In growing maize, an increase in the content of phenolic compounds and selected phenolic acids in soil was found after the incorporation of white mustard, buckwheat, spring barley, oats and rye mulches into the soil. The highest content of phenolic compounds in soil was found after oats mulch incorporation (20% more than in the control soil). The highest content of selected phenolic acids was found for the soil with the oats and rye mulch. Among the phenolic acids investigated, ferulic acid was most commonly found in the soil with the plant mulches. However, two phenolic acids: the protocatechuic and chlorogenic acid, were not detected in any soil samples (neither in the control soil nor in the mulched soil). At the same time, a decrease in the primary weed infestation level in maize was found in the plots with all the applied plant mulches, especially on the plots with oats, barley and mustard. The plant mulches were more inhibitory against monocotyledonous weeds than dicotyledonous ones. During high precipitation events and wet weather, a rapid decrease in the content of phenolic compounds in soil and an increase in the primary weed infestation level in maize were observed.
Scorzonera hispanica is a rich source of inulin – a glycoside which has a positive effect on human and animal organisms. The paper presents studies on fungi threatening the cultivation of scorzonera. Soil mulching with intercrop cover crops such as oats, tansy phacelia and spring vetch had a positive effect on the population and healthiness of the seedlings and the roots of the studied plant. The following fungi were most frequently isolated from the infected underground organs of scorzonera: Alternaria alternata, A. scorzonerae, Botrytis cinerea, Cylindrocarpon didymum, Fusarium culmorum, F. oxysporum, F. solani, Rhizoctonia solani, Phytophthora sp. and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. Among the applied mulching plants, oats proved to be the most effective in inhibiting the occurrence of the enumerated fungi species.
The study was conducted in the Experimental Station of University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wrocław in 2008–2009. Using mulch consisting of rye and hairy vetch in sugar beet cultivation decreased the number of weeds during emergence of sugar beet. The application of straw from previous crop increased the number of weeds during spring time and decreased dry matter of weeds during harvest. Reduced rate of nitrogen from 120 to 80 kg/ha decreased total number of weeds during spring by 24.3% as well as dry matter of weeds during harvest of sugar beet by 53.9%.
A field experiment was carried out in Koniczynka near Toruń in 2000–2008. During eight years of investigation a weed population was observed and analyzed in three tillage systems of sugar beet crop mustard mulch, rye mulch, phacelie mulch and plough mustard. The weed number in white mustard, winter rye, and tensy phacelia mulches decreased in comparison to mustard crop ploughed in the autumn. The highest reduction of weed infestation were found on winter rye mulch (16.1%) in comparison to plough mustard. Differences in weed infestation intensity of Chenopodium album, Amaranthus retroflexus, Matricaria inodora, Stellaria media, Polygonum convolvulus and Veronica agrestis population in crop rotation depended on allelopathic properties of investigated mulch.
