In this paper we present the results of studies on the influence of an initial substrate concentration (NO3-, sodium lactate) on the kinetics of denitrification. We have found that the optimum rates of the process are obtained at 37°C for the nutrient medium containing sodium lactate at a concentration of 2.52 g/dm3, and nitrate nitrogen 1,4 g/dm3.

Levels of nitrates and nitrites were observed in pooled samples of milk from selected suppliers of the Košice dairy, and in dairy treated milk during certain months of the year. The average value of nitrates in examined (432) pooled samples of milk ranged from 1.84 to 4.58 mg of NaNO₃.1⁻¹, and in dairy-treated milk (72 samples), from 2.33 to 6.23 mg of NaNO₃.1⁻¹. In the both cases maximal values of nitrates were observed in April, and minimal values in January. With the exception of one pooled sample, all the examined milk samples complied with the Slovak Codex Alimentarius, where the highest values of nitrates and nitrites in some of the final products are fixed. The average value of nitrites in the examined samples of milk taken during the investigated period, amounted to 0.07 mg of NaNO₂.1⁻¹.
The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of sodium fluoride (NaF) and nitrate (NO₃⁻) either administered orally alone or in a combination, on the biochemical parameters of rats. Tests on general toxicity were conducted on the basis of methodical recommendations 408 of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Guideline for Testing of Chemicals: "Subchronic Oral Toxicity - Rodent: 90-d Study".The following combined effects of the tested chemicals were predominantly observed: additive, synergistic, and antagonistic. Methaemoglobinaemia was noted in groups given NO₃⁻ or NaF + NO₃⁻ complex.
Tomato plants were cultivated (from 2 to 23 days after germination) in media with NO3-, NH+, or a mixture of both forms in different proportions used as the N source given with or without 5 mol dm-3 HCO3-. The accumulation of soluble sugars (reductng sugars and sucrose) and free amino acids was higher in the roots and leaves of NH+-fed plants than in NO3--fed plants. Starch accumulation in NH4+-fed plants was higher in leaves (about 28 %) and lower in roots (about 37 %) in comparison with that of NO3-- fed plants. Plants cultivated in media containing a mixture of NO3-/NH4+ were characterized by a lower content of sugars and amino acids accumulation in comparison with that in plants fed with NO3- or NH4+. An elevated HCO3- concentration in the rhizosphere stimulated the accumulation of soluble sugars and free amino acids in all the experimental variants. There were only small differences in the starch content.
The changes of redox potential, pH, nitrate (V) concentration and N2O emission from high and low peat soils having been subjected to flooding were studied. Peat samples were taken from the Łęczyńsko-Włodawskie Lake District and incubated in a water-saturated state, under laboratory conditions, in the dark, at room temperature, for 55 days. Each week, the redox potential (Eh), and NO3- concentrations of the solutions collected and N2O content in gaseous phases were measured. The variations in the NO3- concentration in low peat soil were correlated with changes in the amount of nitrous oxide produced, indicating denitrification. The maximal N2O emission (15 mg N2O-N m-2d-1) from the low peat soil was measured at the beginning of the incubation.
