The aim of the study was to estimate the quantity of Dermanyssus gallinae occurring during one diurnal cycle in specific sites within a poultry-house, and then to use special traps against Dermanyssus gallinae to evaluate the intensity of invasion. The study was carried out in a poultry farm containing approximately 85 thousand birds. Traps 20 cm long and 1 cm in diameter were placed in the central part of the poultry- -house under feeding sites at a height of 0.5; 1.0 and 1.8 m from the floor in order to collect the mites and their various stages of development (eggs, larvae and nymphs). The largest number of Dermanyssus gallinae and their developmental stages (1750) collected within a twenty- four hour period was contained in tube-traps at a height of 1.8 m, and the smallest number (588) at a height of 1.0 m from the floor. The number of stored eggs was also dependant upon the level of paper tubes, e.g. females of Dermanyssus gallinae stored 2.29, 1.28 eggs and 2.89 eggs at heights of 0.5 m, 1.0 m and 1.8 m, respectively. Moreover, it was noted that the least number of mites were found in the tube-traps between 1 and 9 am independent of the height of the trap from the floor. Tube-traps may be used as one of several auxiliary, mechanical procedures in poultry red-mite control. Removing the tube-traps in the afternoon and burning them outside the poultry-house limits Dermanyssus gallinae invasion.
