The synthesis presents the results of studies carried out in Poland and neighbouring countries on the transformation of soils on the dehydrated fen-peats. The synthesis includes the review of about 300 published papers. Various transformation processes in soil structure and other physical properties, with special attention paid to the changes in pore volume and related retention abilities and air-water ratio in soils, are described. Also discussed are the biological and chemical changes in soil material, both the mineral and organic one. Phenomena associated with degradation, such as the decline in the productivity of these soils, and the way of their agricultural use are also highlighted together with the evaluation of the impact of transformation of dehydrated peat soils on the needs of environment protection.
