Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) is an important animal pathogen that belongs to the Aphthovirus genus of the Picornaviridae family and infects cattle and other cloven-hoofed animals. Seven serotypes (A, O, C, Asia1, SAT1, SAT2 and SAT3) have been identified serologically, and multiple subtypes occur within each serotype. FMDV enters cells by receptor-mediated endocytosis. By electron microscopy the FMD virion appears to be a round particle with a smooth surface and a diameter of about 25 nm. The FMD viral particle contains a positive-strand RNA genome of about 8500 nucleotides, enclosed within a protein capsid. The virus capsid is made up from 60 copies each of four virus-encoded proteins VP1 to VP4. The FMDV genome is composed of the 5’ non-translated region (5’NTR), the coding region, and the 3’ non-translated region (3’NTR). The genome encodes a single polyprotein, from which the different viral polypeptides are derived by viral proteases. FMDV populations are genetically and anti-genetically heterogeneous. FMDV have very high mutation rates.
Rotavirus gastroenteritis has been recognized as the most important cause of acute diarrhea in children between 6 months and two-years-of-age in industrialized countries. Rotaviruses are classified as a genus within Reoviridae family and have a characteristic wheel-like shape. The concentric icosahedral viral capsid, 60-70 nm in diameter, is made up of two protein layers and encloses 11 segments of genomic double-stranded RNA. Each segment of RNA represents one gene that encodes a virus-specific protein. Rotaviruses also contain the spike protein VP4 and a major capsid component, VP7, both of which are responsible for their entry into a cell. Natural infection reduces the incidence and severity of subsequent episodes, rotavirus diarrhea might be controlled through vaccination. Serotype-specific immunity may play a role in protection from the disease.
Przedstawiono charakterystykę linii komórkowych wyprowadzonych z chło- niaka Burkitt'a (Raji, P3HR-1 i Namalwa) dotyczącą warunków wzrostu, obecności genomu wirusa EBV, oraz ekspresji receptorów Toll-like (TLR 2, TLR3, TLR 4).
Infectious bursal disease (IBD) is a highly infectious and contagious immunosuppressive viral disease of chickens with a worldwide economic significance to the poultry industry. Over fifty years have passed since the first confirmed occurrence of the disease, and the virus has spread all over world and evolved into multiple genetic, antigenic and pathotypic variants, becoming a serious threat to the poultry industry. The primary tool in IBD eradication is the maintenance of strict biosecurity in poultry farms and implementation of vaccination programmes which should take into account the current epidemiological knowledge about the IBDV strains circulating in the field. This review article presents the current state of knowledge about the infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) with special regard to the molecular biology of the virus, immunological aspects, as well as current and future prevention strategies.
The purpose of the article was to characterize the progress achieved in Europe during the last two decades on the control of classical swine fever (CSF) in domestic pigs and the wild boar population in Europe. RT-PCR and other findings based on molecular biology, improving laboratory diagnosis and enabling the use of DIVA strategy in vaccination, were mentioned. The classical swine fever virus (CSFV) using genome sequencing could be divided into 3 genotypes. Genotype 1 and 2 could be subdivided into 3 subgenotypes, each and genotype 3 in 4 subgenotypes. These results enabled the implementation of tracing the spread of particular strains of CSFV and the definition of the origin of the infection, what earlier was not possible. A special database of these findings is located in the E.U. and OIE Reference Laboratory for CSF in the Institute of Virology, University of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover, Germany. In the second part of the paper the current epidemiological situation concerning CSF in domestic pigs and the wild boar population is characterized. It relates to Germany and France, Slovakia and Hungary, Lithuania and Latvia, Romania, Bulgaria and the Balkan region. Besides E.U. member countries also other European countries are mentioned. It is underlined, that the wild boar population plays a crucial role as the reservoir of CSFV in Europe. In connection with this statement a working group on CSF in wild boar of the Directorate General Health and Consumer Protection (DGSANCO) of the European Commission initiated a common data base on the epidemiology of CSF in wild boar. In parallel to collecting CSFV isolates and sequences data concerning strains from domestic pigs the same information from wild boar is collected. All these data are to disposal of the national Reference Laboratories for CSF worldwide. The paper, at the end, presents recommendations concerning progress in the control and eradication of CSF, mentioning the significant role of vaccination with the use of DIVA strategy particularly for the wild boar population. Despite of the achieved progress, taking into account the present epidemiologic situation in Europe it is stated, that CSF still belongs to the most important viral diseases in pigs in Europe and also worldwide.
