Hand fruit thinning was performed for four successive years on 'Gala' apple trees grafted on dwarf P 2 rootstock and planted at a density of 3333 trees/ha. Trees were 5 years old when the experiment started. Three thinning treatments were done with the assumption that apples at harvest should be medium sized (8 fruits per kg), large (7 fruits per kg), or very large (6 fruits per kg). To obtain such results, 84; 74 or 63 fruitlets were left per tree in the beginning of June. Two other treatments included thinning fruitlets with any defects, and no thinning in the control. To avoid subsequent effects of fruit load on blooming intensity, each year new trees were chosen for the experiment. The results indicated that with tree aging fruit load must be decreased to assure the same mean fruit weight.
The thinning of flowers and fruit sets did not change the strength of tree growth in a signifi cant way. Szampion cv. trees on rootstock A 2 grew better than on M.7. The trees of Szampion RENO cv. grew signifi cantly worst. The thinning of flowers and fruit sets decreased the yield from a tree and the total yield from 1 ha of the studied biological material. Flower thinning slightly increased the mean commercial yield as compared to the control trees. Thinning of 50% of flowers at the stage of the pink bud and sets after the June fall decreased the number of fruits on the trees of Szampion cv. grafted on M.7. It was only in 2004 that the flower thinning treatment signifi cantly increased the fruit weight. Flower thinning increased the percentage of fruits with a diameter of over 7 cm in the case of Szampion cv. trees grafted on M.7. This treatment considerably (in 2006 signifi cantly) improved fruit colouring. A positive reaction to fl ower thinning was also observed in Szampion RENO trees. In the case of Szampion cv., which shows a tendency to excessive fruit setting and small fruits, it is better to apply flower thinning eliminating the excess of sets in the period of cell division in growing fruits than do it later, after the June fall. The inflorescence removal treatment requires much more time than thinning of fruit sets.
Flower or fruitlet thinning is one of the cultural practices used for improving the fruit quality and regulation of yield. The effect of ATS (FloreduX), 6-BA (MaxCel) and metamitron (Brevis) on yield and some fruit characteristics of apple trees cv. Šampion/ M.9 T337 was evaluated. Chemical thinning agents were applied alone, as subsequent spraying or as a tank mixture. Due to the possibility of damage to flowers by the announced frosts, a preparation containing sea algae – Goëmar was added in some treatments. Thinning with only MaxCel resulted in an excessive reduction of the total yield expressed in the number of fruits and their mass, but using MaxCel after flower thinning with Floredux gave very good results. The total yield expressed in kg tree-1 was even bigger than in the control, but the share of fruits with diameter above 7.5 mm was much better. The most promising method of thinning apple trees cv. ‘Szampion’ was the use of MaxCel+Brevis, at fruitlets diameter of 10-12 mm. The yield expressed by the number of apples on a tree was much smaller than in the control, but total yield did not differ from the total yield of the control trees. Apples in this treatment were characterised by the highest mass and length, as well as large diameters. In the fruits of this treatment, there was no significant reduction in flesh firmness relative to the control, and they had the highest dry matter content.
