Observations carried out in south-western Poland revealed that Prunus serotina (Ehrh), invasive plant species new to Poland, became a suitable food source for 10 polyphagous lepidopteran species, including one protected species: scarce swallowtail, Iphiclides podalirius L.
Studies on diet of vendace from the Maróz Lake were carried out to determine sea- sonal changes in food composition in relation to changes of zooplankton food resources in the environment. Fish samples, were collected once a month from April to November in the years 1994–1996. A total of 409 alimentary tracts were analyzed. Simultane- ously, crustacean zooplankton samples were collected to assess food abundance. The occurrence of Cladocera and Copepoda in zooplankton samples from the Maróz Lake. Food composition in the gut of vendace did not correspond with zooplankton abun- dance in the water. Due to considerable oxygen de fi ciency in the Maróz Lake (recorded in water layer 4 m below the surface), especially in June, it may be presumed that sublit- toral or even littoral was the bottom zone accessible for vendace, what, in turn, seems to be indicated by the presence of detritus, algae and macrophytes debris in food of the considered fish species.
The main goal of this study was to determine the reason for the significant increase of the tawny owl Strix aluco population in Kozłówka Forest near Lubartów (51°30' N, 22°35' E) in eastern Poland. Since 1990, this forest complex has been part of Kozłowiecki Landscape Park. Our research was conducted using standard playback method on a sample plot covering 50 km2. Each year in March and April 1990-91 and 2007-09, three counts with vocal stimulation were performed on the study plot. Between 1991 and 2009, a significant increase in the density of the tawny owl population was observed from 2.4 pairs/10 km2 to 4.6 pairs/10 km2. We discuss how habitat quality, food availability, and weather conditions can explain this phenomenon.
In highly seasonal temperate zones climate may cause fluctuations in the accessibility of prey for insectivorous bats. The main objective of this project was to evaluate if these fluctuations can result in resource bottlenecks that affect the body condition of a temperate zone bat — Myotis myotis. Seasonal changes in body condition followed different patterns in Portugal and Germany, which have different climates. In Germany bats use thermally better hibernacula, which allow them to minimize energy expenditure, but because of the longer winters they emerge from hibernation in poorer condition. Except during the hibernation period, food was always abundant in Germany, but the condition of the animals was poor when bad weather constrained foraging, particularly in early spring. In Portugal food was limiting during the long dry summer, and this affected the condition of the animals for several months. The conclusion that food resources can act as a limiting factor is relevant for conservation because, like other bat species, M. myotis forages mostly in agricultural and forestry habitats, and can be affected by practices that accentuate resource bottlenecks. Where necessary, the management of agroecosystems near colonies of M. myotis and of other threatened bats should aim at minimizing seasonal food bottlenecks.
Variation in life history strategies of rudd Scardinius erythrophthalmus (L.) in Europe was evaluated based on published sources. The growth and lifespan were analysed as the main variables in life strategies of any fish. The results revealed that total length (TL) at age 1 year was correlated with latitude and faster growth during the first growing season leads to a shorter lifespan in Europe. Variation in length at age 1 year was more pronounced in southern (40–46°N: mean TL = 84.6 mm, SD = 27.2, n = 9) than in northern populations (49–61°N: mean TL = 46.4 mm, SD = 4.2, n = 10). Thus, rudd can show different life history strategies in southern populations whereas in northern populations these options are few.
Farmland bird populations declining rapidly all over Europe. Most of the knowledge is, however, from the breeding season, and much less is known about the winter period, especially from Central and Eastern Europe. We censused wintering farmland bird assemblages in West Hungary, in 2011/2012. The censuses covered semi-natural and seeded grasslands, plough fields and wheat fields. The available winter seed food was estimated for each field from the top soil and from the vegetation. We recorded 25 species with 844 individuals on the fields. Semi-natural grasslands were the most important habitats for species richness of all, granivorous, and resident species, with seeded grasslands as the second best habitat. Abundance showed similar pattern, although with no significant effect for granivorous species and for short-range migrants. Seed mass was significantly different among the habitat types, higher on seeded grasslands and seminatural grasslands than on ploughed sites and winter wheat fields. Date had a significant effect on species richness and abundance with highest values in December. There was a positive significant correlation between bird species richness and seed mass only in December. Our results strengthen former findings that changes and drivers of wintering farmland bird populations may differ between Central and West Europe, and highlight the need for further, large scale studies to provide evidence base to guide agrienvironmental programs.
The distribution and abundance of food resources is a major factor influencing animal populations. I studied the effect of a roe and red deer population decline on diet composition, home range size and foraging pattern in the Eurasian lynxLynx lynx (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Białowieża Primeval Forest (BPF), eastern Poland. The population of cervids in BPF experienced a nearly two-fold reduction in size from 1991 through 2006 due to severe hunting pressure between 1991 and 1996. Comparison of published data on lynx diet during the high abundance of ungulates with new data obtained for the low abundance period showed that despite a significant decline in their availability, cervids (roe and red deer) continued to form the majority of the diet of lynx, with roe deer being most preferred in both periods. Home range sizes of lynx showed a tendency to increase with declining prey densities, as indicated by relative percentage increases in average yearly home range sizes amongst different sex/age groups. In response to lower availability of their main prey, lynx increased their daily straight-line movement distances by 44% and doubled the ranges covered in 5-day periods. This illustrated that, with declining prey abundance, the lynx increased their hunting efforts by either spending more time actively searching for prey or continuing foraging even after a successful hunt. Spatial analysis of the distribution of ungulates and lynx indicated that deer were evenly distributed throughout lynx ranges in BPF and spatial proximity of the predator to prey sites did not play an important role in the efficiency of hunting. Lynx may adapt to changing prey availability by increasing search effort, but this was not sufficient to prevent the negative influences of the prey decline on the lynx population. Prey depletion has an immediate effect on lynx spatial organization and, in consequence, on their density. This information has to be considered in prioritizing lynx conservation measures and management of ungulates.
