Nigrospora sphaerica collected on living leaves of Celtis australis L. (Cannabaceae) from Himachal Pradesh, India is a new host record. Symptoms of the disease on leaves appeared in the form of small, circular to irregular, brown - coloured spots surrounded by a yellow zone. The fungus isolated was identified as Nigrospora sphaerica (Sacc.) E.W. Mason, on the basis of cultural and morphological characters. The fungus is described and illustrated.
Bacterial leaf blight is one of the major diseases in rice and affects yields. Thus, various methods have been applied to protect rice from this disease. Here, we show systemic translocation of the human drug niclosamide (5-chloro-N-(2-chloro-4-nitrophenyl)- 2-hydroxybenzamide) in rice and its long-term effect on prevention of rice leaf blight. The development of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae-induced rice leaf blight was effectively inhibited in untreated systemic leaves as in niclosamide-treated leaves, although its effect gradually decreased in a time-dependent manner. Time-course examination after niclosamide treatment showed that the niclosamide level was highest after 3 h in non-treated distal leaves, suggesting fast systemic movement of niclosamide from the treated local site to untreated distal regions. Our data indicate that niclosamide controls rice leaf blight by its rapid systemic movement and that its effect is maintained for a long time.

The field observations were carried out in 1999-2004 on 29 fields in Latvia. Incidence and severities of wheat leaf diseases were determined. Tan pot caused by Drechslera tritici-repentis and Septoria leaf blotch, induced by Septoria tritici were the most harmful diseases at the time of research (incidence 10-100% and 1-100%, respectively). Also the incidence of powdery mildew, caused by Blomeria graminis was high (4-100%), while that of rusts (Puccinia tritici and P. striiformis) was very low. Changes in disease epidemics were determined and showed the differences between the analyzed diseases.
The effect of the forecrop and differentiated chemical plant protection on the intensity of fungal leaf diseases of winter wheat were studied from 1999–2008. Five (I–V) separate experiments were conducted in Mazury (Szestno I,), Żuławy Wiślane (Lisewo II), and Powiśle (Wielgłowy III, IV and Radostowo V). The intensity of diseases varied. Powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis) was noted in relatively low or trace intensity. On the other hand, there was a large amount of necrotic leaf spot complexes caused by Mycosphaerella graminicola, Stagonospora nodorum, Pyrenophora tritici-repentis and Fusarium spp. In 2000, 2001 and 2003 brown rust (Puccinia recondita) was noted in high intensity. The applied treatments were very effective in reducing fungal disease on leaves. The surface of the upper leaves (Green leaf area – GLA) with no symptoms of infection and fungicide use were significantly higher than in the control. It was also found that the GLA of crops grown after oilseed rape was higher than the GLA of crops grown after wheat.
In Latvia, climatic factors are influential in spreading of Fusarium head blight of cereals caused by Fusarium species. The most significant factor affecting the incidence of the disease in winter wheat is hightened temperature at the time of wheat anthesis. Field trials for the control of the disease in winter wheat were done in 2003-2004 using new fungicides applied at various rates by natural infection and artificial inoculation. Three species of causative agents: Fusarium avenaceum var. herbarum, F. gibbosum, F. culmorum were collected from infected seeds of wheat and used for inoculation of experimental plots at the concentration 106 conidia ml-1 (1:1:1) at the stage of full anthesis. Effective control of the disease was obtained through application of new fungicides with different active ingredient: Prosaro 250 EC (tebuconazole 125 G, prothioconazole 125 G L-1), Input 460 EC (spiroxamine 300 G, prothioconazole 160 G L-1). In conditions of artificial infection by severe attack of Fusarium spp. the application of fungicides containing tebuconazole at T3 gave significant influence on yield of winter wheat through plumpness of grains increase. High efficacy of fungicides against leaf infection with Erysiphe graminis and Drechslera tritici-repentis was also in the trial achieved. Application of fungicide containing cyproconazole and trifloxystrobin at T1 in the trial 2004 gave good control of Septoria tritici, E. graminis and D. triticirepentis.

Tan spot (Pyrenophora tritici-repentis) is one of the most important wheat diseases in Latvia. Significant spreading of this disease was observed from 1998. Field experiments were carried out at the Research and Training Farm „Peterlauki” of the Latvia University of Agriculture, during 1998-2003. Development of diseases was observed on 14 winter wheat varieties, dynamics of development was investigated on 'Donskaja polukarlikovaja' and 'Stava'. Assessments of the disease severity were carried out on the upper three leaves each week from the start of stem elongation to full ripening. Tan spot was observed at the stage of stem elongation in 2003, and only after flowering in 1999. Increase of the disease severity was slow until stage of milk ripeness, and only in late stages of wheat development sharp increase of the disease was observed. Total rate of infection (through the session of vegetation) was very slow (0,01-0,19), but during ripening rate achieved 0,5-0,6. The main reason of so unequal development of the disease seems changes in amount of infection sources. Other possible reason of rapid increase of the disease development is the relationship between leaf age and susceptibility to the disease. Further research is necessary for better understanding of tan spot life cycle.
Biological peculiarities of the rye scald fungus Rhynchosporium secalis (Oud.) J. J. Davis, in one population of North-West region were examined. Seventy-eight isolates, the causal agent of scald, were taken from infected rye plants. This isolates were analalysed on rate of growth on artificial test medium, structure and color and temperature dependence. Single-spore strains were obtained from each natural isolate. Color and structure of some single-spore isolates remained stable through repeated transfers to fresh PDA medium.
Leaf diseases' influence the relationship between the yield and yield components of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Field experiments were conducted during 2003-2006 on a light loamy gleyic cambisoil in the central part of Lithuania to determine how leaf disease severity level affects grain yield and yield components. The area under disease progress curves (AUDPC), grain yield and yield components were analysed using the analysis of variance and correlations. Infected wheat straw was applied to initiate epidemics in all treatments. Three winter wheat cultivars: Hereward, Aron and Tauras differing in the level of resistance to leaf diseases were used in the experiments. In total, six treatments were established: (i) untreated control, (ii) powdery mildew control (pmc) + leaf diseases severity level 0%, (iii) pmc + leaf diseases severity level 1.0-5.0%, (iv) pmc + leaf diseases severity level 5.1-10.0%, (v) pmc + leaf diseases severity level 10.1-25.0%, (vi) pmc + leaf diseases severity level > 25.1%. Wheat in all treatments, except for the untreated control, was protected by morpholine and triazole fungicides. Yield and yield components were affected by leaf diseases in all the treated cultivars during all experimental years. Significant (p ≶ 0.01) medium and strong correlation coefficients were found between AUDPC and yield in all the treated cultivars under high pressure of leaf diseases in 2004.
Field experiments were carried out in the seasons 2000/2001 and 2001/2002 in Plant Protection Institute, Sośnicowice Branch to assess the influence of foliar fertilizers such as Ekolist PK 1, Ekolist Mg, Mikrosol Z and Urea on healthiness of winter wheat. Foliar fertilizers were mixed with fungicides. The fungicides were applied at full or half recommended doses. The effect of the disease on wheat leaves was evaluated three times in each vegetation season. Remaining green leaf area (GLA) of leaves was also determined. GLA of the leaves F-1 was not significantly different for each combination with different fertilization and different levels of chemical treatment. The application of foliar fertilizer only had no effect on green leaf area (GLA). The results indicate that foliar fertilization of all experimental plots improved leaf condition and therefore halted the development of wheat leaf diseases. The increases of 1000 grain mass and yield was high for each plot where a fertilizer and a full or half dose of a fungicide was applied. Foliar fertilizing with no chemical control had no proven effect on studied parameters.
