Contents of ginkgoflavonoglycosides and macronutrients were analysed in leaves of maidenhair trees, collected from one- and two-year-old shoots, at four dates in 2002, from a field plantation established from a selected biotype. Gingkoflavonoglycoside contents were always higher in leaves collected from one-year-old shoots and ranged from 1.28% (30 August) to 1.54% (15 July). The highest contents of nitrogen, calcium and magnesium were recorded in leaves from one-year-old shoots, while that of potassium was higher in leaves collected from one-year-old shoots. Phosphorus content in July and mid-August was similar in one- and two-year-old leaves. In the third decade of August, especially in leaves collected from one-year-old shoots, phosphorus content was the lowest, amounting to 0.20%.
Background. Monitoring energy intake in preschool children is the basis for planning intervention programmes. The published articles in which energy intake in Polish preschool children was reported are still very few. Objective. The objective was to assess energy intake in preschool children from Piła, including energy intake and intake of energy from macronutrients. Material and Methods. Energy intake was assessed from weighed food records kept over seven consecutive days by preschool staff and parents of 122 children, 61 girls and 61 boys, aged 4 to 6 years. Energy intake was calculated using Dieta 4.0 and Microsoft Excel computer programmes. Weight and height were measured and BMI was calculated. Statistical analysis was carried out using the IBM SPSS Statistics 21 computer programme. Results. Energy intake was the lowest in underweight children, 1286 kcal, and the highest in obese children, 1636 kcal. Energy intake (kcal, kJ, kcal/kg body weight, kJ/kg body weight) and intake of energy from sucrose (%) were statistically significantly higher in boys compared to girls, 1546 vs 1428 kcal, 6477 vs 5985 kJ, 77 vs 71 kcal/kg body weight, 322 vs 298 kJ/kg body weight, and 21.2 vs 19.7%, respectively. Intake of energy from starch was statistically significantly higher in girls compared to boys, 24.8 vs 23.4%. It is noteworthy that energy intakes from fat and saturated fatty acids were above the recommendations in 71.3% and 98.4% of the studied preschool children, respectively. Energy intakes from polyunsaturated fatty acids and available carbohydrates were below the recommendations in 98.4% and 57.4% of the studied preschool children, respectively. Conclusions. Energy intakes from macronutrients in the studied preschool children need urgent modification to prevent the risk of future diet-related diseases. Preschoolers’ parents and preschool staff should be educated about nutrition recommendations for children, especially about dietary risks of diseases and impaired neurodevelopment.
In the late 18th and early 19th c., a drastic reduction in the area of forests due to their excessive exploitation occurred in Europe, which gave rise to the birth of afforestation efforts. The chemical composition of plants, including trees, depends on the many biotic and abiotic environmental factors. The aim of this study was to determine the content of some nutrients in needles and bark of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), leaves and bark of silver birch (Betula pendula) and Norway maple (Acer platanoides L.), depending on their location. The content of phosphorus, potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium depended on a plant species, plant organ and the location of sample collection. The leaves of silver birch, compared to its bark, contained ten-fold more potassium and six-fold more phosphorus and magnesium. The content of phosphorus was the highest in silver birch leaves in the center of Olsztyn. The highest potassium content was observed in silver birch leaves and Norway maple bark in the center of Olsztyn. The calcium content was the highest in the leaves and bark of maple trees growing near State Road 51 and in the leaves of this species in the city center. The highest sodium content was detected in the leaves and bark of most tree species growing along State Road 51 and in the center of Olsztyn.
Chemical composition of common wheat – Triticum aestivum ssp. vulgare Vill. Host., hard wheat – Triticum durum Desf., and spelt – Triticum aestivum ssp. spelta (L.) Thell grains was investigated. Total protein, wet gluten, fiber, ash, carbohydrates, falling number, macronutrients (phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium), and microelements (copper, iron, manganese, zinc) were determined. Also standard deviation, variability and correlation coefficients were calculated. Hard wheat and spelt lines were characterized by much higher contents of total protein, wet gluten, and falling number value than common wheat; however, the highest protein concentration and falling number was recorded in grains of hard wheat. Common wheat was distinguished by low ash content and the highest carbohydrates level. Higher percentage of macronutrients and microelements in grains of spelt and hard wheat, as compared to common wheat, confirms the usefulness of these species for foodstuff production. Among the qualitative traits studied, content of carbohydrates appeared to be the least variable (cv = 2.2%), while the highest variability (cv = 31.1%) was shown by fat content. Significant correlations for the following trait pairs were observed: protein–gluten, protein–carbohydrates, fat–ash, fat–falling number, carbohydrates– gluten, and ash–falling number.
