The development of green areas in Cracow has been closely associated with changes in town’s defence systems. At the beginning of the 19th century, a ring of gardens (the Planty) replaced the defensive walls of the town. In this century, a second perimeter of green areas emerged, this time replacing old Austrian-built fortification system. This process has continued, with many problems, throughout the communist rule.
