Micronutrient deficiencies have increased over recent decades due to the general depreciation of the quality of poor people’s diet, both in developed and developing countries. The deficiencies of iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) are a critical public health problem worldwide, with the negative impact on health, lifespan and productivity. Biofortification is an agricultural approach that can improve human nutrition on a global scale. Agronomic biofortification is considered a short-term and complementary strategy, but economic analyses suggest that genetic biofortification is the most effective strategy for increasing dietary Fe and Zn intakes of vulnerable populations. Enrichment of cereal grains by breeding is a high-priority area of research, and an effective strategy among other approaches, e.g, fortification, supplementation and food diversification. This review discusses the role of Fe and Zn in plant nutrition, the potential strategies for developing Fe and Zn biofortified crops and their importance in human nutrition.
Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is an important food crop in many tropical countries in Africa, South America and Asia. However, in Thailand, this crop has been well recognized as more than a subsistence crop. It is important commercially as the raw material for a large and complex industrial system that has a significant impact to the country's economics. The roots of this crop contain high a starch content and approximately half of the total roots produced (20 million tons) are used for the starch industry. Cassava starch has many remarkable characteristics including high paste viscosity, high paste clarity and high freeze-thaw stability, which are advantageous to many industries. In particular, the native starch with high purity can be readily modified by physical, chemical and enzyme process to many diversified products to improve the starch functionality and, consequently, encourage more industrial application. This paper aims to describe the unique modification of cassava starch produced at the industrial level in Thailand with respect to technological aspect and product quality.
A survey was conducted to determine the types, frequency and population of plant parasitic nematodes associated with the soils and roots of Yam (Dioscorea species) in all the Local Government Areas of Ogun and Osun States of Nigeria using random sampling soil and root and pie pan modification of Baerman funnel for plant parasitic nematode extraction. Ten and nine genera of plant parasitic nematodes were encountered both from the soils and root samples from the two States. Plant parasitic nematodes recovered included Scutellonema spp., Meloidogyne spp., Pratylenchus spp., Trichodorus spp., Helicotylenchus spp., Radopholus spp., Longidorus spp., Xiphinema spp., Rotylenchulus spp and Aphelenchoides species. Scutellonema spp., Meloidogyne spp., and Pratylenchus spp were most widely distributed with frequency ratings of 70, 65 and 60% respectively in soil samples from Ogun State and in the root samples the three genera predominated with 60, 55 and 45% frequency ratings respectively. Meloidogyne spp., Scutellonema spp., and Pratylenchus spp were most widely distributed with frequency ratings of 65, 45 and 35% respectively in soil samples from Osun State and in the root samples the three genera predominated with 55, 35 and 35% frequency ratings respectively.