The study focused on identifying hygienic lifestyle factors related to different nutritional status (NS) of free living people. 12 anthropometrical parameters characterizng NS of the group of 271 students (♀: 144, ♂- 127), selected from local University, were used in cluster analysis for indicating homogenous cluster groups ("slim", "medium", "fat"). As factors representing hygienic lifestyle there were considered: composition of diet (12 factors) and level of physical activity - PA (2 factors). The most important factor influencing NS was dietary supply of energy, macronutrients (especially plant protein) and food fiber and in lower extent level of physical activity.
The Woolly Foxglove (Digitalis lanata) is one of the herbal plants cultivated in Poland. It is grown as important plant material for production of cardenolides used in the pharmaceutical industry. The aim of the research has been to determine the chemical composition and mole ratios in leaves of cv. Victoria Woolly Foxglove affected by mineral fertilisation. For this purpose, a strict, one-factor, micro-plot field experiment was set up in randomised blocks with four replications. The experimental factor was NPK mineral fertilisation applied to soil in the following doses per hectare. A0 – no mineral fertilisation, A1 – 40 kg N + 17.48 kg P + 49.8 kg K, A2 – 80 kg N + 34.96 kg P + 99.6 kg K, A3 – 120 kg N + 52.44 kg P + 149.4 kg K. For chemical analyses, samples of 0.50 kg of leaves were taken from each plot. Dried, melted and wet mineralised in sulphuric(VI) acid, the samples were analysed and concentrations of the following elements were determined: nitrogen by Kjeldahl method, total phosphorus by the colorimetric method with ammonium molybdate, potassium, calcium and sodium by flame photometry, and magnesium by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Mole ratios of the chemical elements in leaves were also calculated. In general, the use of mineral fertilisation induced a significant increase in the content of total nitrogen, total phosphorus and potassium, but reduced the sodium concentration in leaves of the Woolly Foxglove compared to the control. After the applied fertilisation doses, the K:Ca and K:Na ratios in leaves were significantly broadened and the Ca:P ratio was narrowed. Significantly higher values of the K:(Ca + Mg) ratio were observed in leaves after applying the medium (A2) and highest NPK ha–1 (A3) doses. The Ca:Mg ratio in leaves of the Woolly Foxglove was distinctly narrowed versus the control after using the lowest fertilisation dose (A1). However, after applying the medium dose of NPK (A2), the K:Mg ratio was broader than in the control treatment.
The actual yields of sugar beets harvested by farmers in Poland are much below the yielding potential of currently cultivated varieties, even when grown on fertile soils. Deficiency of micronutrients can be considered as a factor which prohibits reaching a state of nutrient balance, especially in nitrogen, by a crop. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of foliar application of multi-microelement fertilizers on a sugar beet nutritional status in early stages of canopy growth and, in turn, on yields of taproots and recoverable sugar. For this purpose, in two growing seasons, 2005 and 2006, eight field trials were set up in the region of Wielkopolska on fertile soils originated from sandy loam. A simple experimental design comprised three treatments: (1) control (a plot fertilized only with NPK), and (2) multi-microelement fertilizer composed of cations (Mi), (3) cations plus boron (MiB). It has been found that the applied micronutrient fertilizers had a significant effect, irrespectively of the field location and seasonal yield variability, on the sugar beet nutritional status, especially in terms of nitrogen. Yields of taproots have increased by 31.6% and 22.1% for the NPK+Mi and NPK+MiB treatments, respectively. Almost the same degree of increase was noted for yields of recoverable sugar. The achieved nitrogen balance at the stage of harvestable part development, as measured at BBCH43, was probably the main reason for high positive response of sugar beet crop to external supply of micronutrients. All the analyzed standards of sugar beet nutritional status, DRIS indices, responded to the investigated experimental factor, i.e., foliar application of multi-microelement fertilizer, but only those for nitrogen underwent a change from negative to positive values, thus enabling us to make a reliable yield prognosis.
Cumbers of a parthenocarpic variety Marinda F₁ were grown in the field under protective shields, i.e. a perforated PE sheet and PP needled cloth (17 g·m⁻²), during the years 2001–2003. Unshielded plots served as the control treatment. It was found that the concentrations of nitrogen, calcium and iron increased significantly in cucumber plants grown under PP needled cloth. The edible parts of cucumbers were characterized by widened K : Ca, K : (Mg+Ca) and K : Mg ratios, as well as by favorable Ca : Mg ratios.

Selenium is an essential element for humans, animals and some species of microorganisms. In higher plants, however, the role of selenium is still unclear. Because selenium enrichment may influence the nutrient balance of plants, a study was done to test the effects of selenite-Se (Na2SeO3⋅5H2O) on selected macronutrients content in maize (Zea mays L. var. saccharata Kcke. cv. Złota Karłowa) seedlings. Plants were grown in Hoagland I nutrient solution (pH 6,2) amended with selenite at 0 (control), 5, 25, 50 and 100 μmol⋅dm-3 for 14 days. The dry weight of the shoots was then analyzed for phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) content. Phosphorus and calcium content increased, while potassium content decreased with increasing selenium treatments. No significant differences were found for magnesium level. Plant growth was affected by excessive selenium concentration. At low concentration (5 μmol⋅dm-3), selenium tended to stimulate the plant growth and the root elongation but at higher concentrations (50 and 100 μmol⋅dm-3) the dry mass accumulation and root tolerance index severely decreased. The study revealed that disturbances of growth and reduction of plant’s biomass at the presence of high selenium concentrations in the nutrient solution may have resulted from the disturbance of mineral balance of plants, namely accumulation of large amounts of calcium and phosphorus in shoot tissues.
