and compare efficiencies of currently utilized biological additives to reduce emissions of dust and bioaeorsol in a confinement swine house. The mean reduction rate of total dust only after spray ranged was approximately 30% for all the treatments, compared to initial level before spraying additives which was found to reduce the initial level of total dust significantly (p<0.05). The mean reduction rate of all the treatments at 1hr after spraying was about 24% which was 6% lower than only after spray. Since 3hr after spraying, however, total dust level fluctuated inconstantly for all the treatments, besides application of soybean oil. The mean reduction rates of all the treatments only after spraying as compared to initial level before spraying were about 53% for total airborne bacteria (p<0.01) and 51% for total airborne fungi (p<0.01), respectively. At 1hr after spraying, the reduction rate of total airborne fungi averaged to about 35% for all the treatments (p<0.05), while insignificant reductions of total airborne bacteria were found only in the treatments with salt water, soybean oil, artificial spice, and essential oil (p>0.05). The fluctuations of total airborne bacteria and fungi, which were similar to total dust, were observed for all the treatments 3 hr after spray.
Monoculture of modern cereal crops are popular due to the technical and organizationalreasons. They are easier in crop husbandry, quality and product use. However, in monoculture chemical protection of crops is a norm, due to the fact that they are more susceptible to diseases, pests and sometimes weed infestation. In order to keep high and stable grain yields and quality in monoculture one has to use high inputs. Experimentally and practically it has been proved that cultivar and species mixtures can constitute an alternative to cultivar growing in pure stands. It has been found that in mixtures opperate different epidemiological and ecological factors, which lead to considerable disease reduction, pest and weed control, which finally result in higher and more stable grain yields than in barley varietes grown in pure stands. The results of two years field experiment designed to evaluate epidemiological and economical effects of winter barley cultivar mixtures are presented. The studies were carried out in two sites – ExperimentalStation for Variety Testing Słupia Wielka (in Wielkopolska region) and Plant Breeding Station Bąków (Opole District). This two sites were 300 km away from each other, and had different soiland meteorological conditions. In the experiment impact of different barley cultivars and their different two- and three-component mixtures were tested with reduced dosages of fungicidies on grain yield in the mixtures compared with pure stands were evaluated.
Background: Intense pulsed light (IPL) technology has been used by cosmetic and medical practitioner since 1990. Initially it was only used to remove unnecessary hair, but over time, it began to be used for anti-aging treatments, removing erythema, acne lesions, and acne scars. Aim of the study: The aim of this study is to investigate how the use of IPL technology has affected acne lesions and to determine whether the condition of the patient’s skin has improved. Material and methods: A young woman who was struggling with ordinary acne underwent a series of treatments using IPL technology to reduce skin eruptions. Results: The study subject was a 22-year-old patient who had been suffering from acne vulgaris for several years. The skin on her face exhibited changes in the form of pustules, blackheads, and lumps. The entire treatment series was 10 weeks. Prior to the procedure, a very thorough interview was conducted, during which all contraindications were excluded. The Hellgren-Vincent scale, which is used to determine the severity of acne lesions, accurately determines the amount of skin lesions in the form of lumps, pustules, and blackheads. Conclusions: As demonstrated by this study, IPL technology has been beneficial for the condition of the patient’s skin. Pictures from before and after unambiguously indicate the positive effect of intense pulsed light. There has been great improvement in the skin’s overall condition, with reduced acne lesions (lumps, pustules, blackheads).
The aim of the studies was to establish in vitro conditions for the culture of pea and lupin embryos as the first step in the development of an in vitro assisted single seed descent technique for the attainment of homozygous populations. Materials for the study included of pea, and narrow-leafed and yellow lupin cultivars. Embryos dissected from mature but still-green seeds were cultured in vitro on two modified MS media and under three temperature regimes. Shoot and root lengths of regenerated plants were measured after 7, 14 and 21 days of culture. For pea plants full-strength MS medium with 4 g l−1 agar and temperature 22/ 20°C (day/night) appeared to be the most conducive to shoot and root development, whereas for lupin plants lower temperatures were more propitious: 12°C in the dark for narrow-leafed lupin and 16/ 12°C (day/night) for yellow lupin. Almost all the cultured embryos developed into plants, but not all the regenerated plants survived acclimation to ex vitro conditions.
