The aim of this paper has been to examine experimentally the importance of the density of larvae and of the addition of the food for Chironomus and Tubificidae using selected parameters and indices of their populations. Increase of the density of Chironomus plumo- sus larvae (0.5–50.0 thousands ind. m⁻²) in laboratory experiments resulted in the decrease of emergence of imagos, number of tube apertures (3.5–0.4 apertures ind.⁻¹), and in the lower rate of tubes building. The addition of the food (powdered dry daphnids or food tablets for aquarial fish) had only slight effect on tube numbers but it decreased clearly the getting out of larvae from tubes (probably due to improved feeding conditions inside tubes). It had also a slight negative effect on the survival of larvae. Numbers and individual growth of Tubificidae were positively dependent on the addition of the food (also in the form of naturally dead Chironomus larvae) and negatively – on the density of Chironomus.
This paper describes the feeding behaviour ofRousettus leschenaulti Desmarest, 1820 on lychees, the preferred cultivated food of this bat in captive conditions. We found that feeding comprised 25–30% of the total activity of these animals in a flight cage and that feeding durations were not significantly different between two sexes. To evaluate the role of odor and vision in foraging behaviour, we provided animals with artificial lychees, real lychees and artificial lychees soaked in the juice of real lychees and we recorded the number of feeding approaches to the different “fruit” types. The results indicated that bats approached real fruit significantly more than artificial fruit, and that the number of approaches to the soaked artificial fruit was also significantly higher than to the unsoaked artificial fruit. There were no significant differences between sexes in approach rates to any “fruit” type. We discuss the role of different sensory cues in the foraging behaviour of these bats and emphasize that the olfactory cue is important in detecting food resources and discriminating between different kinds of food items.
Surface waxes from wax-covered triticale plants (RAH 122) were sprayed on plants of the waxless genotype RAH 366 or the surface waxes were used to make artificial diet preparations. The results were significant increases in the mortality of apterous adults of the grain aphid Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) at all concentrations tested in comparison with those aphids which fed on the control plants or aphids which were reared on the diets. In the choice tests, most aphids settled on plants without surface waxes or on diet preparations which did not have surface waxes (the controls). When the concentration of the surface waxes was increased on one of the plants or surface waxes were increased in the diet preparation, the number of wandering aphids increased. Those aphids which did not wander were mainly on the waxless control plants or on the waxless diet preparations. Aphids did settle on those plants or on the diet preparations which had 100 and 1,000 μg · g–1 of surface wax. The aphids rarely settled on the diet preparations containing 10,000 μg ∙ g–1 of surface waxes. From these observations it appears that surface waxes can act as a feeding deterrent. Since aphids on plants with surface waxes, or aphids which settled on diet preparations with surface waxes, started to die earlier than aphids fed only the control plants or the control diet preparations, it is possible that the surface waxes had a toxic effect that led to early mortality. Thus, it can be said that the surface waxes caused feeding deterrence and had a toxic effect on the aphids.
The white stork Ciconia ciconia is a typical open-area species, foraging mainly in farmland and wetland areas. The main aim of this paper was to describe the foraging ecology of white storks inside un-typical habitat, i.e. forests in Poland. Data on white stork feeding in forests were based on responses to questionnaires distributed to several national mailing lists with a total of 1700 (16% subscribers) and via emails to naturalists (mainly to white stork researchers). In total 63 observations, from the years 2000–2015, were collected, mainly from eastern Poland. In all cases, only a single adult individual was recorded inside the forest, with a mean (±SD) distance to the forest edge of 50 ± 102 m (n = 597) and 1315 ± 1015 m (n = 63) to the nearest white stork nest. Birds foraging inside forests were recorded from late May to mid-August, but the greatest numbers were seen during June. The main prey was a lizard, the slow-worm Anguis fragilis, with a maximum of 10 individuals collected by a stork during one foraging session. We discuss the origin of the observed foraging behaviour, noting that the species is flexible and opportunistic in terms of consumed food. The observed foraging is probably similar to the original behaviour of the species within primeval forest, although food opportunism helps the white stork to use new foraging areas, for example landfills.
