The first part of the paper presents the main structural characteristics of laminated timber and describes some Eurocode 5 code requirements which can be more elaborate than for solid timber. The second part of the paper presents a parametric comparison of two most typical forms of double beams of variable height with levelled or saddled lower edge. The stress conditions were compared for a number of differently-shaped double-tapered and pitched cambered beams. The results obtained for a refined mesh of finite elements in the SAP2000 computer program were compared with the results obtained by simplified formulae given in Eurocode 5. It was demonstrated that, in general, a correctly modelled finite element model could account for all structural particulars of beams of variable height; while the main advantage of the finite element approach seems to be the freedom of forms, shapes, and material characteristics used in the mathematical model.
The aim of this study was to determine the influence of soil preparation on height of 3-year-old Scots pine plantation. Three methods of cutting residues management and three methods of soil preparation were analysed. Height structure was determined and mean heights in specific variants were statistically analysed. Conducted analysis showed, that the influence of soil preparation method was much greater than cutting residues management. Statistically significant impact on tree height was found in case of scarifying and mixing of topsoil with rotary tiller, where greatest mean height was observed. Ploughing furrows with LPz-75 plough proved to be the most beneficial method of soil preparation. In this case the greatest heights of 3-year-old Scots pines were measured.
One of the main dendrometric characteristics of Scots pine is the height increment. This characteristic is used to assess the condition of trees and determine radial increments in considered periods. Meteorological conditions have a large impact on the length increments, both during formation of buds and during tree growth. The duration of sunshine is one of the factors influencing the weather, thus the relationship between this factor and height increments was considered in this paper. The correlation coefficients and forward stepwise regression analysis were both used for this purpose. The significant dependences between increments in height of Scots pine and sunshine were shown. The sunshine in the vegetation season (current year) had the largest impact mainly in winter and spring months, as well as in July of the current year.
Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi Sarg.) is one of the most frequent exotic species in Polish woodlands. The basic object of research comprised 60 stands of the studied species, located mainly in the northern and western parts of Poland. The growth results for the studied species, evaluated on the basis of the average height (hg55), were compared with data describing the local climate and the stand location within the botanical and climatic zoning. The results confirm the opinion that the Japanese larch prefers a climate of maritime character and generally shows high degree of flexibility regarding its climatic requirements (very large differences between the growth conditions in the studied area and the country of origin). The dependence between the growth results and precipitation is however lower than expected. The most interesting results include the relatively clear connection between the height of the larch stands and the Degórski’s (1984) ‘floristic’ ‘K’ (continentality) index.
We studied the response in growth and phenology of naturally regenerated beech seedlings to changed ecological conditions over 14 and 19-years after cutting with different intensity. Five different types of stand densities were modelled: plot C – control plot – no cut, L – low intensity cut, M – medium intensity cut, H – high intensity cut and CC – clear cut, with 1, 8, 22, 53 and 100% of relative irradiation, and 66, 68, 78, 92 and 100% of through fall, respectively. We were focussing on tree height growth and leaf area. Our phenological observations were aimed at onset and course of two spring vegetative phenophases: bud-burst and leaf unfolding. Already in two-year-old beech seedlings we found significant differences in height growth; the differences in mean leaf area, however, were observed later. From the viewpoint of phenotypic plasticity, the height growth in beech seedlings represented more sensitive response to the environment than the leaf area. According to leaf area size and height growth in the beech seedlings on control plot, the stress conditions were indicated, primarily from the lacking light. With stand opening, the development of recruitment was getting better, and beginning with plot M the increase of seedlings height and leaf area became continuously related to the amount of radiation. The results of phenological observations showed that the spring phenophases in the seedlings start first on control plot. The start of spring phenophases on the clearcut was always observed the latest, even in comparison with the parent stand. Correlation analysis confirmed a significant correlation (P <0.05, r = -0.61) between the mean air temperature in March and April and start of the phenophase leafing in the individual years. Analysis of long-term research showed that the trend of leafing’s onset observed in course of 18 years was significant (P <0.05), manifested a shift towards earlier dates.
