In an experiment with controlled freezing, strawberry plants were exposed to 0, −8, −12, −16 and −20°C at a freeze and thaw rate of 2 °C/hour in March/April 1996. Crowns from the cultivar ‘Korona’ were examined using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), showing a gradual increase of signal intensity from the centre of the crowns, as a result of the temperature drop, which might be caused by lipids. The increase in signal intensity was in accordance with the tissue browning of crowns, which increased substantially when the temperature dropped below −12 °C. A similar reaction was shown in a field experiment comparing wintercovered and not wintercovered strawberry plants. The plants which had been exposed to temperatures between −10 and −16 °C were severely injured. This demonstrates that MRI has a potential as an objective method to determine freeze injury in the field, by «calibrating» the MRI instrument to freezing profiles in controlled experiments.
Background: Frontal sinuses are 2 irregular cavities, placed between 2 lamina of frontal bone. Expansion continues during childhood and reaches full size after puberty. Persistent metopic suture is one of the factors that are related to abnormal frontal sinus development. In this study, we want to discuss about the coexistence of persistent metopic suture and abnormal frontal sinus development using radiological techniques. Materials and methods: In this retrospectively planned study, images of 631 patients were examined, 217 (34.4%) of them were men and 414 (65.6%) of them were women. Brain computed tomography and magnetic resonance images were retrieved from the electronic archive for analysis. Results: In this study, frontal sinus development is categorised as right side atrophy, left side atrophy, bilateral atrophy and bilaterally developed sinuses. The presence of metopic suture was accepted as persistent metopic suture. Frontal sinus atrophy was found in 22.7% and persistent metopic sutures were found in 9.7% of overall. Conclusions: In this study, no significant results were detected that were related to the frontal sinus agenesis or dismorphism associated with persistent metopic suture. We conclude that, although publications propounding metopism that leads to abnormal frontal sinus development are present in the literature, no reasonable explanation has been mentioned in these articles; and we believe that these findings are all incidental. Magnetic resonance imaging is the method of choice for examination of the inner ear and acoustic tract. In order to obtain detailed visualization of all structures the scans have to be made in three planes: axial, coronal, and sagittal.
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the usefulness of magnetic resonance (MR) in imaging of the cisternal and petroclival segments of the abducent nerve. Heavily T2-weighted submillimetric 3D sequence in axial plane, T1-weighted 3D, 1.5 mm slice thickness sequence in axial plane and TOF sequence were performed on 16 volunteers. Additionally the reformatted T2-weighted images in sagittal and in oblique parasagittal plane parallel to the abducent nerve in the pontine cistern were performed. The heavily T2-weighted sequence provides high contrast between fluid and other structures. High signal intensity of the cerebrospinal fluid is a kind of background for cranial nerves, vessels, meninges as well as for bony and fibrous structures. The authors identified the abducent nerve in at least one plane of the submillimetric, heavily T2-weighted sequences in 84.4% cases (in 84.4% in axial plane, 68.8% in sagittal and 84.4% parasagittal parallel to the VI-th cranial nerve in the pontine cistern). Dorello’s canal was identified in 27/32 abducent nerves (84.4%) on the submillimetric, heavily T2-weighted sequence in parasagittal parallel to the abducent nerve in the pontine cistern plane. In 71.9% (23/32) of cases, the abducent nerve was in contact with the arterial vessel in pontine cistern.
We report the case of a 52-year-old man in whom multiple conglomerated ring-enhanced lesions in the left frontal lobe were revealed on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); further, he presented with headache. Subtotal resection of the mass was performed and the histopathological diagnosis of gemistocytic astrocytoma was made. He received postoperative radiotherapy of remnant mass. Six months post-surgery, new multiple lesions were developed on the left cerebellum and the lesion yielded radiological findings that were quite similar to those of the lesion previously observed in the left frontal lobe. Total resection was performed with the aid of neuronavigation and a live yellow 10-cm-long worm with an active scolex was found. A pathologist identified the worm as a sparganum of Spirometra mansoni. This suggests that the live worm may have moved to the ipsilateral cerebellum due to the stimulus from the surgery and radiation on the frontal lobe. Although this case presented characteristic MRI findings of sparganosis, we did not conduct a serological test; therefore, we misdiagnosed sparganosis as gemistocytic astrocytoma. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the ipsilateral transtentorial migration of cerebral sparganosis.
Introduction. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common malignant epithelial tumour of the kidney, accounting for 85–90% of all solid renal tumours in adults and comprising 1–3% of all malignant visceral neoplasms. Recently, computed tomography (CT) has been considered the ‘gold standard’ in the diagnostic imaging of RCC; however, the use of CT is always associated with radiation exposure and consequently carries a significant increase in the risk of malignancy for patients with neoplastic processes. In recent years, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is increasingly attracting the attention of clinicians as the method of choice for the diagnosis and staging of RCC, due to several advantages over CT. Materials and method. The study involved 62 adult patients with a pathologically verified clear cell subtype of the renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) and 15 healthy volunteers. All patients underwent renal MRI which included diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with subsequent apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) measurement. Results. A significant difference was observed in the mean ADC value of the normal renal parenchyma and ccRCC – 1.82 ± 0.16 × 10– 3 mm2/s vs 2.15 ± 0.12 × 10– 3 mm2/s, respectively (р < 0,05). Additionally, statistically reliable differences in ADC values in patients with high and low ccRCC grades were obtained: in patients with the I grade, the mean ADC value was 1.92 ± 0.12 × 10– 3 mm2/s, in patients with the II grade, this value was 1.84 ± 0.14 × 10– 3 mm2/s, in patients with the III grade, the mean ADC value was 1.79 ± 0.12 × 10– 3 mm2/s, and in patients with the IV grade of nuclear polymorphism the mean ADC value was 1.72 ± 0.11 × 10– 3 mm2/s (p <0.05). Conclusions. The data obtained in the survey show a significant restriction in the diffusion of hydrogen molecules in tissues of ccRCC, compared to the healthy renal parenchyma due to the tumour’s greater density. A statistically significant difference was observed in the mean ADC values of ccRCC tumours with different Fuhrman nuclear grades: tumours with a low grade of differentiation demonstrated higher mean ADC values compared to highly differentiated tumours. Application of DWI modality of MR imaging with ADC calculation allows to obtain valuable information that is vital for the diagnosis of ccRCC and differentiation of its degree of malignancy.
