The genetic variability between 5 open-pollinated varieties of rye (Secale cereale L) and between the components of rye hybrids was estimated using PCR-based marker analysis. The 22 maternal single crosses and 11 restorers were the components of hybrids investigated in the preofficial trials at the Plant Breeding and Acclimatization Institute in Radzików (PBAI), the Danko Breeding Co. Ltd (DBC) and in the Poznań Breeding Co. Ltd (PBC) during the 2001 growing season. The PCR system using semispecific primers targeting the intron-exon junction sequences of plant genes was applied for the evaluation of the genetic diversity of rye breeding materials. The genetic distances between varieties were relatively low; the coefficients of dissimilarity did not exceed 0.15. The highest average distance between maternal hybrids and restorers (0.28) was found in materials from PBAI, whereas in materials from PBC and DBC the average distances were lower and reached 0.21 and 0.20 respectively. The cluster analysis based on PCR data indicated that hybrid components that originated from different breeding centres exhibited different genetic characters.
The content of phenolic acids was determined by high performance thin-layer chromatography and densitometry and by HPLC in herbal preparation Naran N elaborated in the Department of Chemistry of the Medical University in Lublin, Poland. Methanolic extracts from plant components of Naran N: Anthodium Chamomillae, Herba Euphrasiae, Folium Plantaginis lanceolatae, Flos Calendulae were analysed. In the extract from Anthodium Chamomillae protocatechuic, vanillic, ferulic, caffeic, chlorogenic and p-coumaric acids were identified; in the extract from Herba Euphrasiae p-coumaric, ferulic, caffeic, protocatechuic, vanillic, chlorogenic and 3-hydroxybenzoic acids, in the methanolic extract from Folium Plantaginis lanceolatae vanillic, p-coumaric, caffeic, ferulic, chlorogenic and protocatechuic acids were found; the same number of phenolic acids were detected in the methanolic extract of Flos Calendulae, these were p-coumaric, caffeic, syringic, chlorogenic, vanillic, protocatechuic and ferulic acids.

Palaemon elegans, a new component of the Gulf of Gdańsk macrozoobenthos, colonised the southern Baltic coastal zone in the late 20th and early 21st century. Analysis of the stomach contents of P. elegans revealed 16 plant and animal taxa that these prawns had fed on. The principal dietary component was detritus, with a mean frequency of occurrence in stomachs of > 80%. The most frequently occurring plant components in the diet were algae from the genus Cladophora and the family Ectocarpaceae, while the most significant animal components were Harpacticoida, Chironomidae, Ostracoda and Gammarus spp. The results of the study show that the dietary composition of P. elegans differed significantly between stations and months. The foraging area consisted of two distinctive regions – the Inner Puck Bay, and the Outer Puck Bay together with the Dead Vistula River; two of the stations – Gdynia and Sopot – were distinct from all the others. However, no obvious seasonality in the food composition could be demonstrated.
