Based on previously published electrophoretic data on genetic variability in 31 roe deer Capreolus capreolus Linnaeus, 1758 populations, the proportion of loci polymorphic (P), average heterozygosity (H), and the inbreeding coefficient (FIS) were examined for relationships with the social structure displayed in the various populations. Our hypothesis was that genetic variability is lower and FIS-values are more positive in populations where males maintain a stable pattern of territories during the rutting season (forest dwelling roe deer) than in those characterized by pronounced fluctuations in population structure, both within and among seasons (field or mountain dwelling roe deer). P and H did not show differences among those two groups. FIS was significantly more positive in the 'forest' roe deer than in the more migratory 'type', but only when populations subjected to high culling rates were excluded from the analysis. Highly negative FIS-values in forest populations with high culling rates suggested that considerable perturbations of population structure may be caused by hunting. In conclusion, the 'forest' roe deer and the 'field' roe deer do not represent two distinct ecotypes with a particular genetic integrity, but rather reflect the considerable behavioural plasticity of the species.
A link between dental abnormalities and loss of genetic variation has been reported for unconfined populations of American bison Bison bison (Linnaeus, 1758) but not for captive populations. From a zoo herd with a small founder population and likely history of inbreeding, we report the first recorded occurrence of dental abnormalities in captive bison and the first case of supernumerary second premolars in bison.
Inbreeding and relationship are presented in the Beagle dog population as well as the contribution of founders and ancestors to the active population of Beagles recorded in the herdbook of the Cracow Branch of the Polish Kennel Club. From four-generation pedigrees of 84 Beagle dogs (29 males and 55 females) born in 1996-2007, one-generation pedigrees of 611 individuals (267 males and 344 females) were created. The inbreeding (FX) and relationship (RXY) coefficients were estimated for all 611 animals, for each sex separately and between sexes. For the active population of 84 animals, founders and ancestors were determined. Among all the animals, 13.75% (12.36% of males and 14.83% of females) were inbred; about 43% of those belonged to the active population. The mean FX values for all and for inbred individuals amounted to 0.0068 and 0.0492, respectively (0.0070 for all males, 0.0066 for all females, 0.0565 for inbred males and 0.0445 for inbred females). About 12.28% of pairs were related. The mean RXY was 0.0104 and 0.0848 for all and related pairs, respectively ( 0.0095 and 0.0926 in males, 0.0114 and 0.0807 in females, 0.0101 and 0.0853 between sexes. There were total of 222 founders and 54 ancestors. The effective numbers of founders and ancestors were 102 and 26,respectively. There were 29 main founders revealed. Four founders contributed from 2% to approx.3% of genes while the others only 1-2%. Seven out of 34 main ancestors contributed from 4% to over 10% genes, and remaining ones - up to 4%. One individual was both main founder and main ancestor.
Analysis of genetic structure of Silesian horses from National Stud. The aim of the study was to analyze the genetic composition of Silesian horses bred in "Książ" National Stud basing on their pedigreesand to try to answer the following question: is the subdivision of Silesian horse population really necessary to prevent local horse breed? As the material 72 pedigrees of brood mares and stallions, born between 1991 and 2009 were used. On average, 93.1% of animals were inbred, there were 96.55% inbred stallions and 90.70% inbred mares. The mean inbreeding coefficient for all horses was 2.3%, for inbred horses it reached 2.5%. There were more inbred mares (39) than stallions (28). All 72 Silesian horses from "Książ" State Stud were related with the average relationship coefficient of 8.5%. The total and effective number of founders were 458 and 163, respectively. The total andeffective number of ancestors were 64 and 22, respectively. Among the founding breeds Thoroughbred horses predominated, the next were Oldenburg and Silesian horses, whereas among ancestors there were much more Silesian horses than Thorougbreds. All in all, the genetic diversity of the Silesian horses from "Książ" National Stud was satisfactory, however its monitoring is required because of both upward inbreeding and 100% related animals. Because the population of Silesian horses is small, less than 2,000 animals and sligtly over 1,000 animals included in conservation programme, the artifical subdivision of this population as proposed in the new breeding programme, which would result in creation of two subpopulations: “old-type” and “new-type” Silesian horses, is not recommended. For maintaining genetic diversity, it could be also possible to carefully import of semen or stallions of similar breeds, i.e. German Alt-Oldenburger horses or German Heavy Warmblood horses. The plan should also include the matings recommended within the population of all available Silesian horses of both types. The authors consider introducing such a program essential. It should be also clearly stated in the plan how large proportion of the Silesian mares population could be each year mated to Thoroughbredstallions. Division into two types implies that some fraction of new-type Silesian horses and their progeny would not be regarded as potential parents of individuals for the conservation programme.