Foraging strategies have traditionally been modelled as a result of food selection in response to one factor, as for instance resource availability, deterrent compounds or nutrients. Thus, a trade-off is assumed between plasticity (generalist strategy) and efficiency (specialist strategy). Nevertheless, several studies have demonstrated that animals cope behaviourally with food supply variation. For instance, desert-dwelling rodents partially compensate for nutritional bottlenecks through diet selection. The aim of our study was to test how foraging behaviour matches spatial and temporal variations in the trophic environment and how modelling hypotheses help us to understand the resultant foraging strategy. Our animal study model was the small cavy Microcavia australis, a widely distributed herbivorous rodent. Fieldwork was carried out in four places, in wet and dry seasons. We found significant differences in plant cover, plant diversity and niche breadth, and diet selection revealed a complex foraging strategy. M. australis shows a behavioural repertoire that exceeds single-criterion categories; therefore, we appeal to theoretical models that consider ecological and physiological perspectives. We classified the small cavy as a facultative specialist displaying a thoroughly opportunistic strategy based on the plasticity of the behavioural phenotype. We finally discuss the evolutionary relevance of our results and propose further investigation avenues.
An attempt was made to optimize the minimum required inoculation load of the weevils on three growth stages of waterhyacinth, based on reduction of fresh biomass, number of leaves and ramifications. The small growth stage was controlled earlier than the waterhyacinth of middle growth stage, corresponding to the increase in number of weevils per plant. The large plants could not be controlled even with the inoculation pressure of 20 weevils per plant because of high growth rate. This study suggests that Neochetina spp. has the potential to keep the population of the macrophyte at a subeconomic density, through a basic inoculation load of weevils in due course of time.
We examined the raccoon dog’s Nyctereutes procyonoides (Gray, 1834) diet in two agricultural landscapes of Germany and compared these results with other diet studies from its native and introduced ranges. The diet composition was influenced as well by the landscape structures as by the seasons: in the waterrich study area 2 amphibians (54.1%) and fish (10.8%) occurred more frequently in the samples. In study area 1 amphibians (19.0%) and invertebrates (69.4%) gained more significance in the diet in summer, whereas in winter samples maize (32.8%) was an important food item. The diet composition shifted according to the availability of different food items. Raccoon dogs, ability to feed temporarily on one food source may possibly cause a serious problem to endangered small populations of birds and amphibians. The review of 81 data sets from nine countries showed that seasons and locality affected the occurrence of most food items. However, comparable to the present study, small mammals, insects and plants were identified as important food items both in native and introduced ranges of the raccoon dog. In regard to its diet composition, gathering foraging strategy and inactivity during winter, the raccoon dog probably preys less often on game animals and birds than the native red fox Vulpes vulpes.
Instances of dwarfism in the fossil record are of interest to palaeontologists because they often provide insight into aspects of palaeoecology. Fossil species of Australian-Pacific mekosuchine genus Mekosuchus have been described as dwarf, primarily terrestrial crocodiles, in contrast with the nearly ubiquitous semi-aquatic habitus of extant crocodilians (Willis 1997). This hypothesis has been difficult to test because of limited knowledge of the cranial and postcranial skeleton of extinct taxa and the continuous nature of crocodilian growth. New crocodilian vertebral material from Riversleigh, northwestern Queensland, tentatively referred to Mekosuchus whitehunterensis, displays morphological maturity indicative of adult snout-vent length little over a half-meter, proportionally smaller than extant dwarf taxa. Further, this material displays morphology that indicates a relatively large epaxial neck musculature for its body-size. These attributes suggest this dwarf mekosuchine employed unusual feeding behaviours. The ability to perform normal death-roll, de-fleshing behaviours would be limited in a mekosuchine of such small size. Given the powerful neck muscles and other anatomical features, it is more likely that this mekosuchine killed and/or dismembered its prey using a relatively forceful lifting and shaking of the head.

Magnetically induced vagus nerve stimulation and feeding behavior in rats

Vagus nerve (VN) contribute to the bidirectional communication between the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system. Stimulation of the VN by a magnetically-driven solenoid with parameters similar to those during food-induced stomach distension has been thought to mimic short-term signaling of satiety and suppress food intake. In this study, the determination of optimal parameters of vagal neuro-modulation to achieve decreased food intake with a resulting reduction in body mass of rats is explored as therapy to treat obesity. The experimental design consisted of three groups of obese adult male Wistar rats: Group 1: VEMF - with solenoid's electrodes placed on the left VN in the magnetic field exposure (MFE); Group 2: EMF - without solenoid's electrodes on the VN in MFE; Group 3: CON - without solenoid's electrodes on the VN outside the MFE. This study suggests that the rats with solenoid's electrodes placed on the left VN significantly decreased their food intake, weight gain and serum leptin concentrations when compared to that of the CON group. PP levels were found to be higher in the VEMF group when compared to the controls groups. It was found that the most effective parameters of vagal stimulation on eating behavior were 3631, 7861, 14523 A2 x h/m2. The magnetic field by unknown mechanisms also influences feeding behavior. This study suggests that vago-vagal reflexes are involved in the feeding homeostasis and that neuromodulation might be an effective method for managing obesity. Further studies are required to confirm these effects in humans.
