Balea fallax (Rossm.) collected from the Roztocze Upland (SE. Poland) was kept in the laboratory for four years. Observations were conducted between March and October when the snails were kept at room temperature (18-25°C); in winter they were stored at 3°C. The egg-laying period started in late March and lasted till October, with maxima in spring and early autumn. The snails laid oval, gelatinous eggs with separatecalcium carbonate crystals in the external envelope (average egg size 1.96 × 1.73 mm). The eggs were deposited in batches (up to 14 eggs at a time) or singly. The number of batches per snail per year ranged between 1and 4. Snails isolated before maturation laid defective eggs which failed to develop, which suggest that the speciesis incapable of uniparental reproduction or at least the ability is very limited. The reproduction rate decreased during consecutive years, probably as a result of the aging or the shortage of allosperm in isolated individuals.Compared to batches of typically oviparous clausiliids, eggs of B. fallax hatched slightly earlier (interval between oviposition and hatching lasted 8-10 days at room temperature). It is likely that the adults retained developing eggs in the uterus for a short time. The juveniles needed at least 6 months to attain the ultimates hell size.
The diploid chromosome set of Arion vulgaris Moquin-Tandon consists of 52 chromosomes, with the karyotype formula: 2n = 44m+6sm+2st=52; FN = 104. The chromosome number (n = 26, 2n = 52) of A. vulgaris is identical to that of A. subfuscus sensu lato, A. ater (L.) and A. rufus (L.) which may suggest their close relationship.

Helicopsis striata in the Lower Odra valley

Forested scree slopes represent one of the types of shallow subterranean habitats characterised by several unique traits, such as close contact with the soil surface, better availability of organic matter, and lower seasonal fluctuations in microclimate. Relatively varied assemblages of gastropods were collected using a series of subterranean traps filled with formaldehyde or ethylene glycol, exposed inside a forested scree slope at depths from 5 to 95 cm in the Natural Nature Reserve Sivec (eastern Slovakia). The number of gastropods was smaller compared to arthropods. The material of 120 specimens consisted of 22 gastropod species representing 15 families. Almost 87% of the specimens were captured near the soil surface (5– 15 cm) and only few of them penetrated deeper. Ethylene glycol was more effective than formaldehyde in collecting gastropods. No subterranean species were found. Forest species predominated over some hygrophilous and petrophilous ones.
Growth of Chilostoma faustinum (Rossmässler, 1835) was recorded under natural conditions in Romincka Forest (NE. Poland), one of the northernmost localities of the species. During the growing season (April–October) the average growth rate was 0.22 whorl/month. In the local conditions Ch. faustinum Leeds three growing seasons to complete its shell growth. Shells of Ch. faustinum from Romincka Forest are slightly smaller than in the other studied populations: their average width is 16.5 mm (range 13–19 mm); and the average number of whorls is 4.5 (range 4–5).
Moisture along with available calcium content are the major environmental factors controlling species richness and composition of the terrestrial molluscan fauna. In the present study, we focused on snails in a floodplain forest and their response on humidity. We described the model of response and calculate the humidity optima of particular species if possible. Generalised linear model (GLM) combined with Poisson distribution was used to ch aracterise the change of species abundance along a humidity gradient. From 31 species tested, 21 have shown significant response to humidity. The majority of specie s tested had unimodal response, four species showed monotonic regression type. Based on their humidity optima, species distributed along a moisture gradient belonged to three main ecological groups: (i) mesohygrophilous woodland species living mostly in non-inundated areas with humidity optima below 4, (ii) hygrophilous, forest hygrophilous and euryhygric species with optima between 4 and 6 and (iii) strongly hygrophilous (polyhygrophilous) species with mois ture optima above 6. Estimated moisture preferences for Danubian floodplain woodland land snail fauna would be a useful tool in a longterm biological monitoring of changing moisture regime.
Two localities of Pupilla pratensis were found in the environs of Gubin and Stęszew, W. Poland. Only one recent record of the species, earlier regarded as an ecotype of the widespread P. muscorum, was known from Poland. Consequently, the distribution and conservation status of the species are not well known. Our data indicate that P. pratensis is rare and has specific habitat requirements. In our study area it was found in only two out of 71 examined localities of a very similar habitat type and sampled on the same occasions. The two localities are wet meadows covered by sedges (mostly Carex acutiforis) growing on a calcareous peat substratum of lacustrine origin; the species is accompanied by two rare and legally protected vertiginids: Vertigo angustior and V. moulinsiana.
A specimen of Trochulus hispidus from Buchenbach, Germany, had its male and female parts of thereproductive system completely separated. The female part lacked auxiliary organs. The male part opened into the genital atrium, but the vas deferens was blind-ended in a way precluding sperm transfer.
Prevalence, intensity and abundance of protostrongylid larvae in snails and slugs were studied on 10 sheep and goat pastures in the region of Stara Zagora, Southern Bulgaria, in 2001. Eight gastropod species were infected: Helicella obvia, Cernuella virgata, Monacha cartusiana, Zebrina detrita, Cepaea vindobonensis, Chondrula microtraga, Helix pomatia and Deroceras reticulatum. Four nematode species were identified: Muellerius capillaris, Neostrongylus linearis, Cystocaulus ocreatus and Protostrongylus sp. Helicella obvia was the most common and abundant snail, and showed the highest infection parameters. Cernuella virgata was the only species in one pasture and had high infection descriptors. Monacha cartusiana and Zebrina detrita had high infection levels in some pastures. A subset of data representing the infection of H. obvia was used to test for relationships with environmental characteristics. Protostrongylid infections in this host species showed considerable variation between sites. M. capillaris had the highest prevalence and intensity, followed by C. ocreatus and Protostrongylus sp. Comparisons of sites at lower vs at upper elevations did not show significant differences in infection, with the exception of Protostrongylus sp. The primary vegetation was the only explanatory variable for the total prevalence of protostrongylids. This variable, in a combination with altitude, mollusc species richness and sample size explained 73% of the variation of mean intensity. In the models explaining variations in the prevalence and the mean intensity of the nematode species, 9 variables were included: primary vegetation, altitude, annual precipitation, mean annual precipitation, mollusc and nematode species richness, concentration of inorganic nitrogen in soil, snail population density and ratio between the number of goats and the number of sheep grazing on pasture. H. obvia was considered a suitable screening species for assessing the pasture contamination in the region.
