Attaching transmitters to fish is the most common procedure performed on free-ranging fish. Telemetry with either acoustic or high frequency radio transmitters is an essential tool for the study of fish behavior. This paper describes protocols for the efficient surgical implantation of telemetry transmitters in fish. Sturgeon were tagged with internal radio or acoustic transmitters (weight in air 0.6-12 g). This paper summarizes the knowledge and research results of transmitter impact on species taking into consideration morphology, the surgical procedure and transmitter attachment method, the tag mass to body mass ratio, and the expulsion of implanted tags.
The aim of the study was to compare the effects of rearing juvenile pikeperch in two types of tanks used widely in hatcheries; the tanks had either round (group O) or square (group K) bottoms. Two experiments were conducted. In experiment I, the mean initial body weight (m.c.) of the fish was 0.33 g, and in experiment II it was 1.76 g. The factor studied (tank shape) had a significant impact on the fish growth rates and feed conversion ratio (FCR) and protein efficiency ratio (PER). The results obtained in the two experiments differed. With the smaller pikeperch (experiment I) better results were obtained in group O, while with the larger fish (experiment II) better results were obtained in group K. No differences among groups in fish condition or stock survival were noted. The results indicate that smaller juvenile pikeperch (m.c. ≥ 0.3 g) should be reared in round-bottomed tanks, while larger fish (m.c. ≥ 2g) should be reared in square-bottomed tanks. Using the appropriate tanks for rearing particular size groups of pikeperch could potentially result in increased growth and more effective feed conversion ratios, thus shortening rearing times and lowering production costs.
The intensive feeding of young stages of fish with dry starter feeds under controlled conditions commonly results in body deformities. Most often these are caused by deficits of the dietary minerals necessary for skeletal development. The present article is a review of the literature data concerning this issue. The most important minerals for proper skeletal mineralization are phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium. Their role in the physiology of fish and the demand for them are presented for various fish species, and the effects of deficiency are described. The most important reasons for shortages of these minerals in fish are also discussed.
The aim of the study was to analyze the impact feeding has on the biometric characters of Crucian carp, Carassius carassius. Juvenile crucian carp were reared for 56 days in a recirculating aquaculture system (water temperature 24°C) and fed dried Chironomidae larvae (group O), commercial feed (group P), and a mix of these two feeds (group M). The type of feed has a significant impact on most of the biometric characters studied. Only the relative head size and head height were similar in all the feeding groups studied (P > 0.05). Discrimination analysis confirmed that the characters that most statistically significantly characterized the differences among the Crucian carp feeding groups studied were body height and tail stalk length.
