Hyperparasitoids of aphids on maize in Opole region in Poland

The studies were carried out on the maize crops grown in monoculture in 2004-2005 on two experimental fields at Łosiów and Wronów in Opole region, Poland. From the aphid mummies collected at both sites secondary parasitoids of the families Pteromalidae, Cynipidae, Megaspilidae, and Encyrtidae were reared. In spring and early summer of 2004, the most abundant were the species of Pteromalidae, with the eudominating species Asaphes suspensus NEES. At the same time of the next year the dominant species were Dendrocerus carpenteri (CURTIS) (Megaspilidae) and Phaenoglyphis villosa (HARTIG) (Charipidae: Alloxistinae). In autumn, the secondary parasitoids occurred only in the second year of the study, 2005. The dominant species at both sites was Phaenoglyphis xanthochroa (FÖRSTER) (Charipidae: Alloxistinae). In the literature available so far there are no data on secondary parasitoids incidence on maize crop in autumn.

Hartig's collection of Alloxysta species, deposited in the Zoologische Staatssammlung Museum (ZSM, Munich, Germany), is here reviewed. In total, 19 species and 144 specimens have been studied. Fourteen species, of the previous twenty-two, are now valid: Alloxysta aperta (Hartig, 1841), A. brachyptera (Hartig, 1840), A. castanea (Hartig, 1841), A. circumscripta (Hartig, 1841), A.fuscicornis (Hartig, 1841), A. leunisii (Hartig, 1841), A. longipennis (Hartig, 1841), A. macrophadna (Hartig, 1841), A. melanogaster (Hartig, 1840), A. obscurata (Hartig, 1840), A. pilipennis (Hartig, 1840), A. postica (Hartig, 1841), A. minuta (Hartig, 1840) and A. rufiventris (Hartig, 1840). These species are redescribed and their morphological features are illustrated in corresponding plates. Alloxysta cursor (Hartig, 1840) and A. erythrothorax (Hartig, 1840) are considered as 'nomen dubium'. Two new synonyms are here established among Hartig's species: Alloxysta defecta (Hartig, 1841) with A. castanea (Hartig, 1841) and A.flavicornis (Hartig, 1841) with A. pilipennis (Hartig, 1840). Additional material of Alloxysta deposited in this museum has been examined and new host records are here reported.

The guilds of primary parasitoids (Ichneumonoidea: Aphidiidae, Chalcidoidea: Aphelinidae) as well as hyperparasitoids (Chalcidoidea: Pteromalidae, Encyrtidae, Eulophidae; Cynipoidea: Charipidae: Alloxystinae, Ceraphronoidea: Megaspilidae) of the two aphid species (Homoptera: Aphididae): Aphis fabae SCOP. on spindle tree and Aphis sambuci L. on common elder in midfield thickets are presented. A role of the midfield thickets, especially of the habitat and the aphid host plants as reservoirs of the parasitoids is discussed.
