The percentage of thermoformed packaging in whole consumption of plastic packaging is around 9%, which means significantly lower comparing to the other segments of this industry. However, this kind of films is definitely important for the art of packaging, especially food packaging. This article in historical perspective describes films used in thermoformed packaging segment, firstly PVC film, secondly PS, OPS, PP, APET films and finally co-extruded films, including those with improved barrier properties. When determining the quantity of packaging consumption, there were identified following types: cups and boxes of PS, OPS, PP, APET film, f. f. s. packaging system (form fill seal, system of forming with simultaneous containers filling and closing by welding), thermoformed inserts for other types of packaging - mainly cardboards as a protection against individual products damage, PP boxes for solid fats, blister packs for pharmaceutical products, blister packs for technical products, PS foam trays (EPS). There were also conditions of PLA film and made from it thermoformed packaging production considered. The article indicates expected directions of further development of the analyzed segment of thermoformed packaging.
