Last December, Kraków Royal Castle, hosted the grand 25th session of the Voluntary Committee for the Renovation of Kraków Heritage. The session was chaired by professor Tadeusz Chrzanowski (Chairman of SKOZK) and professor Jan Ostrowski (Castle Director) with such attendees as the President Aleksander Kwaśniewski, kardinal Macharski, the Minister for Culture and Heritage, Waldemar Dąbrowski, alongside city and voyevodship authority representatives. The opening lecture by Andrzej Kurz reminded that, in 1978, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee listed the historical Krakow city centre, Wawel Castle and Kazimierz in the top 12 world heritage monuments. He went on to remind that on 12 December, following a lengthy campaign by art community and Krakow authorities, SKOZK was formed and so began the work to give the rank of National Endeavour to the Krakow renovation project. This would make possible for all Poles to make contributions into recreating the beauty of the city, bolstering up our knowledge of the past and thus raising the profile of Polish culture and history internationally. The Kraków project is to be the paragon of measured, determined and responsible renovation programme. The Mayor of Kraków, professor Jacek Majchrowski, also a vice-chairman of SKOZK, mentioned that renovated historical heart of the city, together with well managed green areas and 'human' scale architecture will attract visitors from all over the world, to the benefit of the local communities. Cardinal Franciszek Macharski pointed out that SKOZK had a moral duty to persist in their efforts. Such is the importance of their work for the very roots our culture and Christian civilisation. President Aleksander Kwaśniewski emphasised that the committee and their work were a very positive factor in saving Kraków from the ensuing ecological catastrophe. He also said that the historic Kraków stands as a proof of Poland's historic links with Europe.
