Larvae and pupae of Macropeza albitarsis MEIGEN, 1818 are described and illustrated for the first time. Aquatic larvae with a paddle-like anal segment armed with dorsal and ventral broom hairs are good swimmers. Within the family, larvae of the genus Macropeza MEIGEN, 1818 are unique in having broom hairs on the anal segment and a pair of multiple setae p on the head.
The pupae of Alepia montana Bravo, Alepia truncata Bravo, Lago et Castro and Psychoda simillima Tonnoir, belonging to the subfamily Psychodinae, are described and illustrated. The pupae of A. montana and A. truncata were collected in tree holes in the city of San Ramón de la Nueva Orán, Province of Salta and the pupa of P. simillima in small pool on the nameless stream near El Hoyo city, Province of Chubut, Argentina. The pupa of P. simillima is similar to other pupae of the genus Psychoda Latreille, being distinguished by some features in the last segment and by respiratory trumpet. These are the first pupae described of any species of the genus Alepia Enderlein.
The egg, larvae and the pupae of Chironomus filitarsis (Kieffer) are described fo the first time and the imagines in both the sexes are revised. The duration of life stages a brief account of food and feeding, and emergence are also stated in this paper.
First and last instar larva and pupa of Laccoptera foveolata (Boheman, 1856) are described in detail along with notes on the life history. The beetles were observed to breed from June to August. The host plant of the insect is Ipomoea nil (Convolvulaceae), as the entire life cycle is completed on this plant. A small, oval ootheca containing a single egg is partially covered by fecal matter. There are five larval instars; the larvae and pupa are typical for the specialized cassidines. Imagines develop in about 35-40 days from the fertilized egg deposited in the ootheca.
The first and last instars of Isturgia roraria (Fabricius, 1777) caterpillars are described and illustrated in details. The mouthparts, antennae and thoracic legs are used for the first time for the description within the genus Isturgia (Hübner, 1823). The description and complete illustration of thoracic leg of adult larva with numeration and nomenclature of all pores and setae are included. Some important characters of intermediate larval instars are recorded. New morphological details of pupa are presented.
The egg, three larval instars and pupa of Hesperus rufipennis (Gravenhorst) are described for the first time, with the illustrations of structural features provided. Differences in the morphological structure of its larval instars (L₁₋₃) cover: the number of setae on profemur and protibia, number of setae on tarsungulus, chaetotaxy of abdominal tergites, the structure of antenna and urogomphi, body colour and measurements. Diagnostic characters of immature stages of H. rufipennis are listed. Modifications of the keys to known eggs, larvae and pupa of the European Staphylininae species are proposed. Some data on its biology (life cycle, duration of immature stages, ecological preferences) are also given. It is a univoltine species with summer larvae and wintering imagines. Considering its environmental preferences and biology, this rove beetle may be of essential importance as a good umbrella species and environmental state indicator as well.
