High quality planting material is the basis for good strawberry yields. The productivity of strawberry mother plants depends on many factors, but there is little published work on the effects of type and initial size of mother plants on the quality of daughter plants. In the presented study, strawberry mother plants (cultivar ‘Elsanta’) were grown in an unheated tunnel in plastic pots filled with peat-based substrate (5 dm3). The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of type (fresh-dug plants and frigo) and initial size (A and A+ plants) of strawberry mother plants on selected parameters of daughter plants (crown diameter, fresh and dry weight as well as number and area of leaves). The study was carried out in 2006 and 2007. Strawberry mother plants were planted in the second decade of April and daughter plants were detached in the second decade of August. All measurements were performed on the second daughter plant on the mother plant runner. Statistical analysis showed that type of mother plants had a significant effect on number of leaves in daughter plants. Daughter plants obtained from mother plants established from fresh-dug plants had the highest number of leaves. The initial size of mother plants significantly influenced the fresh and dry weight of daughter plants. Smaller mother plants (“A-size”) produced daughter plants with higher fresh and dry weight. The results obtained in the second year of the study were affected by high incidence of powdery mildew.

Proposal for a seed certification scheme

100%
Identity of reproductive material is essential in artificial forest regeneration. Legal regulations cannot guarantee proof of identity. State and private organizations have been cooperating to develop a seed certification scheme in forestry. Representative samples of forest reproductive material are taken at any production stage starting at the time of seed collection through to plant delivery as well as at time of changing ownership. The first sample at the time of seed harvest is used to determine the maximum potential yield of living germinants from the total collection. Furhtermore this and the other samples are tested randomly at a determined level of intensity or in case of doubt by Isozyme/DNA methods. Sampling techniques have been tested and described in a handbook. The biochemical-genetic tests are being standardized for all major commercial species. Forest reproductive material having been sampled in the described way will be certified "of provable identity" by a neutral agency. The Scheme will be open to anyone complying with the rules laid down. Larger forest owners have confirmed to preferably purchase "forest plants of provable identity".
Potted chrysanthemum is one of the most important floriculture plants which commercially produced in greenhouses where silicon (Si) is available in limited concentration because of using several substrates as growing media. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the supplemental effects of Si nutrition on growth, flowering, flower longevity as well as shelf life and nutrients content of potted chrysanthemum in relation to Si application. Moreover, the effects of Si treatment on some physiological parameters i.e. chlorophyll content, stomatal resistance, membrane stability index (MSI) and total carbohydrates were also investigated. Si application as K₂SiO₃ was added whether as foliar application at 25, 75 and 125 mg L⁻¹ Si or soil drenches at 50, 100 and 150 mg L⁻¹ Si. Except plant height and leaf area, the other vegetative growth and flowering characters were improved as a result of both Si supplementation methods compared with untreated control. Flowering was earlier and shelf life was longer in Si-supplemented than nonsupplemented plants. Generally, Si application increased the macro and micronutrients concentrations (except Ca) estimated in this study. Chlorophyll content, stomatal resistance, MSI and total carbohydrates were increased among Si treated plants. Improving the floricultural traits, extending longevity and shelf life of greenhouse grown chrysanthemum may give an impact of its greenhouse commercial production if appropriate level was used.
Strawberry is propagated vegetatively. Nowadays, traditional bare-root transplants are often replaced with plantlets (plug plants) produced from runner tips. The nutrient level and type of growing medium may influence the quality of planting material. Phosphorus and potassium are important elements for plant metabolism. Insufficient supply of plants with these elements negatively influences the rooting and plant vegetative growth. The objective of the study was to evaluate the influence of substrate and monopotassium phosphate (MKP) on rooting and quality of strawberry plantlets grown in the greenhouse soilless system. ‘Elsanta’ mother plants were planted in containers and set on a special rack in the greenhouse. Emerging plantlets were set (clipped with metal clips) in micro-pots filled with peat or coconut substrate. Four concentrations of MKP in the growing medium were applied: 0, 0.22, 0.44, 0.66 g dm-3. Rooting of plantlets was carried out before cutting them off from the mother plants for a period 7, 10 or 14 days. The investigations have showed a very similar dynamics of root formation both in coconut substrate and in peat. A significant effect of the application of monopotassium phosphate on rooting of strawberry plantlets was observed. The optimal dose of MKP depended on the length of rooting period of plantlets. After 7 days of rooting the highest root weight was recorded in case of plantlets rooted in the growing media supplemented with 0.44 or 0.66 g dm-3 MKP. After 10 and 14 days of rooting even the lowest dose of MKP (0.22 g dm-3) resulted in significantly stronger root growth in comparison with not fertilized control plantlets. MKP also significantly influenced the growth of plantlets after transplanting them into bigger containers. The highest quality plantlets were obtained at the dose 0.44 or 0.66 g MKP dm-3 of substrate.

