To identify factors that influence the decision to evacuate upon flood warning by authorities, a study was conducted in a flood prone area in the province of Bukidnon in the Philippines. A survey of flood victims was conducted in Batangan Village, Valencia City, Bukidnon, Philippines wherein 150 respondents were interviewed. Logistic regression analysis was done to test the socio demographic factors that could influence a family’s decision to either evacuate or stay upon advice by government authorities. College education, presence of children in the home, poverty, and extent of flood experienced were found to significantly influence the decision of the family to evacuate. Based on this information, the study provides recommendations for disaster managers in case of future flood incidence in the area.
The water content of the rivers is formed by atmospheric precipitation and underground waters. Influence of underground waters on water content of the rivers cannot be measured. It is shown that the volume of underground water exchange is underestimated and can be commensurable with a volume of atmospheric precipitation. Change of level of underground waters is defined by changes of volume of the geological environment during geodeformations. It is offered to consider geodeformations as one of the reasons of floods and droughts. Studied the changes the gravitational field and geodeformations during droughts and floods in the Amazon in 2005-2006. Studied the hydrological regime of the River Nile. Shows the influence of geodeformation on the level of Danube and Dniester. Proposed detailed study the causes of floods in Europe in 2002. Influence of the Earth’s surface deformation on floods and droughts is very important and requires special detailed study. Changes in volume of rocks during Earth’s surface deformation are accompanied by dilatancy which influence on the amount of drought and flooding has turned out to be significant. Study of the processes considered in the thesis gives grounds to expect that floods and droughts associated with deformations of the geological environment will be successfully predicted.
Torrential floods are the most destructive and most frequent natural disasters in Serbia with severe social, economic, cultural, and environmental consequences that deserve special attention. This paper presents a datacollection strategy and data analysis in terms of spatial and temporal characterization of the torrential flood phenomenon in Serbia for the last 99 years. Based on the available information obtained from various reliable sources, we registered 848 torrential flood events for 1915-2013. The registered number of deaths from torrential floods is over 133, including 24 people from 1991 to 2010. Monthly distribution of registered torrential floods indicates that the majority of floods occurred in Serbian territory in late spring (from May to the end of June) and the greatest number of torrential floods is registered in Southern Morava basin. This work resulted in creating a first inventory of torrential floods in Serbia and its analysis for the purpose of the spatial and temporal distribution and characterization of this phenomenon. The inventory on torrential floods will be integrated in future in a unique multi-user database on natural hazards in Serbia, and it should become a part of the European database of natural hazards.
Natural and unnatural catastrophes create hazards and cause increasing damage not only to property, but also claim more and more lives. The cause of this state of affairs can be found firstly in climate changes1) and secondly in the economic development of countries exposed to these risks (the increase in the infrastructure value and in the number of inhabitants in these areas). The subject of catastrophes, including ecological disasters and their outcomes, raises more and more voices calling for the introduction of systemic solutions whose effect will be to minimise the financial effects of these catastrophes. One such element is insurance instruments [1-6]. This article is a continuation of research conducted in the EU states and in southeastern Poland with respect to the awareness of insurance coverage among people living in individual households as a method for reducing these risks.
The paper presents the role of military involvement in different types of humanitarian operation, advantages, disadvantages and different opinions about military participation in such mission. It also presents a general characteristic of humanitarian operations, civil - military cooperation.
