Due to strong eggplant growth and the formation of large vegetative weight quantities in growing under glass and foil it was deemed useful to conduct studies on the effect of pruning intensity on yielding of this vegetable in rooms. The aim of the foregoing studies was to demonstrate the effect of plant pruning and topping manner on yield quantity and earliness. The experiment was conducted in the years 2001–2003. The study objects were the plants of ‘Epic F1’ cultivar. Eggplant was grown in rigid foil cylinders of the capacity of 10 dm3 in the peat substrates. The plants were trimmed, managing for one, two, three, four, five, six guiding shoots and in the natural form, without trimming. Topping cut was performed in each combination after the first fruit harvest. The experiment was established and conducted as a two-factor one, in accordance with a complete randomization system: A – pruning method (a = 7), B – topped and non-topped plants (b = 2). Each combination of the examined factors was represented by 20 plants (experimental units). A significant effect of pruning intensity on the quantity and earliness yielding was demonstrated. The highest marketable fruit yield was obtained from plants managed for two (3.82 kg.m-2), three (3.98 kg.m-2), and four (3.87 kg.m-2) guiding shoots. Managing for one guiding shoot significantly decreased the total and marketable fruit number. The highest early yield was collected from plants managed for one and two guiding shoots. A single topping cut performed after the first fruit harvest did not affect marketable yield and marketable fruit number.
The main factors determining the quantity and quality of the yield of plants grown in the soilless system is the kind of cultivation substrate used and the level of supplying the plants with nutrients. Studies conducted in the years 2005–2006 were aimed at determining the effect of substrates (peat, peat mixed with pine bark in the proportion of 1:1, peat with pine sawdust in the ratio of 1:1), as well as of differentiated nitrogen dose (140 and 210 mg N·dm-3) upon yielding, chemical composition of strawberry (Fragaria × ananasa Duch.) leaves and fruit, cultivar „Elsanta”, grown in unheated foil tunnel. In those studies no significant differences were found in total and marketable yield of strawberry fruit grown in peat, as well as in peat with pine bark. Significantly smaller total (435.8 g·plant-1) and marketable (286.5 g·plant-1) fruit yield was reported when strawberries were grown in peat mixed with pine sawdust. In plants grown in peat mixed with sawdust significantly smaller fruit unit weight (10.7 g) was found, as compared to plants that grew in the remaining substratums. In our studies no significant effect of differentiated nitrogen fertilization upon strawberry yielding was demonstrated. In the leaves of strawberries fertilized with nitrogen in the dose of 210 mg N·dm-3 we found significantly more nitrogen and phosphorus, as well as less calcium and magnesium, as compared to plants fertilized with smaller doses of this nutrient. The fruit of strawberries fertilized with a higher nitrogen dose contained significantly more nitrogen and potassium, as well as less vitamin C and soluble solids, as compared to the fruit collected from plants fertilized with nitrogen in the dose of 140 mg N·dm-3.
Disappearance of iprodione deposits on peppers, eggplants and tomatoes grown in commercial greenhouses and in a foil tunnel were studied. lt was found that iprodione residues on ripening fruits decreased according to simple regression lines. Their initial values dropped by half and reached zero levels within 2.5-2.8 and about 5 weeks after Rovral FLO 255 SC application, respectively. lprodione deposits on pepper leaves dropped within four weeks only by 30% white on eggplant leaves in practice stayed at the same level. The chemical may be suitable for the comparative study of real disappearance of pesticides after their applications for the control of pests and diseases.
In horticultural production substrates have been sought that would ensure the optimum physical conditions (including aerobic and aquatic) in the root environment. The soil substrate can be modified with synthetic supplements called hydrogels or sorbents. When introduced to the soil, they improve the growth and development of plants, and by interacting with the climatic and soil conditions, they can improve the chemical composition of the vegetables. Research conducted in 2000–2001 aimed at the evaluation of the effect of different type sorbents introduced into the soil and the cultivation date on the concentration of some components in the Charlene lettuce cultivated in a film tunnel. Lettuce was grown in the presence of the following sorbents: potassium Ecosorb, sodium Acrygel, potassium Acrygel and sodium-potassium Acrygel during two terms: spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October). Based on the results of the two-year experiment, a significant effect of both experimental factors on the concentration of some components in the leaves of Charlene lettuce was observed. The concentration of L-ascorbic acid was determined by the type of sorbent used. In the first year of the experiment, the sodium-potassium Acrygel (14.2 mg%) was used to enhance the accumulation of vitamin C. In the second year, the sodium Acrygel (12.5 mg%) enhanced the accumulation of vitamin C. The spring plants accumulated higher levels of total sugars (in 2000 – 1.51% more, in 2001 0.68% more) in comparison to the autumn plants. The lettuce grown in the autumn had high concentrations of nitrates, averaging 2944.3 mg N-NO₃ ·kg fresh mass⁻¹.
