The investigations were performed using 21 domestic varieties of winter wheal. The bases for the comparison were: viability, rate of growth and morphogenetic ability of the callus. The obtained classification of the varieties in the order of diminishing applicability for in vitro culture was as follows: (Jubilatka); (Mikon, Rosa); (Lama, Olma, Weneda); (Jawa); (Begra, Kamila); (Alba); (Grana), (Rada), (Arda); (Panda); (Emika); (Almari); (Parada) — (varieties in brackets do not significantly differ). Callus regenerated from the base of coleoptile and the first leaf shows higher ability for differentiation when compared to callus of mesocotyl origin. The final classification of the varieties was in good agreement with the previous one obtained by comparison of Ihe callus regenerated from the mesocotyl of the embryo. Moreover, best varieties with respect to the particular properties of the callus (fast growth, sustentation of viability during long-time culture and differentiation ability) were selected.
