Metabolic activity of neutrophilic granulocytes of carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) aged from 2 months - 5 years determined by the Nitrotetrazolium blue reduction test (NBT) has been rendered as the percentage of NBT⁺ cells, NBT index and quantity of formazane (g/l). A decrease of the percentage of NBT⁺ cells from the 5th months and the NBT index from the 10 month of the carps lives was discovered. The highest percentage of the NBT⁺ cells and NBT index was found in carps 2 months old, the lowest in the carps at the age of 5 years and 25 months, respectively. Sex did not affect these parameters. Age and sex of the carp did not affect the quantity of formazane in the blood.
In accordance with the lack of immunological studies concerning hares infected with EBHS virus, the aim of this study was to observe the dynamics of chosen indices of non-specific immunity altered with cidal capacity of PMN cells and the amount of lyzosyme in rabbits infected with EBHS virus. The studies were conducted to show replication of EBHS virus in the immune system in rabbits. The results of the studies in these animals have shown that EBHS virus replicates in rabbit’s cells, proving the brake through of the species barrier in rabbits, which during the course of this infection causes the activation of leucocytes resulting in an increased amount of LZM in serum.
The aim of this study was to assess the course of some parameters of non-specific immunity during the estrus cycle in bitches. Blood samples were collected from 28 healthy bitches at different stages (anestrus, proestrus, estrus, metestrus) of the estrus cycle. Nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction by blood neutrophils, phagocytic activity of neutrophils, proliferative response of blood lymphocytes to phytohemagglutynin, serum activity of lysozyme and ceruloplasmin, level of total protein and γ-globulin fraction were determined. The study showed that nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction by blood neutrophils, proliferative response of blood lymphocytes to phytohemagglutynin, serum activity of lysozyme and ceruloplasmin were significantly higher (p ≤ 0.01) in proestrus and estrus than in anestrus.
Dynamic and activity of myeloperoxidase and serum lysozyme, globulins, total protein in the polar blue foxes infected naturaly with the distemper virus (CDV) was examined. The two step examinations were done. In the first step the value and activity of the above mentioned parameters of unspecific humoral immunity was registered twice in 24 sick and 22 healthy foxes during sickness and just before death. In the second step the examinations were performed on 10 healthy and 12 sick foxes at the day 1, 4, 7, 10 and 13 of the disease e. g. from the appearance of the first clinical signs up to the death of the examined animals. Clinical observations, anatomopathological and virological (direct immunofluorescence test using a conjugate prepared by the Biowet Nitra, Czechoslovakia) tests were performed simultaneously with immunological tests. A complex evaluation of breeding system on 5 farms at the first step and on 3 farms at the second step of studies was also done. It was found that the natural infection of foxes with CDV increases the activity of myeloperoxidase and blood serum lysozyme and decreases the level of serum globulins.
A review of the literature concerning recent investigations on the phagocytosis is presented, special attention being paid to the role of macrophages and granulocytes as effector cells in infection caused by some protozoans and helminths.
The aim of the study was to determine the immunological state of bitches suffering from pyometra. The study was performed on 87 bitches with open pyometra, 13 bitches with closed pyometra and 17 healthy control bitches. All bitches with pyometra were treated by ovario-hysterectomy. Prior to surgery, blood samples were collected from them to determine: w.b.c., r.b.c., Hb, Ht, differential w.b.c. A NBT reduction test and phagocytic index was also performed on the blood. In addition, the lysozyme activity, total protein level and globulin fraction were evaluated in the serum. C-reactive protein (CRP) was determined in 40 of the bitches. Uterus aspirates were collected from 68 bitches with open pyometra and 13 with closed pyometra for bacteriological examination. The study demonstrated that all immunological parameters in bitches with pyometra were lower compared to those of the control group. Only the CRP level was very high. In bitches with open pyometra the following aerobes were isolated: E. coli (78%), streptococci (13%), staphylococci (6%) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (3%). No aerobes were isolated in bitches with closed pyometra.
