In July, 1992, fire swept through the Jelonka Reserve (52o35'33"N; 23o22'10"E). Litter, herbs layer and juniper shrubs were razed and the tree trunks of Pinus sylvestris and Populus tremula damaged, which resulted in their death the following year. Five research plots of 25 m2 each were established in the post-fire area. The species present there and their degrees of coverage were listed on the Londo scale between 1993 and 2002. The calculation of average degrees of coverage for individual populations allowed for the establishing of a chronological pattern of post-fire succession. The following findings have been made: 1) the primary function in colonization belongs to species of guerilla strategy of growth whose dormant buds survived fire underground (Holcus mollis, Calluna vulgaris and Populus tremula) or phalanx strategy of growth (Corynephoms canescens); 2) the dominants of the initial succession stage are perennial grasses, not therophytes; 3) the spatial pattern of succession is influenced by the occurrence of H. mollis or C. canescens in a particular location; 4) the initial stage terminates with the occurrence and further growth of C. vulgaris clumps; the post-fire succession in the Jelonka Reserve attained a brushwood stage faster in comparison to secondary succession, formerly triggered by the cessation of cultivation on arable land.
Common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca L.) has become an invasive weed in Central and Eastern Europe, where human-induced fires have also taken part in forming the landscape. There is growing evidence that plant-derived smoke enhances seed germination, especially for species from fire-prone ecosystems, via the mechanisms of dormancy-breaking, germination stimulation or both. Hence, we hypothesized that smoke promotes seed germination for common milkweed by either or both mechanisms. To test this, germination responses of A. syriaca to the application of aqueous smoke solution (smoke-water) were studied in laboratory. Seeds were either cold stratified ( 7°C, 16 days) in tap water (TW), smoke-water (SW) or were not stratified at all, and then were germinated with SW or with TW (encompassing 5 treatments: 0—TW, 0—SW, TW—TW, TW—SW and SW—TW, where the first abbreviation indicates stratification, the second germination condition). In line with our hypothesis, the low (5%) germination of seeds was enhanced by cold stratification with SW at a greater extent (increasing to 52%) than by cold stratification with TW (25%), indicating that SW contributed to dormancy-breaking of seeds for A. syriaca. In contrast, SW did not stimulate germination when it was applied during the germination phase. To our best knowledge, this is the first study demonstrating smokeenhanced germination for common milkweed, which mechanism may help this species to successfully colonize new habitats after fire. As fire frequency is expected to increase in Europe with recent climate change, these results might contribute to a more efficient control of A. syriaca in areas threatened by its invasion.
Natural forest fires are considered as a part of natural ecosystem processes. Short-term effects of prescribed fire on densities and taxonomic diversity of soil Acari were studied in fresh pine mixed forest (“Biala” forest ) in the Mazovia region, Central-Eastern Poland. Three plots (size 1 m²) of similar soil type and vegetation were selected for prescribed burning. Soil samples of an area of 10 cm² and the depth of 5 cm were collected in June 2005 – one day after the burning, 60 days after the burning and 90 days after the burning. Samples were collected from within the border of the burned plots, from the border itself, as well as from the surroundings. Due to the burning, the density of Acari communities decreased from 11.5 × 10³ ind. m⁻² recorded in the surroundings to 3.2 × 10³ ind. m⁻² recorded in the burned plots. Values recorded within the burned plots after the fire differed significantly from those recorded on the border (P = 0.05) and in the surroundings (P = 0.0001). After 60 days, an increase in Acari abundance was observed in the burned plots (P = 0.02), becoming similar to that noted for the border of the plot and for the surroundings. After 90 days, there were no significant differences between the burned parts of the plots, their borders and the surroundings; however, generally decreased densities were observed, possibly due to the seasonal reason. The observed changes suggest the restoration of Acari community after disturbance.
Frequent wild fires in mountainous grasslands of Alborz (Iran) influenced the sustainability of habitats and ecological niches of species in this ecosystem. In fact, fire has been a constant event in Golestan National Park in Alborz for a long time (67 fires during 1957 to 1997). Due to importance of this national park in northeastern Iran as a biosphere reserve, the research has been carried out in order to investigate the causes of the fires and the subsequent changes occurred in vegetation and habitat structure. Study was performed in two adjacent: burned and unburned areas in mountains of Alborz. The analysis showed that the vegetation coverage and the above ground biomass in the burned area were significantly greater in comparison to the control area. Whereas, the diversity of vegetation of the two areas did not show significant differences. It was also shown that the coverage of grass species like Stipa pennata L., Festuca valessiana, Avena wiestii Steud. and Aegilops tauschii Coss. increased with respect to the non-burned area. The coverage of woody species like Acanthophyllum pugens, Onobrychis cornuta (L.) Desv., Cotoneaster ovatus Pojark. and Rosa persica Michx. considerably decreased in burned area. Due to increase of annual species of grasses and decrease of woody species, it can be concluded that fire is a preventive factor in succession of ecosystem toward climax and the dominance of grasses can be regarded as a suitable condition for further fire occurrence.
