Background: Recent epidemiological analyses in fencing have shown that injuries and pain linked specifically to fencing training/competition were evident in 92.8% of fencers. Specifically the prevalence of Achilles tendon pathology has increased substantially in recent years, and males have been identified as being at greater risk of Achilles tendon injury compared to their female counterparts. This study aimed to examine gender differences in Achilles tendon loading during the fencing lunge. Material/Methods: Achilles tendon load was obtained from eight male and eight female club level epee fencers using a 3D motion capture system and force platform information as they completed simulated lunges. Independent t-tests were performed on the data to determine whether differences existed. Results: The results show that males were associated with significantly greater Achilles tendon loading rates in comparison to females. Conclusions: This suggests that male fencers may be at greater risk from Achilles tendon pathology as a function of fencing training/ competition.
Introduction. Nutritional habits and physical activity are fundamental for a healthy lifestyle. The aim of the paper is to present differences in the area of important pillars of health taking into account youth’s gender. Material and methods. The research was conducted on Polish high school students in Riga, Latvia. The diagnostic survey method was used with International Physical Activity Questionnaire - IPAQ’s short version and the Health Behaviour Questionnaire. Results. There are major differences in health behaviour between girls and boys, including willingness to lose and gain weight, various motives for exercising to gain or lose body weight and the fear of weight gain. The field of physical activity regarding greater activity and participation in intensive exercises was dominated by boys. Conclusions. The school process of eating habits education and physical activity should be modified.
The purpose of this study is to determine if there are differences in online shopping behaviour between women and men. While gender is an important factor that affects purchasing behaviour it is still a poorly described construct, especially in the e-commerce market. This paper focuses on examining three areas: the sources of website visits, the infrastructure used to browse Internet resources and the activity on the website in case of the gardening sector (gender neutral). The activities of 352,971 people in the period from 1st October 2016 to 1st October 2017 were analysed. The results demonstrate that online shoppers behave similarly in many areas regardless of gender.
Background: This study was carried out among undergraduate students at the University of Tuzla (Bosna and Herzegovina) with the objective of examining gender differences in the body mass index (BMI) and the level of Physical Activity (PA) among respondents. Material/Methods: This study was conducted to: determine the body mass index (BMI) and the average weekly number of hours of sport activity in the last six months (PA). A research sample was made of female students (n = 330) in the chronological age of 19.3+1.5 yrs, 60.7%, and of male students (n = 213) in the chronological age of 20.0+1.8 yrs, 39.2%. Results: On average, the students (both female and male) spend 5.60 (5.03) hours on physical activity per week. Female students spend 4.05 (4.32) hours, while male students dedicate 8.11 (5.30) hours to physical activities. It can be concluded that in principle the students practice physical activities and recreation, but still 1/5 of all students are inactive. The obtained results for the BMI show that the majority of students are in the zone of normal values: female – 278 (84.2%); male – 157 (73.7%). Correlations between BMI and PA amount to (R = .214; p < 0.01) and (R2 = .046; p < 0.01). The results of the T-test show a more significant statistical variable of differences between female and male students at the level of p < 0.05. In comparison to female students, male students have 2.35 kg/m2 higher BMI, and they are more active in physical activities for 4.06 hours in comparison to women. Conclusions: The focus should be directed to the education of young people, because they can easily adopt healthy habits that should be maintained for life. These results point out the necessity of an integrated approach to prevention and control of risk factors, particularly among youth.
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of sex on the acute effect of static-passive one-session stretching on V sit-and-reach scores in university students. A sample of 76 college students aged 19–30 years were divided into a women group (n = 36) and men group (n = 40). During one session the students performed stretching exercises for the major body muscles using the static-passive technique. Hamstring and lower back muscles extensibility was estimated by the V-sit-and-reach test at the beginning and at the end of the stretching session. The results of the two-way ANOVA with the Bonferroni adjustment showed that females and males did not show a different response to the one-session stretching intervention (p > 0.05). However, both the women and men increased statistically their scores after performing the stretching session (p < 0.001). In conclusion, no differences have been found in the trainability of flexibility by sex. However, there are differences of flexibility by the sex of students, being the females, who obtained the highest marks in the V-sit-and-reach. All this knowledge could help coaches to design more effectives stretching programs.
Background: This study was based on gender differences in male and female trained tennis players. Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to determine the extent that physical training could minimize the gender differences in lung capacities in trained tennis players aged 14–17 years. Material and methods: The participants were ten male and seven female lawn tennis players, with a mean ± standard deviation (SD) age of 15.5 ± 1.27 and 14.43 ± 1.13 years, respectively. Physical characteristics and lung volumes were measured on the same day for each participant. Data were presented as mean ± SD, and Student’s t-test to compare the measured variables was performed. Results: Differences between genders were insignificant in terms of age (years), weight (kg), body fat (%), lean body mass (kg) and chest circumference (cm). However, height (cm), and W/H ratio were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in male tennis players in comparison to female players. Insignificant differences were found for TV (L), SVC (L), FVC (L), FEV1 (L), FEV1/FVC (%), FEF25-75% (L/s), PEF (L/s) and MVV (L/min). The only significant difference (p < 0.05) in lung function measures between male and female trained tennis players was for PIF (L/s). Conclusions: Male tennis players were taller than female tennis players of same age range, which might be advantageous for males while playing. Insignificant differences between male and female players in the various lung variables measured indicated that the influence of height and gender differences could be minimized by proper training during puberty. A significantly higher PIF in male players indicated stronger and more powerful inspiratory muscle activity compared with female tennis players.
The production of thromboxane A2 (TXA2) and prostacyclin (prostaglandin I2, PGI2) is known to be increased in patients with atherosclerosis. In this study, we evaluated the influence of gender on TXA2 and PGI2 production, and their association with the progression of atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein E-null (ApoE-/-) mice maintained on a high fat diet for 3 months. En face analyses of aortas showed marked increases in plaque formation in female ApoE-/- mice. Quantification of the hematoxylin/eosin (H&E) stained cross sections of the aortic arch revealed 3 to 4-fold higher plaque thickness in female ApoE-/- mice. Analyses of 24-hours urine samples for 11-dehydro TXB2 and 2, 3-dinor-6-keto PGF1alpha indicated that female ApoE-/- mice produce up to 15-fold more TXA2 and 50% less PGI2 than the age matched males. Interestingly, the serum cholesterol levels in ApoE-/- females were 20% lower than males on the high fat regimen. No gender-associated changes in the number of T lymphocytes, mast cells and macrophages were evident in the lesion areas of ApoE-/- mice. The results suggest that the markedly elevated TXA2 production and reduced PGI2 production are gender-related proatherogenic risk factors in female ApoE-/- mice.
