Calls, duetting songs and antiphonal singing of the Barred Laughing-thrush, an endemic species of birds in China, were recorded and analysed sonagraphically for the first time. The male can give several kinds of calls, each of which has a simple structure with obvious elements and with little variation. The female repeats her call 2-5 times with little variation. Both sexes give a separate feeding call which sounds like "miao, miao, miao". This call has a fundamental frequency range from 1.5- 2.5 kHz and lasts 0.22 sec. A first harmonic ranges from 1.5-2.5 kHz and lasts 0.4 sec. The birds react to a playback of the feeding call. When duetting, the vocalizations of both the male and the female are simple. The duet is initiated by the female, whereas antiphonal singing is initiated by the male.
