Serological studies were carried out using two kinds of antigens i.e. BLV and BLV plus parainfluenza virus (PI3) propagated in FLK cells. Out of 38 cattle sera sixteen (42.2 per cent) produced positive results with the BLV antigen and 31 (81.6 per cent) with the mixed antigen. The findings showed that with the mixed antigen the positive results rose by 39.4.
Milk production was assessed in 145 cows coming from two farms designated as N and TG. By means of ELISA test it was found that 52 cows were infected with BLV and 37 were uninfected at the N farm, while at the TG farm 27 cows were seropositive and 29 seronegative when evaluated by the AGID test. It was determined on the N farm milk production was 10,7 1 per day in leukemic cows and 11,9 in control cows. The average yield of milk was 1,17 1 lower than that in control cows. The mean percentage of fat was 3,158 in leukemic cows and 3,418 in aleukemic cattle. At the TG farm the findings were different; the mean milk production from infected cows was 10,06 1 while from non-infected it was 9,78 1. Milk production in one lactation period was 10,8% lower in infected cows of the N farm than that in the control group. This kind of relation, however was not found at the TG farm.
Foetal lamb cells cocultivated with leukocytes of leukaemic cattle were passaged in monolayer from 2 to 35 passages. The degeneration signs in the cytoplasm and nucleus of the cells were observed following this cycle of multiplication. Generally, 43 passages of these cultures were conducted. The presence of the bovine leukaemia virus (BLV) in selected passages of these cells was confirmed by the syncytial test, PCR reaction and by electron microscopy. The presence of the virus structural proteins in the supernatant of the cell culture was confirmed by an agar gel immunodiffision test and by the immunoblot method.
