A new monobasic genus of parasitic mites, Phalarophilus fulicarius gen. nov., sp. nov. (Acariformes, Syringophilidae) is described from feather quills of Phalaropus fulicarius (Linnaeus) (Charadriiformes, Scolopacidae) from USA. Females of the new genus differs from those of the genus Bochkovia Skoracki et OConnor, by having the rounded posteriorly stylophore, edentate movable cheliceral digits, propodonotal setae arranged 2-1-1-2, thin and smooth dorsal setae of the idiosoma, smooth dorsal setae of legs I and II, and by the presence of setae vsI; males are distinguished by the presence of the propodonotal setae arranged 2-1-1-1-1. Additionally, two new syringophilid species recorded from aquatic birds in North America and three new host associations of these mites are recovered.
Calamicoptes anatidus sp. nov., a new species of rarely found parasitic mites of the family Laminosioptidae (Acari: Astigmata) is described from quill walls of wing covert feathers of Aythya marila Linnaeus (Anseriformes: Anatidae) captured in Poland. This is the first record of the family Laminosioptidae on birds of the order Anseriformes and the first record of this mite family in the fauna of Poland. Females of the new species are most similar to those of C. arenariae Lombert, Gaud et Lukoschus, 1984 and differ from them by the presence of the pygidial shield, which covers dorsal and ventro-lateral parts of the opisthosoma, and by having setae c2 and d2 short and subequal in length, and setae se and cp not reaching the metapodonotal shield.
Ectoparasites are common on birds and in their nests. Amongst these parasites are diverse gamasid mite species that can lead to irritation, disease transmission and blood loss. Few studies of the ectoparasites of birds breeding in the High Arctic exist. The parasitic mite, Dermanyssus hirundinis, was found in nests of snow buntings Plectrophenax nivalis nivalis, both natural nests and within nesting boxes, on Spitsbergen. Densities per nest varied from sporadic to greater than 26,000 individuals. This is the northernmost observation of this parasite. The mite was present in new nests, nests constructed the previous year and nests not utilized the previous summer. The parasite survives at least 18 months without access to a blood meal and can tolerate the Arctic winter, surviving temperatures below −20°C. D. hirundinis is hence well adapted to arctic conditions. Only females were observed suggesting that this population is facultatively parthenogenetic.
Varroa destructor is an external parasitic mite that attacks honey bees Apis cerana and Apis mellifera. Varroa mites can be controlled through commercially available miticides, as well as non-chemical means. Our research work has been conducted on plants extracts reducing the mite population. We have obtained promising results for extracts of yew and walnut.
The data on host-parasite associations between Hemiptera and terrestrial Parasitengona mites are summarized and supplemented with new records. The species names of parasitic mites are verified according to the most recent data. Altogether, representatives of 26 parasitengone genera are known to parasitize bugs. The systematics of the hemipteran hosts is provided in the form of appendix.
Four accipitriform bird species of the family Accipitridae are reported as new hosts for quill mites (Acari: Cheyletoidea: Syringophilidae): Megasyringophilus aquilus Skoracki, Lontkowski and Stawarczyk, 2010 was collected from Hieraaetus pennatus Gmelin, 1788 in France and Spain, and Buteo jamaicensis Gmelin, 1788 in Canada; Peristerophila accipitridicus Skoracki, Lontkowski and Stawarczyk, 2010 was collected from Circaetus gallicus Gmelin, 1788 in France, and Buteo lagopus Pontoppidan, 1763 in Germany.
Nine species belonging to six genera of syringophilid mites (Acari, Prostigmata) are recorded from 13 avian host species from Africa (Congo, Cameroun, Togo). Four new species are described and illustrated: Syringophilopsis garrulus sp. nov. from Garrulus glandarius (Corvidae), S. lagonostictus sp. nov. from Lagonosticta senegala and L. rufopicta (Passeridae), Peristerophila tympanistria sp. nov. from Turtur tympanistria (Columbidae) and Picobia poicephali sp. nov. from Poicephalus senegalus versteri (Psittacidae). Eight new host species of the family Syringophilidae are given.
