The need to improve project delivery process is one of the leading advocacies of relevant construction industry reports. Improved process is sine qua non for improve performance. Critical to the improvement process, is the need to assess construction process’ capability to meet design and production requirements. The present study examined process mapping of a cable-stayed bridge in the Nigeria’s east-west coastal highway project. Qualitative data was collected through a three phase process mapping protocol using mainly self-generate, one-on-one interview and focus group. Twenty non-related sub-processes were identified from four pre-construction stages: investigation; feasibility; design; and tender. Integrative definition (IDEFO) and Unified Language Modelling (UML) are used to map the feasibility, design and the design sub-processes. The mapping indicates the design sequence is iterative and factually flexible until such a point where functional design satisfies appropriate forcing test. The study provides medium for communicating complex construction functions thereby facilitating common understanding in the way projects are delivered with appropriate information about inputs, output and resources.
Road transport is the source of various negative changes in all elements of the environment (air, water, soil, flora and fauna). These changes can result in unfavourable effects on human beings. The most dangerous chemical compounds to be found along roads are: nitrogen oxides, carbon oxide, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals. Noise is the most important physical factor. So far, only a few epidemiologic observations have proven that in populations surrounded by heavy traffic roads is there a noted higher prevalence of respiratory system diseases. Some data also indicate the possibility of higher risk of cancer. Exposure of humans to road traffic results, among other things, in psychic discomfort and sleep disturbances.
Ago-Iwoye –Ilisan road is the major road that links Abeokuta the state capital of Ogun –state to Ijebu towns. The road has always been experiencing pavement failure, which occurs inform of cracks and potholes. Being the major road, the effect of the failure has negative impact on the soicoeconomic growth of Ijebu –areas. The primary objective of the study was to determine the influence of the geotechnical properties of the sub-grade materials on the pavement performance of Ago- Iwoye – Ilishan Road. Eleven (11) soil samples were collected at eight (8) different locations with the aid of hand auger and were air-dried before taken to the laboratory for determination of engineering properties. The Liquid limit and the Plastic limits ranged from 13.9 – 46.2% and 8.1 – 32.7%, with the Plasticity index from 10.6 – 15.9% and Shrinkage limit from 6.2 – 27.7% respectively. The soaked CBR values of the subgrade materials is between 67% and 75% compared with 30% minimum specified by FMWH, 1997. The soils were classified by ASSHTO under the A-6 and A-7 category which shows that the soils are fair to poor as a sub-grade material and USCS classification shows that the soil falls into the SM and SC group. The comparison of all the results with the Nigeria specification (Federal Ministry of Works and Housing general guidelines) for the sub grade materials along the Ago-Iwoye- Ilisian road show that the materials underlain the pavement do satisfy the Nigeria standard. Therefore, the perennial failure frequently experience along the road route is not significantly influenced by subgrade materials. Hence, influence of other factors such as poor drainage courses, level of groundwater table, variation of geologic materials along the road route and poor construction materials should be thoroughly addressed before embarking on future rehabilitation of the highway.
Dependencies of heavy metal concentrations in organs of Tree Sparrow nestlings (Passer montanus), and growth and histopathological changes of these organs in polluted and control (unpolluted) environments of Białystok (53°06' N, 23°10' E; 300,000 inhabitants, NE Poland) were investigated. The highest concentrations of Fe, Zn, Cu, Cd and Pb were found in the liver and kidneys in both environments. Pb concentrations in the polluted areas were highest in the lung and spleen. Comparatively high amounts of Cu and Cd accumulated in pectoral muscles. In all organs the highest concentrations of Fe and lowest of Cd and Pb were found in polluted areas compared with unpolluted ones. Differences of Zn concentrations in nestling organs from both areas were not significant. Concentrations of investigated elements increased during postembryonal development in all organs in both areas. Interactions between Fe and Zn with Cd and Pb were most commonly noticed in the liver, kidneys and lung. Nestlings from the unpolluted areas reached maximum body mass at about the 12th day of their life and biomass gain was more intensive compared with nestlings from the polluted areas, which reached their maximum body mass just before flight from the nests. They grew slower and body mass gain took place until the time of flight from their nests. Differences in the growth and development of nestlings from both areas can be explained by the concentration of toxic heavy metals in the polluted areas. Histopathological changes of nestlings, mainly in their livers, kidneys and lung, were found in both areas. The level of these changes was more intensive in the polluted areas. This state should be connected with the higher concentration of toxic heavy metals in these areas and also with the heredity of diseases causing histopathological abnormalities.
Our study examined soil and plant material for the contents of some elements along route E 75 through Serbia (the section from Belgrade to Preševo), a length of 400 km. European route E 75 is part of the International E-road network, which is a series of main roads in Europe. Samples of soil and aerial parts of plant material were sampled from both sides of lanes at a distance of about 8 km and at 10, 30, 50, and 400 m perpendicular to the direction of the route. In the soil samples we determined pH in 1MKCl and content of total concentrations of Pb, Cu, Ni, and Hg. Plant materials were analyzed for Pb, Cu, Ni, and Hg. It can be concluded that, besides anthropogenic pollution that is reflected in the excessive use of plant protection products and fertilizers and also the impact of air pollution from motor vehicles in certain sections of the examined area, the dominant influence on concentration of some examined elements comes from geochemical composition of parent material from which the soils were developed.
This work summarizes results concerning the nest development of synanthropic birds (Tree Sparrows, House Sparrows, Great Tits, Jackdaws, House Martins) in urban environments, published to date from the research done by the author and sets them against the background of data in the field under discussion. Concentration changes in Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, Co, Cd and Pb were different with age, depending on the health status of nestlings (healthy, sick and dead) and the species. The intensity and directions of changes in the concentrations of elements in the bodies of developing nestlings were found to be dependent on the degree of chemical contamination in the environment. During development in the nest, there was a slower rise in the concentrations of physiological elements (Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn) in the organs (liver, kidneys, lung, heart, spleen, pectoral muscles, brain, feathers, and bones: femur, patella, fibula, tibiotarsus, larsometatarsus)', of nestlings from polluted environments than in those from unpolluted ones. In turn, the concentrations of non-physiological elements (Pb, Cd) showed a greater rate of increase in nestlings from polluted areas, which were also characterized by a slower increase in biomass, with maximum mass being attained just before flight from the nest. Increased Pb and Cd concentrations were associated with impaired growth of nestlings, i.e. decreased asymptote of body masses growth. Unpolluted urban areas are characterized by greater hatching and fledging successes than the polluted ones. Chlorinated hydrocarbons can affect embryonic mortality amj may be an indirect cause of nestling death. Higher concentrations of toxic heavy metals limit the laying-down of physiological elements in nestlings, which accumulate small amounts of Pb and Cd in soft tissues and greater amounts in bones and feathers. Clutch sizes are influenced not only by concentrations (in the bodies of females) of elements important for eggs production, but also by the concentrations of toxic heavy metals in females and eggs - a factor in turn dependent on the concentrations of these metals in the environment (thereby attesting to its degree of pollution). Sparrow nestlings whose lipid content was lower than that necessary to survive the night, had lower Fe concentration in the liver compared with those with higher lipid reserves. Pb and Cd have an unfavourable impact on the lipid and protein reserves of nestlings. Urban birds can exist in their polluted environments due to a variety of adaptations.
