Changes in population abundance of submerged Sphagnum denticulatum Brid. were studied in an acidic and oligotrophic lake in NW Poland over three years. Individuals were counted in a moss carpet at a depth of 2.5 m on 4 experimental plots, 1 × 1 m each, every 30 days for 36 months using the SCUBA method. PAR intensity was seasonally variable (in winter higher than in summer). Changes in water pH, conductivity, HCO3- concentration, hydration and sediment pH were statistically insignificant (p > 0.05). In the summer of the second study year the moss carpet disappeared almost completely due to a massive bloom of filamentous green algae. Periods of growth, regression and regeneration were observed in the population. The stabilisation of population size took 24 months and followed the pattern: slight fluctuations, then rapid growth and repetition of slight fluctuations. The first stage lasted nine, the second four and the third nine months. These stages took place irrespective of seasons, temperature or PAR intensity. Each rapid increase in abundance lasted about 30 days, at PAR intensity >20% and water temperature ranging from 11 to 16oC (in winter, spring or autumn). The regression stage brought about by the algal bloom started in the second year (in summer) and lasted six months (until the end of January in the third year). The population regeneration began in winter (in February, water temperature 3.0oC, PAR about 20%, ice cover 0.15 m) and finished with the end of spring. The population of S. denticulatum shows a repetitive pattern of abundance variations, which is seriously disturbed in summer, especially after a warm spring, by a massive bloom of filamentous green algae.
In total 273 stands of the invasive species Fallopia (Reynoutria) japonica in Oświęcim valley (southern Poland) were examined, in terms of cover, area, abundance, height and width of shoots, and presence of coexisting species. F. japonica occurred more frequently in wastelands and was the rarest in forests. Statistical analyses revealed some significant differences among habitats with particular traits. The most abundant populations, occupying the largest area, were recorded in wetlands and along railway lines. Populations were very diverse in terms of their percentage of flowering shoots within a particular type of habitat, however, the highest percentage was again observed in wetlands and along railways. In forests, gardens and in wastelands the contribution of flowering shoots was lower. The presence of accompanying species in the studied populations was generally low, most frequently stands of F. japonica were mono-specific with a slightly higher cover of accompanying species being recorded in F. japonica populations in forests. The highest proportion of the tallest shoots within a patch of F. japonica was observed in wetlands, while the lowest was in wastelands and in railways. The individuals with the thickest shoots were present in forests and wetlands and the thinnest in wastelands. Despite the simplified nature of the data collection the study demonstrated that F. japonica is more vigorous and forms larger stands occupying larger areas in some of the analyzed habitats. The study showed that in manmade habitats the considered species has favourable conditions for its development and further spread and this is of concern to conservationists and land managers as it can pose a threat to native biodiversity.
In 2004, monitoring catches were performed on signal crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus (Dana) and spiny-cheek crayfish, Orconectes limosus (Raf.), in order to estimate the abundance of the catchable populations in Lake Pobłędzie (northeastern Poland). Catches were performed using 58 Evo traps along a part of lake with an area of 1.65 ha. In catches conducted on September 6 and 7, a total of 479 specimens of signal crayfish and 29 spiny-cheek crayfish were caught, marked, and released. After twelve days, repeat catches were conducted during which 476 specimens of signal crayfish, including 66 marked specimens, and 36 specimens of spiny-cheek, including 5 marked specimens, were caught. The average total length of the caught signal crayfish was 11.7 ± 1.06 cm (7.6 - 15.0 cm), while that of the spiny-cheek species was 9.3 ± 0.65 cm (7.5 - 10.7 cm). The average catchable population abundance per unit of studied surface area was calculated at 2094 specimens ha⁻¹ for signal crayfish and 127 specimens ha⁻¹ for spiny-cheek crayfish. Taking into consideration that this method underestimates the population abundance of crayfish from the lower size classes, it is estimated that the actual catchable population abundance in Lake Pobłędzie might be higher by about 25%.
Materiał badawczy stanowiło 15 prób nasion soi. Określono masę tysiąca nasion, ciężar objętościowy, ilość zanieczyszczeń, pH, wilgotność, aktywność wody (aw), zawartość tłuszczu, kwasowość tłuszczu oraz wilgotność krytyczną nasion. Występowanie grzybów określono z wykorzystaniem pożywek RBA, DG18 oraz YpSs i inkubacji w 25°, 37° i 45°C. Najwięcej grzybów wyizolowano na DG18 w 25°C. Stwierdzono ujemną korelację pomiędzy masą tysiąca nasion a liczbą grzybów termofilnych. Zaobserwowano dodatnią zależność pomiędzy kwasowością tłuszczu a liczbą grzybów mezofilnych i kserofilnych. Wykazano dodatnią korelację pomiędzy wilgotnością nasion a liczbą kolonii grzybów kserofilnych. Odwrotnie proporcjonalną zależność wykazano między aktywnością wody nasion a liczbą grzybów na pożywce YpSs (37°C). Stwierdzone zależności wskazują na związek pomiędzy jakością nasion a liczbą kolonii grzybów je zasiedlających.
Crabapple Island, a 4-ha island covered with a mixed forest dominated by Tilio - Carpinetum Traczyk 1962, is situated on Lake Bełdany (53°42'N, 21°35'E) at a distance of about 120 m from the mainland. Materials were collected by using the CMR (catch-mark-release) method during five 7-day censuses conducted each year in 1994-1998. The recruitment of new individuals to the trappable part of the bank vole and yellow-necked mouse populations was compared with respect to the number of new-captured individuals, their age, and reproductive status. The age of new-captured individuals was estimated from growth curves. It was observed that when the populations of the two species were more abundant, the first-captured individuals were older than when population numbers were lower. The proportion of mature individuals (including pregnant females) in the group of all individuals captured for the first time was higher for the yellow-necked mouse than for the bank vole (48 and 15%, respectively). In both species, the number of mature new-captured individuals was negatively correlated with the total number of conspecific females present in the population. In the case of the bank vole (probably also of the yellow-necked mouse), this may be related with territoriality of mature females. As yellow-necked mice were first captured at an older age than bank voles, this may be a source of errors in estimates of numbers of immature individuals and, consequently, in the analysis of the population structure of this species.
