Nanotechnology is expected to be a critical driver of global economic growth and development in this century. Using nanotechnology for production of nanomaterials with unique properties is expected to revolutionize technology and industry. The forest and wood products industry relies on a vast renewable resource base to manufacture a wide range of products that are indispensable in our modern society. By employing nanotechnology to revitalize the forest products industry, we can strengthen one of Polish core manufacturing sector. Poland has a great infrastructure for growing, harvesting and processing wood products, which provides a key employment base in almost every aspect. This infrastructure provides a fundamental strategic advantage that can be used for preserving the global economic competitiveness of this industry. Nanotechnology holds the promise of changing virtually all of the processes by which wood and paper products are now made, transforming the sector from a resource-based to a knowledge-based industry with much greater prospects for long-term stability.
This paper deals with the wood pellets market in the Slovak Republic and in the EU. Wood pellets are one of several processed biomass feedstocks that are traded internationally and used for energy. They are cleaner burning, have a higher energy density, and are easier to handle than firewood, chips, or other forms of wood fuel. In the growing market for renewable fuels, wood pellets are used as a supplement or substitute for coal in energy systems and as a thermal fuel source for commercial and residential heating. Advantages of wood pellets include (1) the main feedstock, which is wood waste from primary and secondary saw mills, and (2) the high energy density and consistency of the fuel, which allows international trade to be feasible. The aim is to analyse the current Slovak and European wood pellet markets including demand, supply and prices of pellets used for heating and power production. The focus of this market analysis is on the European market for pellet production and use, although the European trade of pellets does also include trade flows from non-European countries. The European Union is still the main market for wood pellets and will remain as such for the coming years.
Skidding logs from stump to landing areas is one of the most important procedures in ground-based logging operations. Rubber-tired skidders often increase soil compaction, which leads to an increase in soil strength (penetrometer resistance) and bulk density (dry soil weight per volume). Woody slash materials (tree limbs and tops) are generally distributed over the skid trails to reduce soil compaction due to machine traffic. In this study, soil compaction was estimated by measuring the values of soil strength and bulk density resulting from a rubber-tired skidder. The effects of not only woody slash materials but also various other slash treatments (chip and sawdust) in reducing soil compaction were investigated by considering the various numbers of vehicle trips (1, 5, and 10 trips) and two soil depth classes (10 and 20 cm depths). The results indicated that soil compaction indicators, soil strength and bulk density, markedly increased as the number of machine trips increased. Woody slash materials distributed over the skid trail provided better soil support capacity than that of other slash treatments. It was also found that there was a significant correlation between soil strength and bulk density with respect to the number of machine trips and slash treatments.
