The investigation of the influence of chosen neutral and dianionic molecules on K+ determination by the vaiinomycin liquid membrane electrode is the subject of the present paper. These investigations were carried out in water solutions in the presence of acetate buffer pH = 4. The strongest effects on the membrane potential were observed in the cases of compounds possessing a benzene ring with some functional groups in ortho position.
The effect of different rates and methods of fertilizer nitrogen application and potassium nutrition on the root nodule formation of faba bean plants var. Nadwiślański and on their nitrogenase activity was studied. It was found that fertilizer N depressed the nodule formation and nitrogenase activity, but inhibitory effect of N was smaller when it was supplied to the leaves instead to the soil. Plants growing at higher K level were in a position allowing on better development of nodules and consequently higher N₂₋ fixation.
The effect of low potassium regimes on two lines, ILL 6796 (salt-tolcrant) and ILL 6439 (salt-sensitive), of lentil (Lens culinaris) was studied in a pot experiment under glasshouse conditions. Plants of the two lines were treated with 78, 39, 19.5, and 9.75 mg K·L⁻¹ in Rorison’s nutrient solution. ILL 6796 excelled ILL 6439 in biomass production under varying K regimes. Of the various organic solutes measured in the present study only total soluble sugars proved to be helpful in discriminating the lines, i.e., total sugars increased consistently in ILL 6796 with a decrease in K level of the growth medium, whereas in ILL 6439 they decreased significantly with a decrease in K levels. ILL 6796 showing high efficiency for K utilisation (high shoot growth) could be of great economic value in terms of its use in soils deficient in K.
Vicia faba plants were grown under drought conditions and variously supplemented with calcium. Drought stress markedly inhibited the growth of Vicia faba plants. Ca²⁺ ameliorated to a large extent this inhibition; fresh weight, dry mass, chlorophyll and water contents were variably improved. Membranes were, also, negatively affected by drought stress and percentage leakage was elevated. Concomitantly, the efflux of K⁺ and Ca²⁺ was enhanced by drought but lowered by supplemental Ca²⁺. In addition, membranes of droughted plants were sensitive to the Ca²⁺ channel blockers lanthanum, nifedipine or verapamil more than those of control plants. These blockers significantly increased the efflux of K⁺ and Ca²⁺ as well as percentage leakage particularly in those of droughted plants. The above results indicated that the functioning of the calcium channels was negatively affected when Vicia faba was grown under drought conditions. However, much of the drought-induced disorders including sensitivity towards the applied calcium channel blockers could be ameliorated by supplemental Ca²⁺.
