The Directive 91/414/EEC limited the number of available insecticides used for controlling stored product pests and the others will be restricted in the EU by a new regulation (Directive 128/EEC). Contact insecticides at very limited number may be still used on stored grain and in storage structures and food production plants. These insecticides are applied directly to grain during handling on grain conveyors and elevators, or sprayed onto the surface of bag stacks, walls and floors of empty structures and transport vehicles. “Fogging” to control of flying insects sometimes treats spaces of structures, and stored grain is fumigated with products that generate phosphine. As rotation of insecticides is limited or even impossible, it is certain that new resistant strains of pest would develop soon. The other major consequences of EU regulations for stored product protection are listed in the paper.
