Long-term water quality monitoring of a transboundary river

This paper presents an assessment of the water quality of the transboundary Wisznia River (Poland). The environmental state of this transboundary river is described in terms of monthly monitoring data for the main physicochemical and biological parameters. The eight indicators of water quality taken into account included: nutrients (nitrate, phosphorus), salinity, and biological oxygen demand. Long-term water quality data (for 1990-2012), collected from two sample sites was investigated. A substantial decrease in the amount of nutrient substances in the later years can be noticed. This is the result of changes in agriculture and the construction of sewage treatment plants.

The article presents the concept of a measurement unit for monitoring landslide risk areas. The unit is a part of an innovative integrated system created for long-term measurements. The apparatus allows to measure the changes in baseline lengths between the points mounted on the ground. Configuring the system and measurement equipment will allow automatic measurement and remote data transmission. This paper presents the components of the measuring system and the sample implementation of the system in the area adjacent to the landslide in the Milówka village (hamlet Prusów). The first results of measurements are also presented. It is worth mentioning that both single item and the proposed system may support the decision-making procedures in order to determine the suitability of land for investment purposes.

W 2013 roku pod nasypem w pobliżu obiektu mostowego w ciągu drogi ekspresowej zainstalowano monitoring konstrukcji posadowienia nasypu. Głównym celem poznawczym monitoringu była obserwacja zaprojektowanego i wykonanego przez Keller Polska sposobu posadowienia nasypu drogowego w postaci kolumn przemieszczeniowych CSC® (Controlled Stiffness Columns) z warstwą transmisyjną i siatką stalową. W ramach systemu monitoringu zaprojektowano pomiary osiadania nasypu, odkształceń i przemieszczeń siatki stalowej, nacisków pionowych na kolumny i grunt, sił w kolumnach oraz przemieszczeń poziomych skrajnych kolumn i gruntu między kolumnami na krawędzi nasypu. Mimo problemów podczas instalacji i utrzymania sprawności systemu pomiarowego udało się prowadzić monitoring przez ponad 4 lata. W artykule, oprócz szczegółowych wyników monitoringu, autorzy przedstawili wsteczną analizę MES zachowania się konstrukcji posadowienia nasypu na podstawie uzyskanych danych z długookresowego pomiaru, pozwalającą na weryfikację doboru odpowiednich modeli konstytutywnych i metodyki obliczeń konstrukcji tego typu.

Long-term population trends of corvids wintering in urban parks in Central Poland

Changes in the numbers of corvids wintering in Warsaw (Central Poland), in the last sixteen years were analyzed. Four species were studied: Rook Corvus frugilegus L., Jackdaw C. monedula L., Hooded Crow C. corone cornix L. and Magpie Pica pica (L.) The results were based on density data for birds foraging in three urban parks. The bird counts were conducted in November and December 1988–2003. It was found that the number of wintering Rooks decreased significantly (0.5 fold), populations of Jackdaws and Hooded Crows – increased (4.25 and 3.95 fold, respectively), and no apparent trends were observed for Magpies during this period. Observed trends for Rooks as well as comparisons of limited data gathered earlier in other areas may confirm suggestions about the changing of migration routes of this species.
