The experiment determined the effect of gibberellic acid applied prior to harvest on the contents of plant pigments in cut leaves of wild ginger (Asarum europaeum L.), cultivated in an unheated plastic tunnel and in the field. Foliar application of GA3 at a concentration of 100, 200, 400, 600 mg x dm-3 was repeated four times every two weeks. It has been proven that pre-harvest spraying of plants with gibberellic acid at a concentration of 100 mg x dm-3 has a positive effect on the content of photosynthetically active pigments in the leaves of A. europaeum cultivated in an unheated plastic tunnel. Application of GA3 at a concentration of 600 mg x dm-3 led to the accumulation of the greatest amount of anthocyanins in the leaves of Asarum europaeum cultivated both in the unheated plastic tunnel and in the field. The response of plants to GA3 application, expressed in the amount of flavonoids, depended on conditions related to the cultivation site. Pre-harvest treatment of A. europaeum plants with gibberellic acid at concentrations of 100-600 mg x dm-3 reduced the production of flavonoids in tunnel-grown wild ginger, but enhanced their accumulation in plants cultivated in the field. Pre-harvest application of gibberellic acid did not affect the fresh weight or dry mass content in plant material.
The purpose of this study was to compare the haematological profile and meat colour of calves slaughtered in summer and autumn. The material covered 42 calves chosen randomly i.e. 22 slaughtered in summer (June-August) and 20 in autumn (October-December). Haematological analyses included haematocrit (HCT), haemoglobin level (HGB), red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC) and platelets (PLT). The morphology of the erythrocytes and platelets, and differentiation of leucocytes were examined. The colour of meat was evaluated instrumentally by Minolta CIE L*a*b* and haematin pigment content was determined. The blood haemoglobin content in calves in the compared seasons was similar (11.3 g/L) and found within a normal range. Blood of calves from the autumn season showed higher HCT, RBC, and MCV values with concurrent lower MCH and MCHC values in comparison to the summer season. Blood of calves slaughtered in summer showed a higher content of WBC and a significantly higher percentage of lymphocytes as against blood of calves from the autumn. Meat of calves from the summer season was paler (higher L* value), and had a significantly (p ≤ 0.05) higher proportion of yellowness (b*). A brighter colour of meat from calves presented for slaughter in the summer season was noted along with a lower content of haematin pigments. Significant correlations were found between haematological variables (HGB, HCT and RBC, particularly) and haematin pigment content and meat lightness (L*) and redness (a*).

Comparison of test methods for coatings on wood

84%
The article compares two different testing methods of color changes of wood coatings with varying pigment content and varying surface quality before finishing. For both Xenotest as well as Exterior testing method were set up same conditions of wood surface and all samples were coated by the same amount of paint in three layers. Three different shades of paints were tested and then compared to reference sample without any finishing paint. We also tested influence of girt size to divergence of methods by using two different sizes of abrasives for preparation of finishing. Xenotest method is faster and has only slight differences in pattern of changes in comparison to exterior method but only in case of pigment paints. When transparent finishing pattes of changes were compared differences of methods were increasing while surface quality had very significant influence to color changes in case of Xenotest. To compare and predict quality of paint systems is more suitable to use faster Xenostest but on the other hand for obtaining exact values of color changes long term exterior tests are needed.

