From a physiological point of view, pain in sport has an informative function, indicating the maximum load capacity of the body and especially of those areas which are usually exposed to maximum loads and, consequently, damage or injury. Pain in an athlete’s body usually has a specific cause, predictable duration, and proven methods of treatment. Pain is part of the sporting experience, irrespective of whether the discipline is a contact or a non-contact sport. Interest in the problems of pain in sport has been growing in recent years, as demonstrated by the host of scientific publications referred to in the paper, and in general the number of articles and studies available in thematic databases. The problem of pain in sport will become increasingly important, not least because of the increasingly higher load on athletes in all disciplines, as shown by the successive new world records. Also, the increasing number of amateur and recreational athletes will require appropriate studies. As this group is not sufficiently prepared for the effort, it is very susceptible to injury. Pain in sport can also be expected to continue to gain in importance considering the increasing number of active elderly people, especially in European countries. The article emphasizes that better knowledge of this area may have practical applications in the training process of athletes as well as persons who are physically active during their working life and after retirement. Furthermore, pain in sport may, due to advances in biological and medical sciences, give rise to new research areas. In this paper, the main trends of scientific problems and research concerning biological aspects of pain in sport are presented.
Patellofemoral pain syndrome occurs when there is a degeneration of the patellar cartilage between both bone surfaces of the femur and the patella. Its characteristic symptom is anterior knee pain that worsens when this joint is moved. The aim of the study was to determine the effectiveness of kinesio taping on patellofemoral pain syndrome through the analysis of published scientific studies up until June 2014. A literature search was carried out in the following electronic databases: Scopus, Sport Discus, PEDro, Cochrane Library Plus, Embase, Web of Science and Science Direct to locate studies that were relevant to this review. Out of 159 articles examined, after eliminating duplicates and upon completion of reading them, the review was finally reduced to 12 articles. After reviewing the literature regarding the effectiveness of kinesio taping on the improvement of knee pain, we concluded there is insufficient scientific evidence to support this theory. It is an inexpensive technique that can be combined with other therapies and has no side effects, but there is controversy in the analyzed studies on its possible benefits on the patellofemoral pain syndrome. For this reason, it is essential to carry out further methodologically sound research regarding the usefulness of kinesio taping in the treatment of this syndrome.

