The aim of the study was to trace the content and location of iron in three types of oligodendrocytes in the cortex frontalis of the brain of thirty-day old Wistar rats. The assessment was achieved in a LEO OMEGA 912 AB electron microscope, using the ESI spectroscope method of mapping iron (Electron Spectroscopic Imaging). Differentiated iron content in the three types of examined cells was indicated. The greatest accumulation of iron was found in dark oligodendrocytes, a smaller accumulation in medium oligodendrocytes and the smallest in light oligodendrocyts. The article discusses the dependency between cytoplasm density and iron content in investigated types of oligodendroglia.
