The aim of this study was to assessed the differences in embryos quality between the natural estrus and two systems of estrus synchronization in multiparous sows and prepuberal gilts. In this experiment, multiparous sows (n = 63) and prepuberal gilts (n = 42) were used. The subgroups of these animals were treated with PMSG (1500 U.I.) + hCG (500 U.I.) or PG-600 synchronization systems. These animals were inseminated twice, 24 and 36 h after hCG injection. The control gilts (n = 20) were from the third subgroup and were inseminated two times at 12 h intervals during their natural estrus cycles. A statistically significant increased number of corpora lutea (CL) and embryos was observed between natural estrus and both synchronization systems in multiparous sows (p < 0.001). There were no differences found in the number of degenerative embryos isolated from both ovaries between PMSG + hCG, PG-600, and natural estrus groups in multiparous sows (p = 0.484), (p = 0.279), (p = 0.213), (p = 0.138), respectively. However, an increased number of unfertilized oocytes in multiparous sows after treatment with PMSG + hCG as compared to control animals (p = 0.041) was observed. A statistically higher number of embryos after treatment with PMSG + hCG was also observed in the separate groups of multiparous sows and prepuberal gilts as compared to PG-600 treated animals. No differences were found, however, in the number of degenerative embryos between those two separate groups of animals after treatment with PMSG + hCG and PG-600 of both ovaries: (p = 0.175), (p = 0.344), (p = 0.122), and (p = 0.055), respectively. It can be suggested that the differences in the number of embryos isolated from both ovaries after these two treatments systems in prepuberal gilts and multiparous sows may be a result of age-dependent different response to gonadotropins and the reproductive competence of these females.
The experiments were carried out to estimate the possibilities of stimulation of the fecundity of sows by administering Vitamin A, ß-carotene and folic acid as basic feed supplement. It has been expected that the synthetic ß-carotene and Vitamin A will increase inhibits embryo mortality. In the first experiment animals were primiparous and in the second multiparous sows. All animals were slaughtered on 30th day of gestation. The reproductive tracts were recovered and dead, partially resorbed and viable embryos were counted. Also weight of ovaries and number of corpora lutea evaluated and on this basis were estimated ovulation rate. In the blood samples concentration of folates, A1AT and AspAT activity, Ca, P and urea quantity were estimated. Addition 5 mg/kg folic acid to basal diet for primiparous sows decrease number of dead fetuses and simultaneously administering 200 mg ß-carotene/animal/day significantly increase number of presumably living fetuses (from 8.3 to 10.8). Addition 60000 IU of Vitamin A haven't had significant influence for the number of dead or living fetuses, while increased level of it was noted in liver. Under the synthetic ß-carotene treatment multiparous sows, the higher number of viable fetuses, number of corpora lutea and weight of ovaries than in the control group were also observed. Extra addition of folic acid decreases significantly (P < 0.05) number of dead fetuses. Similar effects are obtained by replacing ß-carotene+folic acid with Vitamin A+folic acid for multiparous sows. The obtained result indicates that the addition of the synthetic ß-carotene to the diet for sows before and after mating increases ovulation rate. The simultaneous folic acid supplement from the time of mating inhibits embryo mortality.
Effect of dietary arginine supplementation on body weight changes and productivity of sows. The objective of this study was to determine whether provision of additional arginine to pregnant and lactating sows could influence body weight changes in females during reproductive cycle as well as reproductive and rearing performance of the piglets. The study included 36 F1 crossbred sows (Polish Landrace ´Polish Large White), including 12 primiparous and 24 multiparous sows, which after insemination were randomly allocated to experimental group E (6 primiparous – P and 12 multiparous – M) and control group C (6 P and 12 M). Sows from both groups received complete diets, which were fed to meet requirements. Sows from group E were supplemented with amino acid (L-arginine 98%) at 0.3 kg/ton for pregnant sows (from 4 weeks after insemination) and at 0.5 kg/ton for lactating sows. C sows were not supplemented. Feeding group (C, E) had a significant effect on sow body weight at weaning (P ≤0.01), while lactation (P, M) had a significant effect on sow body weight at mating and weaning, and also on body weight change during the weaning-to-mating period (P ≤0.01). The number of piglets born to primiparous sows from group E vs C was higher by 1.3 piglets (11.11%) (P >0.05). 28-day-old weaned piglets, reared by primiparous sows, were significantly heavier than the progeny of multiparous sows (P ≤0.01), by 0.76 kg/animal (10.08%) in group C and by 0.97 kg/animal (12.63%) in group E. Piglets from group E vs C were heavier at weaning by 0.35 kg (4.22%) when born to primiparous sows, and by 0.14 kg (1.86%) when born to multiparous sows. No group ´lactation interaction has been shown for any of the parameters studied. It seems appropriate to supplement pregnant and nursing primiparous sows with dietary arginine.