Evaluation of pain in athletes - selected methods

It is generally believed that athletes experience pain in a different way than normally active individuals. Many scientists have confirmed the hypothesis that long-term physical activity can alter the perception of pain, i.e. athletes have a higher pain sensation and pain tolerance thresholds. The measurement of pain intensity is carried out using subjective methods based on verbal and non-verbal information, describing the clinical characteristics of pain. These psychological methods include the use of scales and questionnaires. Objective methods (thermal, mechanical and electrical) are used only to determine the pain sensation and pain tolerance thresholds. The specificity and prevalence of chronic pain syndromes have resulted in the increased number of studies on healthy and physically active individuals. It seems that determination of the effects of exercise on the perception of pain might help in the understanding of mechanisms of pain generation.
Background: The aim of this research is to evaluate analgesic effectiveness of infrared radiation and interference currents in degenerative diseases of joints. On the grounds of current practical and theoretical experience, the following hypothesis was formed: Application of interference currents and infrared radiation constitutes effective analgesic therapy in degenerative diseases, and in the case of the applied treatment, its effectiveness is long-term. Material/Methods: Tests were conducted on a group consisting of 32 women and men in the age range of 65-87 years of age suffering from a degenerative disease of the knee joint. The patients were applied a series of 10 treatments with application of the Sollux lamp for 15 minutes and interference currents of 50-100 HZ frequency for 5 minutes and 90- 100 Hz for 10 minutes during treatment. Evaluation of the efficiency of therapy was checked by means of the VAS scale and the Laitinen scale. Results: The results indicate an efficient analgesic effect according to the VAS scale immediately after treatment p = 0.002 and a month after treatment p = 0.000 as well as according to the Laitinen scale immediately after treatment p = 0.004 and a month after treatment p = 0.004. Conclusions: Application of infrared radiation and interference currents indicates an analgesic effect. These treatments may be alternative or supportive to pharmacological treatment in the case of degenerative changes in people who are over 65 years of age. Results of the research suggest continuation of further research on the effectiveness of the above-mentioned therapy and the length of preserving analgesic results in people with degenerative diseases of joints.
Background. Chronic back pain is one of the most common causes of disability. It is a civilisation disease and up to 75% of women over the age of 55 suffer from it. The aim of this study was to assess the degree of disability and limitations in the daily functioning of women with lumbar spine pain depending on socio-demographic factors. Material and methods. The study included a group of 274 professionally active women aged between 50 and 64 who come from Biała Podlaska, Poland, and the surrounding areas and who completed the Oswestry Disability Index. The responses showed functional limitations of the respondents during performing specific activities due to back pain. The respondents were characterised with regard to their age, place of residence, education and material status. The results were analysed statistically. Results. The most numerous group included women with moderate disability – 41.6%. Lower back pain intensifies when sitting, standing, walking, lifting objects and applies mainly to women from the oldest age group, women having secondary and lower education, women from the city and those whose financial situation is below the average. Conclusions. A socio-demographic factor that differentiates the degree of the women’s disability in a significant way is their material status – the better the financial situation, the less severe the disability. Socio-demographic factors – such as age, education and material status – are strong determinants of functional limitations caused by back pain: women from the oldest age group (60-64 years old) had the biggest problem with walking; women with secondary or lower education experienced difficulty sitting and walking; women whose financial situation is below the average suffered much more difficulties while lifting objects, sitting and socialising.
Background. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of selected factors such as place of residence, education, age, duration of hospitalization and pain intensity before and after hip replacement surgery on the level of acceptance of the illness, on the subjective assessment of the patient’s state of health during surgery and on the level of pain and the ability to manage and reduce pain. Material and methods. The study included 181 patients diagnosed with hip joint degeneration and qualified for total hip replacement hospitalized in the Regional Specialist Hospital in Biała Podlaska, Poland. The study was conducted by means of a diagnostic survey with the use of a set of questionnaires: Acceptance of Illness Scale – AIS, WOMAC Scale, SF-36 Questionnaire, BPCQ Questionnaire. Results. More than half of the respondents (55.2%) were highly accepting of their condition. The level of acceptance was influenced by the place of residence, education, age, the intensity of pain after surgery and functional limitation. The overall assessment of the quality of life in the physical domain was – 62.9 points, with the worst scores for physical functioning and general health. Analysis with the WOMAC questionnaire showed that the majority of the subjects scored below 50 points on the functional limitation scale. All factors, except the level of pain before surgery, influenced the degree of functional limitation. Conclusions. Age, place of residence and education provided opportunities for pain control and the ability to reduce pain was perceived by those with longer hospital stays. Participants from cities had the highest quality of life. Education influenced the quality of life, which decreased with age and higher pain intensity. The better the quality of life, the higher the level of acceptance of illness, and vice versa.
This paper deals with the nature of a primary and secondary pain in domestic animals and reasons for its occurrence. The above-mentioned problem is very important, as pain, apart from causing animal suffering, can also bring about significant economic losses. Attempts to prevent and limit pain fulfill expectations of meat consumers from many countries, who are interested in humanitarian aspects of the relationship between people and animals. The clients are looking forward to obtain products from animals when they are convinced that a high level of welfare has been assured on each stage of their production.
 Infrared (IR)-A irradiation can be useful in back and musculoskeletal pain therapy. In this study joint and vertebral column pain and mobility were measured during two weeks of IR-A irradiation treatment of patients suffering from degenerative osteoarthritis of hip and knee, low back pain, or rheumatoid arthritis. Additionally, before and after IR-A treatment MDA serum levels were measured to check if MDA variations accompany changes in pain intensity and mobility. Two-hundred and seven patients were divided into verum groups getting IR-irradiation, placebo groups getting visible, but not IR irradiation, and groups getting no irradiation. In osteoarthritis significant pain reduction according to Visual Analogue Scale and mobility improvements occurred in the verum group. Even though beneficial mean value changes occurred in the placebo group, the improvements in the placebo and No Irradiation groups were without statistical significance. In low back pain, pain and mobility improvements (by 35-40 %) in the verum group were found, too. A delayed (2nd week) mobility improvement in rheumatoid arthritis was seen. However, pain relief was seen immediately. In patients suffering from low back pain or rheumatoid arthritis, the pain and mobility improvements were accompanied by significant changes of MDA serum levels. However, MDA appears not a sensitive biofactor for changes of the pain intensity in degenerative osteoarthritis. Nevertheless, unaffected or lowered MDA levels during intensive IR-A therapy argue against previous reports on free radical formation upon infrared. In conclusion, rapid beneficial effects of IR-A towards musculoskeletal pain and joint mobility loss were demonstrated.
It is generally accepted that classical opioids exert their antinociceptive effect mainly when binding to opioid receptors located in the central nervous system. However, a growing body of evidence points to the relevance of peripheral opioid receptors in periphery pathology, including cancer. A cancer is very often the cause of pain resulting from peripheral metastasis. The peripheral component of antinociception induced by a dimeric enkephalin analog – biphalin showing limited blood-brainbarrier permeability may prove important in cancer pain therapy. An additional advantage of biphalin is a possibility to treat pain symptoms with reduction of side-effects – a result of the central action of some other opioid analgesics, e.g. morphine. We examined the peripheral and central analgesic effect of biphalin in a murine skin cancer pain model developed by an intraplantar inoculation of B16T0 melanoma cells. Animals developed robust thermal hypersensitivity in the tumor-bearing paw compared to PBS-injected individuals. Biphalin produced stronger analgesia in the tumor-bearing paw than morphine upon a comparable central effect. Our results suggest that biphalin analgesia manifested in the periphery is linked to a less effective transport through the bloodbrain barrier. We speculate that the centrally effective dose of biphalin equipotent to morphine simultaneously produces analgesia via peripheral opioid receptors. Thus, biphalin may become useful in cancer pain treatment as an alternative drug executing a local as well as a central analgesic response with limited undesirable side-effects.

Castration in male pigs: techniques and animal welfare issues

Castration in male pigs is usually performed during the first weeks of life without prior anesthesia. This technique, however, is known to induce acute pain and stress and will therefore not be tolerated any longer by animal welfare organizations. Practical and animal-friendly alternatives to surgical castration are the production of entire male pigs, semen sexing or immunological castration. Fattening boars has the benefits of better feed efficiency, higher lean meat yield and increased animal welfare due to no pain and stress of castration. The most important disadvantage in raising entire male pigs is the incidence of boar taint ranging between 10 and 75%. To identify tainted carcasses an accurate and rapid on-line method for detection of odorous compounds is absolutely necessary. Sperm sexing through flow cytometry is the only commercially available method at the moment but speed of separation is too low for practical application. Active immunization of boars against gonadotropin-releasing-hormone (GnRH) at the end of the fattening period results in a significant reduction of testicular weight and androstenone production while the benefits of daily growth gain, meat quality as well as welfare remain the same as in entire males. In the present review more detailed information is given about the various techniques, especially the practical application of immunocastration on a large scale base.
