The goal of this paper is to assess any possible relationships between the types of behaviors and coping strategies with occupational stress among nurses. Workplace has an important position in the life of a contemporary person. It can be a source of great satisfaction and positive experiences or it can be a source of frustration and negative influence on ones health. Sample: The sample consisted of 242 nurses from various hospitals in Bydgoszcz. Method: The research was conducted by the means of two questionnaires: first, AVEM - Questionnaire, which describes four types of behaviors and second, Latack's Coping Scale - which describes five coping factors with occupational stress. The analysis of the results indicates that the types of behavior in the workplace influence the strategies of coping with occupational stress.

Holism in health care in unconscious patients

100%
Nowadays nursing focuses the care on the whole person with his instantaneous and potential health problems. The main role in the care of patients has a nurse, who perceives a patient as a unique, holistic being and not only merely his parts. She is increasingly interested in the link of physical, mental, social and spiritual needs. It is in the most important for the patient's health, well- being and his survival to apply the new dimension of a holistic approach in nursing, which means the quality of patient's life. One of the groups of patients hospitalized in intensive care units creates the patients who are unconscious, they have various injuries of many vital body systems and some of them can have irreversible damages as well. The aim of their treatment is the minimum of harm to the body and then, if possible, patient return to optimal functioning in the society. The right choice of methods for systematic and comprehensive approach is essential to provide holistic nursing care.
Background. Medical professionals frequently experience low back pain as a result of mechanical overload caused by prolonged standing, performing activities in a position of trunk flexion, extended work hours and physically stressful duties. The above-mentioned stresses, when they exceed the adaptive capacity of the tissues, can lead to pain, degenerative changes and even disability. Material and methods. 114 employees, including 48 (42%) physicians and 66 (58%) nurses, were examined. Their average age was 42.08±9.43 years, and the average years of work experience was 17.16±10.36 years. To assess the occurrence of low back pain, a standardized Oswestry Questionnaire was used, while for assessments of ergonomics an original questionnaire was used. Results. 95 respondents (83.33%), including 31 physicians (64.58%) and 64 nurses (96.96%), did not apply the principles of ergonomics in the work environment. The most common reasons were that working conditions were not conducive to ergonomic approaches to their duties and that there were not enough medical personnel to make ergonomic choices possible. All subjects experienced back pain. The Oswestry Questionnaire was used to determine the degree of disability caused by back pain. Among the physicians, the majority of respondents (n=35, 73%) experienced a small degree of disability, while the nurses experienced a moderate amount of disability (n= 35, 53%). Conclusions. Most of the examined personnel did not apply principles of ergonomics and had incomplete knowledge in this area. All subjects were burdened with low back pain, one of every ten of them were seriously affected. The results indicate the need to provide ergonomics education to medical personnel.
Background. The proper nutrition in diabetes is one of the crucial elements of therapy, but in practice, diet of diabetic individuals is commonly improperly balanced, that is associated with lack of nutritional knowledge. The nurses are also often characterized by insufficient knowledge about diabetes diet therapy and poor nutritional behaviors. Objective. The aim of the study was to analyze of the declared nutritional behaviors in a group of diabetology nurses and to compare it with declared nutritional behaviors of the control group. Material and Methods. The group of 52 nurses recruited from all the regions of Poland working with diabetic patients was analysed and compared with control group of 63 individuals – random non-diabetic patients from all the regions of Poland. They were asked about accomplishing practical recommended nutritional goals for adults in Poland and were able to indicate if they follow detailed recommended nutritional goals “always” (3 points), “sometimes” (1 point) or “never” (0 points). Results. The diabetology nurses rarely declared fish and legumes intake (never or sometimes accomplishing goal: 87%), milk and dairy products intake (75%), as well as moderate sugar and sweets intake (69%). Nurses significantly rarer than control group declared regularity of meals (p=0.0000) and diversion of meals (p=0.0000). The lack of correlation between number of years of working with diabetic individuals and number of obtained points during assessment of nutritional behaviors was observed. Conclusions. The nutritional behaviors of diabetology nurses are not good, even if they educate diabetic patients on daily basis. Nutritional education should be conducted not only in groups of diabetic patients, but also, in groups of diabetology nurses.
Artykuł przedstawia wyniki badań ankietowych przeprowadzonych wśród pracowników służby zdrowia (lekarzy i pielęgniarek środowiskowo-rodzinnych). Badano opinię pracowników służby zdrowia o źródłach materiałów edukacyjnych o zdrowiu, potrzebach w zakresie tematów i form oraz zainteresowania pacjentów tymi materiałami.