PCBs in phytoplankton in the Odra Estuary

84%
Eleven PCB congeners were determined in phytoplankton samples collected from the Odra Estuary at 9 stations in 2001–2002. The PCB concentrations were related to the temperature, turbidity, salinity, oxygen and redox potential of the water as well as to the pigment content in the samples. The results indicate that phytoplankton and the detritus derived from it play a crucial role in the distribution of PCBs, their transfer from the water column to sediments and from the Estuary to the sea. The species composition of the phytoplankton occurring in this area could also be very important as regards the sorption of PCBs.
Two groups of chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflora Tzvelev) representing the five cultivars were analysed to define their content of pigments in the inflorescence with the spectrophotometric method. It was observed that respective cultivars obtained as a result of the ionising radiation differed in their quality and quantity of flavonoids and carotenoids in the inflorescence as compared with original cultivars they originated from. Each of the chrysanthemum cultivars studied showed its own permanent repetitive profile of the occurrence of specific pigments, which gives a possibility of showing the distinctness of the cultivars analysed and their identification.
Content of chlorophylls a and b and of carotenoids has been investigated spectrophotometrically in needles of Pinus halepensis during the year, in polluted and unpolluted localities. Concentrations of all pigments were low in general; they fluctuated monthly and showed a tendency to decrease in the needles from polluted sites. The decrease appears to correspond with the level of air pollution. The chlorophylls a:b ratio, however, could apparently not be considered as time and degree of site pollution dependent.
Podczas procesu zaparzania herbaty do roztworu ekstrahowane są różne związki. Do związków pożądanych należą garbniki (bioaktywne składniki herbaty), natomiast azotany(V) i (III) to związki niepożądane w naparach herbacianych. Badano herbaty importowane do Polski z Chin, Malawi, Papui Nowej Gwinei, Indonezji i Sri Lanki. Najwyższe ilości tych azotanów stwierdzono w herbacie z Malawi, a wynosiły one odpowiednio 64,38 i 13,50 mg/kg.
In forest research and nursery practice there is often a need to monitor the condition and responses of trees to different stressors. Chlorophyll content in leaf is a good indicator of plant health and can be measured rapidly in many repetitions using the chlorophyll meter SPAD-502Plus. This practical tool provides the values of chlorophyll content in relative units (SPAD values), therefore it should be calibrated for each species to determine chlorophyll content in physiological units. In this study, the chlorophyll meter SPAD-502Plus was calibrated to be used for total chlorophyll (Chl), chlorophyll a (Chl a), chlorophyll b (Chl b) and carotenoids (Car) contents determination in leaves of Quercus petraea and Prunus serotina seedlings growing in different light environments. In the same leaf, SPAD values were measured with the Chl meter, and then photosynthetic pigments content (PP; chlorophyll and carotenoids) was consistently assessed using a conventional extraction method. The measurements were conducted once a month from May to November in three light treatments to obtain the widest possible range of the PP content values. To estimate total Chl content in leaves using the chlorophyll meter the quadratic polynomial functions: y = 0.0374x2 + 0.5345x + 0.5137 and y = 0.024x2 + 2.1998x – 32.7866 were obtained from the relationship between the Chl meter SPAD readings and total Chl determined spectrophotometrically for P. serotina and Q. petraea, respectively. Chl was higher under shade compared with full light regime and Car were linearly correlated with Chl. PP content was positively correlated with air temperature except for Car in P. serotina leaves. It was concluded that at the same soil conditions chlorophyll content in leaves of Q. petraea and P. serotina depended on species, light regimes and temperature of growth. The chlorophyll meter can be used as a practical tool to monitor and compare photosynthetic pigments content in leaves between tree species or populations acclimated to different environments together with a control of abiotic and biotic factors affecting pigments content and leaf optical properties.
Field experiment was carried out on the Didactic and Experimental Farm in Swadzim (52°26’ N; 16°45’ E) near Poznań, in the years 2004-2007. The three-factorial experiment was established in “split-plot” design with 4 replications. The reaction of two maize hybrid types on the application of 6 nitrogen doses and magnesium fertilization was studied. The influence of the studied factors on the content of chloroplast pigments in maize leaf blades in the phase of ear blooming (BBCH 67) was estimated. A greater content of chlorophyll a and a + b expressed in SPAD units was found in maize leaf blades of the stay-green type, as compared with leaf blades of the conventional Anjou 258 hybrid. Concentration of chlorophyll a and a + b was increasing in a linear way in the nitrogen range from 0 to 120 kg N·ha⁻¹, while the amount of chlorophyll expressed in SPAD units ranged from 0 to 150 kg N·ha⁻¹. The stay-green type hybrid showed to be better nourished with nitrogen, on the basis of chlorophyll content in maize leaf blades, in the phase of ear blooming (BBCH 67), in comparison with the conventional hybrid and, at the same time, a lower nitrogen fertilization was needed. A simultaneous fertilization with magnesium increased the content of chloroplast pigments, in comparison with the application of nitrogen only. With the increase in the assimilation area of a single maize plant and of a maize stand (LAI indicator), the chlorophyll concentration in leaf blades was decreasing in a linear way.
The aim of the research conducted in 2010-2012 on one-year, two-year and three-year shoots of three verities of Salix viminalis: ‘Bjor’, ‘Jorr’ and ‘Tora’, grown from 14, 15 and 16 year old stumps, was to compare the shoots of different age in terms of selected physiological characteristics, that is the concentration of chloroplast pigments, water balance of leaves and water content and dry matter of shoots. The content of chloroplast pigments (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and carotenoids) and the water balance were determined on the basis of RWC-relative water content and WSD-water saturation deficit indicators. Moreover, the water and dry matter content of one-year, two-year and three-year old willow shoots were determined. It was found that the age of the shoots differentiated the physiological parameters of willow varieties. The highest concentration of chlorophylls was reported in the leaves of three-year old shoots of the Bjor variety, in turn the highest concentration of carotenoids was found in the leaves of one-year old shoots of Jorr. Regardless of the age of the shoots, the highest rate of hydration of leaves and stems was a characteristic trait of the Tora variety, and the lowest was found in Jorr. High levels of the measured physiological parameters, such as chlorophyll a and b, carotenoids and relative water content in leaves obtained in the 5th rotation, that is 14th, 15th and 16th year of running the plantation, indicate a high physiological activity and hence high productivity of the studied willow varieties.