We have investigated genetic diversity and the mating system of Scots pine plus trees from the Tuchola Forests – Poland, using allozymes as genetic markers. The studied plus trees possess high genetic diversity (expected heterozygosity He = 0.427) and low inbreeding (Wright’s index F = –0.028), which is comparable to Scots pine trees observed in other studies in natural populations and seed orchards. The mating system analyses revealed that almost all offspring produced by the plus trees were due to outcrossing (tm = 0.983), with no apparent bi-parental inbreeding. The estimate of correlation of paternity indicated that each of mother trees is pollinated on average by a relatively large number of effective males (Nep = 30.3). The observed genetic diversity and mating system patterns indicate that the seeds produced by the studied plus trees possess high genetic variation needed in reforestation processes.
Badania prowadzono w celu określenia, czy inokulacja grzybami tworzącymi mikoryzę arbuskularną (AMF) i stosowanie kompostu poprawi tolerancyjność szałwii omszonej na NaCl, CaCl2 i Na2CO3. Rośliny nieinokulowane i inokulowane AMF uprawiano w podłożu bez kompostu i w podłożu wzbogaconym w kompost i traktowano NaCl, CaCl2 i Na2CO3 w stężeniu 0, 11,68 i 23,36 g∙dm-3.
Due to increasing demand of medicinal plants (MPs), quality and safety more attention to the plant health should be paid. Among herb pathogens, especially fungi cause serious diseases in these plants decreasing yield and quality of herbal raw material. Some species, i.e. Fusarium sp., Alternaria sp., Penicillium sp. are known as mycotoxin producers. Paradoxically, self-treatment with herbal raw material can expose the patient to mycotoxin activity. In tissues of some MPs species, asymptomatically endophytic fungi residue. It is known that they are able to influence a biosynthesis of secondary metabolites in their host plant or produce biologically active compounds. Until recently these microorganisms have been neglected as a component of MPs, the reason why there have unexplored bioactivity and biodiversity. The paper presents an overview of herbal plants that are used in the treatment of nervous system diseases. Pathogenic fungi that infect these plants are described. It focused mainly on species producing harmful mycotoxins. The publication presents a list of these mycotoxins and a brief description of their effects on human health. The second part of this article provides information on the occurrence of endophytic fungi in herbal plants and their effects on human health. Coexistence of fungi and medicinal plants is not fully understood but can be crucial to ensure health and safety of patients with neurological diseases and mental disorders.
Więcej krzewów otrzymano stosując oczka z pędów o jednym kwiecie w kwiatostanie otwartym i w czasie opadania płatków, mniej - z oczek z pędów o pąkach ściśniętych. Najwięcej krzewów róż uzyskano z oczek pochodzących z dolnych części pędów, a najlepszą jakość - przy użyciu oczek z górnych i środkowych części pędów.
The present study was conducted in 2014 vegetation season in a vineyard of Giresun Hazelnut Research Institute. Isabella (Vitis labrusca L.) grape cultivar were treated with four different boric acid (H3BO3) doses (control, 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%) at two different periods (a week before and after full-bloom). The effects of foliar boron treatments on yield, quality and leaf nutrients were investigated. Boric acid treatments positively influenced cluster weight, width and volumes and increasing values were observed with increasing boron doses. Boric acid treatments also influenced berry homogeneity and yielded more homogeneous appearance. Chlorophyll contents increased with increasing boron treatments. The greatest yield, cluster length, cluster volume, cluster size, cluster width, berry width and leaf area were obtained from 0.3% boric acid treatments. In general, leaf nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, zinc and copper concentrations increased, but potassium and iron concentrations decreased with increasing boron doses. As compared to control treatment, all treatments had broader leaf sizes and higher chlorophyll contents. Especially 0.3% boric acid treatments had quite positive influences on quality, size and color homogeneity. Considering the nutrients and pH level of experimental soils, it was concluded that foliar nutrient treatments may support plant growth and development and 0.3% boric acid treatments were recommended for high quality and quantity yields in Isabella grape cultivar.

Największą liczbę pędów I rzędu miały krzewy uzyskane z oczek pochodzących z górnych części zrazów.
Two inoculums: Effective Microorganisms (EM) specimen available on the market and microbiological BAF1 inoculum, were applied in the experiment. The plants were cultivated in the growth chamber equipped with shelves with fluorescent or LED lamps. The highest number of inflorescences was under the influence of white color of light emitted by fluorescent lamps and blue color of light emitted by LED lamps, especially after application of BAF1 inoculum. Irrespective of microbiological inoculum, no significant effect of the color of light and type of lamps on such traits as height of leaves layer, number of leaves, greening index of leaves (SPAD) and length of inflorescences, was found. The white color light emitted by fluorescent lamps stimulated actinobacteria multiplication, especially after EM application. Regardless of the inoculum application, it was the blue color light emitted by LED lamps that stimulated the multiplication of moldy fungi. After the use of fluorescent lamps, the increase in dehydrogenase activity was observed, especially after the application of BAF1 inoculum. The activity of acid phosphatase was stimulated by blue and white+blue light emitted by LED lamps. The increase in the activity of urease was observed under fluorescent lamps emitting the green, blue and white color of light, after the application of EM.
This study was conducted in order to determine if inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and soil amendment with compost would enhance the tolerance of fountain grass to high level of salinity and alkalinity found in urban soils. AMF-inoculated and non-inoculated plants were planted in growing media non-amended and amended with compost and irrigated with water containing 3.3 g NaCl∙dm-3, 10.5 g Na2CO3∙dm-3, or 6.3 g CaCl2∙dm-3. Electrical conductivity (EC) of each watering solution was 6.3 S∙m-1. Plants were watered with salty waters every week until some leaves were necrotic. All the investigated salts decreased the decorative value of fountain grass and the percentage of root colonization by AMF. NaCl and Na2CO3 also decreased the dry matter of plants. Mycorrhization improve growth parameters and aesthetic value of fountain grass treated with all the tested salts and cultivated without compost supply. Compost supply was beneficial for fountain grass growth and quality if plants were cultivated in substrates unpolluted with NaCl, CaCl2, and Na2CO3.
