The authors describe an individual of the female Ascaris suum Goeze with a unique genital system. A female with such an anomaly was found during laboratory classes of Invertebrate Zoology at the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, NCU. The specimen was about 200 mm long, and the total length of the reproductive system was 1970 mm. Further comparative analysis between unchanged and changed individuals revealed differences in the length of individual sections of the studied system, as well as in the diameter of the uterus. The described case is extremely interesting because of the phenomenon of eutely occurring in nematodes. The exact cause and mechanism of abnormalities described in Ascaris suum are not known and difficult to explain experimentally because of the extremely small number of these anomalies. Moreover, the interpretation of the anomaly is difficult because of the specific behavior and complex morphogenesis of this endoparasite.
Sebaceous glands have been extremely rare findings in the female genital system. Excluding the vulva and recent findings, very few cases have been described. The origin of the lesions remains a topic of speculation. However, it appears that prolonged irritation induces a metaplastic response in the ectocervical epithelium. A new case of sebaceous glands in the ectocervix of a 46-year-old woman is reported. The lesions were unexpectedly found in a hysterectomy specimen. The procedure was carried out for multiple leiomyomas of the uterine corpus. Histological examination revealed three mature sebaceous glands located distally to the transformation zone, which opened directly onto the surface epithelium. It could be concluded that sebaceous glands in the ectocervix are rare lesions of unclear origin and low clinical significance. However, the glands could potentially be associated with sebaceous carcinoma of that anatomical site. (Folia Morphol 2009; 68, 4: 287–289)
An updated overview of sexual dimorphism in halacarid mites is presented in this paper. Males and females of halacarid mites morphologically differ in the genital region. Additionally, sexual dimorphism can be seen in some species in dorsal plates, ventral plates, chaetotaxy of legs, idiosoma, gnathosoma, which is the theme of the present paper. A distinction of males vs. female mites is someti - mes reflected in size and fusion of various idiosomal plates and width of cuticular membranous areas. Other sexually dimorphic characters such as paragenital are - olae, postgenital papillae, lamella in legs, fossary setae on tarsus found in some species of halacarids are also discussed
The aim of the study was to estimate the prevalence and localization of different tumors in the urogenital system in dogs and cats in relation to sex, age and breed of animals. The study was performed on tumors or tissue specimens from tumors of the urinary and genital system obtained during surgery from dogs and cats submitted to the Division of Pathological Anatomy, Department of Clinical Sciences Agricultural University of Warsaw from 1998 to 2005. Most tumors of the urogenital system recognized in the present study derived from dogs (94.20%, 130 cases), and only a few cases were obtained from cats (5.79%). Occurrence and localization of urogenital system tumors in present review is similar to findings reported by other authors. Testicular tumors in males, ovarian lesions in females and urinary bladder tumors in both sexes were most commonly recognized. Older dogs were most often affected, animals with nonmalignant tumors were a bit younger than those with malignant lesions. Any obvious breed predilections were found, but terriers were at increased risk for development of transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder and mixed breed and German shepherd for development of testicular neoplasms.
In this study we examined the mechanism of action of Dieldrin on the reproductive function in adult male rats. Experimental data suggest that exposure to pesticide at 3 and 6mg/kg/day for 10 consecutive days, induced a dose-dependant decrease of the number and the mobility of epididymal spermatozoa. Testicle histological analysis shows alteration of spermatogenesis with marked reduce of gametes production combined with reduction in the seminiferous tubule diameters in treated relative to control. Concentration of plasma testosterone dropped significantly in a dose-dependent manner after exposure to Dieldrin, while circulating levels of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and weight of accessory sex glands were not affected significantly. Thus, it may be concluded that Dieldrin exposure can impair both testicle gametogenesis and steroidogenesis in adult rats.
