Placing the whole Białowieski National Park under the highest form of protection is indispensable due to the threat of the irreversible loss of unique elements of biodiversity related to the occurrence of advanced developmental stages of natural tree stands. Such a loss would also involve wasting the possibility of renatulisation of the Białowiesk Forest and its significance as the European gene and information bank on natural processes. Extending the Białowieski National Park is also a great challenge if existing economic and social problems of the region are considered. The status of the national park for the whole Białowieski Forest would foster economic and social revitalisation of underdeveloped municipalities. False information disseminated by those interested in not extending the Park spoils a substantive discussion on actual issues of the Białowieska Forest.

The dispute on extending the Białowieski National Park to include the whole area of the Polish part of the Białowieska Forest has been developing for nearly ten years. Now, there are no chances to put end to it as two basic questions must be replied. The first is whether the inclusion of the whole area of the forest in the Białowieski National Park is indispensable for the preservation of its natural values: the second whether the current division into the national park and forest tourism complex is viable and reasonable.

Peat bogs of the “West Sudety” Promotional Forest Complex are considered as the raised and temporary type, they present unique and specific features of mountain peat bogs of sub arctic character. Biggest pig bogs are situated in Reserve of the Izera Valley Peat Bog – the biggest in Poland reserve of mountain peat bogs. On the area of 574 ha bog is found to the depth of ca 2,5 m.
