Background. In recent years, changes to adolescent life style and nutrition are becoming increasingly apparent. One of the ways in which this can be observed, is in an unbalanced daily intake of dietary minerals, where some intakes are in excess whilst others are deficient. Normal growth and development can thereby become adversely affected. Objective. To determine daily dietary intake levels of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, iron, zinc and copper together from their various foodstuff sources in the daily diet of a defined group of adolescents. Material and methods. Subjects were adolescents aged 16-19 years attending the technical college at the Polish town of Kamień Pomorski; being under the jurisdiction of the Western Pomeranian Province (voivodship). The study tool was a survey of food that had been consumed within the last 24 hours, from which the amounts of mineral elements in any given menu, so chosen, could thus be estimated. Results. Average daily potassium intakes were found to be generally low; less than 2350 mg and 1800 mg respectively for girls and boys compared to recommended values. This was coupled with high sodium intakes, where respectively, girls and boys exceeded recommended values by 2.1 and 2.8 times. Excess intakes of phosphorus, iron and copper were also observed in boys; respectively 500 mg, 4 mg and 2 mg. Some subjects showed insufficient intakes of calcium and magnesium i.e. 63%-80% below EAR (Estimated Average Requirements). The main source of calcium was found to be ripe cheeses, milk and fermented beverages. In both groups the main dietary sources of magnesium, sodium, iron and copper were bread. Girls diets showed that phosphorus and zinc mostly came from eating ripe cheeses and poultry, whereas potatoes were the main source of potassium. The boy’s daily dietary intakes demonstrated that phosphorus and zinc originated from eating bread and potatoes. Significantly lower amounts of phosphorus, sodium, iron and zinc were however consumed by girls compared to boys. Conclusions. The mineral content of the subjects’ daily diet was found to be substantially unbalanced.
In cattle, the prevention of diseases might be possible using dietary methods, with nutritional optimization of feed rations. For years significant influence has been associated with the addition of biotin, methionine and zinc (each given individually, or as chelate – Zn-methionine). The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of biotin or biotin + Zn-methionine additives on the health and performance of cows, in the first and second trimester of lactation. This study was carried out in 3 groups of cows, 30 animals in each group. In the first group cows were fed the usual fodder used on the farm. In the second group biotin at 10 mg/day/cow was added. In the third group both biotin at 10 mg/day/cow and Zn-methionine at 5 g/day/cow were added. The administration of biotin increased the milk yield and reduced the occurrence of retained placenta, as well as endometritis puerperalis. However, the high doses of biotin suppressed ovulation and oestrus symptoms in the investigated cows (low progesterone levels on days 15, 21 and 45 after calving). Zn-methionine in comparison to biotin had a lower effect on the milk yield in the cows. Moreover, its supplementation improved the milk content, as well as some of the blood parameters; it also decreased the number of somatic cells in milk. The concurrent administration of biotin and zinc-methionine seemed to be a good method for the prophylaxis of subacute mastitis and for the improvement of the high yielding dairy cows’ productivity.
The amount of water stored in forest soils was estimated on the basis of 358 experimental trials with 18 monoliths taken from forest soils. Rainfall was simulated in two cycles of different length of break between rainfall events. The results showed, that the amount of water stored in forest soils was influenced both by the initial moisture content in samples and by the length of time between consecutive rainfall events (duration of drying). The ascertained differences in the amount of water stored in a sample amounted from 30% to 200% and were larger in case of longer breaks between consecutive rainfalls. The results can be explained by the differences in duration of water absorption by the particles of organic matter. The results indicated also, that the maximum amounts of water stored after a single rainfall event in organic layers of forest soils is larger than the maximum amount stored in the organic layer of a meadow soil of similar depth.
The regression formulas indicate a significant relationship between the initial moisture content and the density of soils with different content of organic matter. Differences in soil density can also explain the variability in the amount of water stored after a single rainfall episode Statistical tests indicated, that soil density explains 77% of the variability in the optimal initial moisture content and 69% of the variability of the largest increases in the amount of water stored in the sample. For the experiments with longer breaks between two consecutive rainfall episodes the error of estimation was smaller than for experiments with shorter breaks: this suggest, that the time of absorption of water by the organic matter in forest soils is also an important factor.