The aim of this study was to develop an inbred lines from octoploid strawberry and to determine their breeding value by estimating the effects of general combining ability (GCA) and mid-parent heterosis. All inbred lines were obtained through selfing using five cultivars. The number of inflorescences, number of flowers per inflorescence, fruit yield, fruit number per plant, average fruit weight, number and weight of leaves as well as number of runners per plant were recorded from 2014 to 2015. The highest breeding value was estimated for maternal forms of ‘Senga Sengana’ 17 for six important traits. The lowest GCA effects were exhibited by inbred lines derived from clone 1387 18. Degree of heterosis for a given trait differed greatly among hybrids. The highest heterosis in terms of a number of inflorescences, fruit yield, number of fruits per plant and leaf weight occurred in the Kent 7-14 × ‘Dukat’ progeny. The results obtained could be used to evaluate the agronomic performance and to make more efficient choices of parents in current strawberry breeding programs
We investigated fluctuating asymmetry in 13 traits of the skulls and jaws of historical and contemporary populations of Scandinavian gray wolves (Canis lupus). We hypothesized that there is a higher level of fluctuating asymmetry in the inbred contemporary population than in the historical population. Our analyses did not detect any difference in the level of fluctuating asymmetry as predicted. We propose different explanation for this lack of change in fluctuating asymmetry. It is assumed that a large number of studies have failed to find a positive correlation between the level of genetic stress and developmental instability and have therefore never been published, which hampers a good understanding of fluctuating asymmetry as an indicator of developmental instability. The current study is thus important in this context. The gray wolf population in Scandinavia is characterized by an extreme bottleneck followed by two and a half decades of strong inbreeding, but no associated change in fluctuating asymmetry is detected.
The aim of the study was to analyse inbreeding and relationship in the Polish population of Black-and-White sires. Data were pedigrees of 25 036 Black-and-White sires born from 1960 through 2000, divided into subsets of 11 447 proven and 13 589 unproven sires, and their 38 228 ancestors, altogether 63 264 animals. Average inbreeding coefficients were about 0.3% for both subsets of sires. Mean relationship coefficients ranged from 0.1% in all animals to 0.7% in the subset of proven sires. Positive time trends in inbreeding coefficients were observed when the subsets of sires were divided into 5-year intervals according to the year of birth and in terms of Holstein Friesian gene contribution.
Recombinant inbred (RI) mouse strains were developed from reciprocal crosses between two inbred strains differing in the proportion of fertilized ova (CBA, 100%; KE, 77%), to analyse the underlying factors. A correlation (r = 0.83, P< 0.01) between fertilization efficiency within 22 RI strains and after mating RI females with KE males proved that oocyte quality was involved. The following oocyte parameters were analysed in RI and progenitor strains: time of meiotic maturation, rapidity of enzymatic removal of egg investments, and proportion of fertilized ova with supplementary spermatozoa in the perivitelline space. Among the RI strains, high incidence of supplementary spermatozoa was correlated with lower efficiency of fertilization (r = -0.58, P < 0.05) and with slow meiotic maturation (r=-64, P < 0.01), suggesting that delayed maturation may affect oocyte ability of being fertilized by the first penetrating spermatozoon. However, significant correlations were also found between characters which coexist within the progenitor strains, but are not likely to be physiologically related; this suggests that RI strains have inherited large blocks of progenitor genomes, not disrupted by recombination. The strain distribution pattern (SDP) of the analysed traits revealed CBA-like, KE-like, and intermediate phenotypes, indicating that they are polygenically determined. No linkages were found between the studied traits and 12 enzymatic markers. However, the SDP for fertilization efficiency showed a preponderance of non-matching strains (15/19) in relation to agouti locus; the known instability of this chromosome region makes it possible that a putative linkage was disrupted by recombination when RI strains were created.
Developmental stability and phenotypic diversity of the bank vole Clethrionomys glareolus Schreber, 1780 were tested in a group of founders collected from natural population in Białowieża National Park (Poland) and in a sample taken from the 20th generation of a laboratory mass-cross strain derived from these founders. Fluctuating asymmetry of 28 skull characters such as the number of foramina were used as a measure of developmental stability. Variance of the foramina on the left and right sides of the skull for the same characters was used as a measure of phenotypic diversity. The data obtained indicate a developmental stability decrease and phenotypic diversity increase as a result of inbreeding during 20 generations in the laboratory.