A total of 14 patients of various ages diagnosed with schizophrenia and, as an age-matched control group, 12 healthy subjects were examined using the MRI method of neuro-imaging. The volume of the following structures was evaluated in the right and left hemispheres: the superior temporal gyrus, the basolateral temporal area (the region including the middle temporal gyrus, inferior temporal gyrus and fusiform gyrus), the parahippocampal gyrus, the hippocampal head, the amygdaloid body and the inferior horn of the lateral ventricle. In schizophrenia a significant increase in the volume of the amygdaloid body on both the left and right sides was observed. In the patients, as in the control group, we noticed significant asymmetry between the left and right sides in the volume of the structures studied. The left amygdaloid body was significantly larger than the right, whereas the left hippocampal head and the temporal horn of the lateral ventricle were smaller than the right. Our findings suggest that in the early stages of schizophrenia, despite the increased volume of the amygdaloid body, the asymmetry between the structures of the temporal lobe is still present. However, the changes observed in the temporal lobe could be related to the functional disturbances observed in this disease.
The emerging fields of tissue engineering and biomaterials have begun to provide potential treatment options for liver failure. The goal of the present study is to investigate the ability of a poly L-lactic acid (PLLA) nanofiber scaffold to support and enhance hepatic differentiation of human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). A scaffold composed of poly L-lactic acid and collagen was fabricated by the electrospinning technique. After characterizing isolated hMSCs, they were seeded onto PLLA nanofiber scaffolds and induced to differentiate into a hepatocyte lineage. The mRNA levels and protein expression of several important hepatic genes were determined using RT-PCR, immunocytochemistry and ELISA. Flow cytometry revealed that the isolated bone marrow-derived stem cells were positive for hMSC-specific markers CD73, CD44, CD105 and CD166 and negative for hematopoietic markers CD34 and CD45. The differentiation of these stem cells into adipocytes and osteoblasts demonstrated their multipotency. Scanning electron microscopy showed adherence of cells in the nanofiber scaffold during differentiation towards hepatocytes. Our results showed that expression levels of liver-specific markers such as albumin, α-fetoprotein, and cytokeratins 8 and 18 were higher in differentiated cells on the nanofibers than when cultured on plates. Importantly, liver functioning serum proteins, albumin and α-1 antitrypsin were secreted into the culture medium at higher levels by the differentiated cells on the nanofibers than on the plates, demonstrating that our nanofibrous scaffolds promoted and enhanced hepatic differentiation under our culture conditions. Our results show that the engineered PLLA nanofibrous scaffold is a conducive matrix for the differentiation of MSCs into functional hepatocyte-like cells. This represents the first step for the use of this nanofibrous scaffold for culture and differentiation of stem cells that may be employed for tissue engineering and cell-based therapy applications.
Chronic isoproterenol administration produces a rapid, highly reproducible rodent model of cardiac hypertrophy. Yet, despite widespread use of this model, the effects of isoproterenol on in vivo cardiac function and substrate metabolism are unknown. Isoproterenol (5 mg.kg-1.day-1) was infused for 7 days in male Wistar rats (n = 22). In vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed that left ventricular mass increased by 37% and end-diastolic and systolic volumes increased by 33% and 73%, respectively, following isoproterenol infusion. Cardiac function at the base of the left ventricle was normal, but apical ejection fraction decreased from 90% to 31% and apical free wall thickening decreased by 94%, accompanied by increased fibrosis and inflammation. Myocardial palmitate oxidation rates were 25% lower, and citrate synthase and medium chain acyl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase activities were reduced by 25% and 29%, respectively, following isoproterenol infusion. Fatty acid transporter protein levels were 11-52% lower and triglyceride concentrations were 55% lower in isoproterenol-infused rat hearts. Basal glycolysis and glycogen concentration were not changed, yet insulin stimulated glycolysis was decreased by 32%, accompanied by 33% lower insulin stimulated glucose transporter, GLUT4, protein levels in rat hearts following isoproterenol infusion, compared with controls. In conclusion, isoproterenol infusion impaired in vivo cardiac function, induced hypertrophy, and decreased both fatty acid and glucose metabolism, changes similar in direction and magnitude to those found in the rat heart following moderate severity myocardial infarction.
The summary describes a clinical case of a four-year-old American Quarter Horse gelding presented for evaluation of a grade 2-3 (2-3/5) lameness of the right hind limb. The patient underwent a thorough clinical and orthopaedic examination including limb flexion tests and diagnostic anaesthesia. Intra-articular anaesthesia of the stifle joint was impossible because of the uncooperative behaviour of the horse. However, provocation tests and radiographs proved diagnostically inconclusive. Therefore, magnetic resonance imaging of the right stifle was performed, revealing a tibial fissure fracture. The result was diagnostic and surprising, considering the degree and chronic nature of the lameness. Based on the findings of magnetic resonance imaging, the horse underwent surgery by the locking compression technique to restore full limb function. All implants were removed six months after surgery. The gelding returned to training without any signs of lameness.