Garden thyme is a very important essential herbal plant grown in Poland. As well as being able to regulate digestion processes, thyme herbage possesses disinfecting, expectorant, antioxidant, spasmolytic properties. Research has been launched to define the effect of NPK fertilisation on yielding, the content of essential oil as well as the mineral composition of garden thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) herbage. The experimental factor consisted of NPK mineral fertilisation applied into soil at the following doses per hectare and proportions: A0 – without mineral fertilisation, A1 – 30 kg N + 22 kg P + 100 kg K (N:P:K was: 1:0.75:3.33), A2 – 60 kg N (30 kg N + 30 kg N) + 22 kg P + 100 kg K (1:0.37:1.67), A3 – 90 kg N (45 kg N + 45 kg N) + 22 kg P + 100 kg K (1:0.24:1.11). The experiment comprised 4 fertilisation objects with 4 replications, and the sowing area and the harvest area of 3 m2 plot-1. Nitrogen was applied in the form of ammonium nitrate twice: pre-sowing as well as after plant emergence. Phosphorus and potassium were used pre-sowing, in the form of triple superphosphate 40% and 60% of potassium salt, respectively. The doses of 152 kg NPK ha-1 (1:0.75:3.33) – A1 and 182 kg NPK ha-1 (1:0.37:1.67) - A2 showed the most favourable effect on the yield of fresh weight, air-dried weight and essential oil of herbage as well as the quality characteristics of the yields. The dose of 152 kg NPK ha-1 (A1), including 30 kg less nitrogen, was as favourable as that of 182 kg NPK ha-1 in terms of the content of air-dry weight of herbage, essential oil as well as mineral nutrients. Its application also resulted in a similar yield of essential oil. The application of 212 kg NPK ha-1 (1:0.24:1.11) was economically unjustified since, in general, it decreased the size of the yield of fresh weight of herbage and the values of its parameters studied.
Sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is an annual plant belonging to the plant family Lamiaceae. There are many varieties of basil, with leaves of colour from green to purple and with small white or pink flower. In field experiment conducted in the years 2007–2008 there was investigated the effect of nitrogen fertilization in the doses of 50, 150 and 250 kg N·ha-1and irrigation on yielding and nutritional status of basil of ‘Red Rubin’ cultivar grown from transplants. Basil positively responded to irrigation and the increase in its yield under the influence of irrigation amounted from 97.37% to 25.36% in subsequent years of cultivation. Also the dose of nitrogen did advantageously affect basil herb yield. The highest yields were recorded at the dose of 150–250 kg N·ha-1. The highest amount of nitrates ranged from 697.00 to 938.00 mg·kg-1 f.m. was determined in plants fertilized with nitrogen dose of 250 kg N·ha-1. The level of macroelements depended both on irrigation and on nitrogen doses. Irrigation caused decreased amounts of phosphorus, potassium and calcium, while content of magnesium increased. The highest quantities of phosphorus and magnesium were obtained at nitrogen dose of 150 kg N·ha-1, while for the highest values of potassium and calcium nitrogen dose was 250 kg N·ha-1.
Seeds of the Andean lupine are characterised by high nutritional value, and the plant could become an important crop in the production of food and forage. This legume continues to attract growing interest around the world. A field experiment was carried out in in Lower Silesia, Poland, in 2011-2012. Two Andean lupine morphotypes (indeterminate and determinate) were analysed. Andean lupine was grown in treatments characterised by different sowing dates and plant density per m2. Seed yield, macronutrient content, protein content and health were evaluated at harvest. Seed yield was determined by the interaction of all experimental factors. The indeterminate form produced a significantly higher yield than the determinate form, regardless of the sowing date. The factors had little influence on the mineral content of seeds and total protein content. Andean lupine seeds were colonised mostly by saprotrophic fungi of the genera Alternaria, Cladosporium, Epicoccum and Rhizopus and pathogenic fungi of the genera Botrytis, Colletotrichum and Fusarium. Delayed sowing contributed to seed colonisation by fungi of the genus Colletotrichum. The determinate form was more susceptible to infection than the indeterminate form. Molecular analysis showed that the Colletotrichum isolates found in the study belong to the Colletotrichum acutatum species complex. The pathogen causing lupine anthracnose, isolated from the seeds of Andean lupine in the present study, was identified as Colletotrichum lupini (within C. acutatum complex) in a molecular analysis, and its DNA sequence was compared with those of the isolates deposited in the GenBank.
